CHAPTER 20

LUCA

The door to my office clicked open at precisely eight o’clock. I didn’t look up. Damon was always punctual, Matteo not so much, but I wasn’t expecting either of them.

Then I heard the click of designer shoes—confident, unhurried. Not Damon.

I raised my eyes, ready to issue a death glare.

And froze.

Adrien.

Slim black suit. Hair pulled into a precise, sleek bun. Not one strand out of place. He was the picture of control—buttoned at the wrist, gold watch peeking from his cuff, lips glossy, and a smirk that was nothing short of infuriating.

"Good morning," he said breezily, dropping a folder onto my desk like he owned the place. "Your first meeting starts in twenty. You’ve got back-to-backs till noon, lunch with the city commissioner—which, by the way, I rescheduled to his office so you don’t have to move—and then your vetting reports at three. I’ve color-coded your priorities and added tags to the files."

I blinked. “What the fuck?”

Adrien smiled like I’d just complimen

CHAPTER 73ADRIEN“No… stop, please, I didn’t mean to— I— I’m sorry—”I jerked awake, breath slamming out of my lungs. My shirt clung to my skin, drenched. The sheets were a twisted mess. My fingers were trembling. I couldn’t tell where I was for a second.Just a dream.No. Not a dream. A memory. The fists. The cold. The muffled laughter. Blood in my mouth and no one coming to help.I pushed the heels of my palms into my eyes and forced myself to sit up. My chest ached like it had been caved in. The air was heavy. I couldn’t stay here.I swung my legs over the bed and stood. The hallway was dark. Empty. Quiet.I walked.I didn’t even think about it—my body just moved. Barefoot. The stone tiles were cold under my feet, grounding me in a way nothing else could. My mind was quiet but not peaceful. It was the kind of quiet that came after too much screaming. Like the silence after a bomb.I wandered.Like a ghost.Eventually, my steps slowed near his hallway. Luca’s.I didn’t know why I s

CHAPTER 72LUCAI barely got back inside when I heard her.Alexis.Sobbing.Choking out words that didn’t make sense. That fake, breathless panic she always pulled when she wanted something.I was about to ignore it—until I saw Adrien.Walking back in. Face tight. Shoulders clenched. Something was wrong.I didn’t wait.I grabbed his arm, spun him toward me. “What the hell is this?” I barked. He blinked, confused. “What?”From behind me, Alexis wailed, “He screamed at me, Luca! He cornered me near the garden wall—he said—he said—” Her voice broke into hiccups. “I was scared he’d hit me. I—I didn’t do anything—”“Are you kidding me right now?” Adrien snapped, stepping forward.I shoved him back against the wall. “Don’t move.”“Luca, she’s lying,” he said firmly, eyes locked on mine. “She’s been acting weird since training started. She saw me outside, walked up to me crying, saying I beat her—what the hell—?”Alexis cut in, shaking, still sobbing. “I knew he didn’t like me, but I didn’t

CHAPTER 71ADRIENThe house was too quiet when we got back. Not even the usual hum of soft footsteps or murmurs in the hall. Damon and Matteo tried talking to me in the car—light teasing, a few questions—but I gave nothing. I didn’t have anything left to give. Not after tonight.I stepped out first, not waiting. Luca was standing at the entrance, arms crossed, face unreadable.“Report,” he said.Damon stepped forward. “Done. All of them.”“Clean,” Matteo added. “No survivors.”Luca didn’t look at them. He was watching me. Just watching.I walked past him like he wasn’t there.“Adrien,” Matteo called after a moment.I stopped, still facing forward. He jogged up and stood beside me. “Come with me.”I didn’t ask where. I followed. I didn’t want to go back to the other room. The walls there echoed too loudly, and the silence screamed. We got to my old room—my real one, not that cage.Matteo opened the door and held it. “Go on.”I stared. “This...?”He nodded. “Yeah.”I stepped inside, slo

CHAPTER 70ADRIENI stood there after Luca walked off. My chest was tight. My fists clenched. Why the hell did I even feel proud? Why did that cold, dismissive “do what you want” sound like approval to me?I hated myself for it."You're coming with us," Matteo said gently, walking beside me. "Be ready in twenty. Tactical gear. No shiny shit.""I know," I muttered. He looked at me. “You okay?”I didn’t answer.Because no, I wasn’t okay. I’d just let Luca use me again. Like a toy he could pick up and break apart whenever the mood struck. And worse? I’d let him. Again. I kissed him back. I clawed at him. I begged for more like a fucking addict. And now I was here. Still trying to earn his respect. Still trying to prove something.“Adrien,” Matteo said, stopping. “Don’t go into this with your head messed up. Focus.”“I am focused.”“You sure?” he asked, raising a brow. “You’re not going for Luca. You’re going for you.”I swallowed. “I know why I’m going.”“Good.” He nodded. “Get changed.

CHAPTER 69LUCAI had just stepped out of the gym. My muscles were still tense, skin still burning from what had happened inside. Adrien. On the floor. His mouth on mine. I didn’t know if it was rage or heat running through my veins. Probably both. Then Matteo came running down the hall.“Boss!” His voice was urgent, breath uneven. He was gripping his phone like it was about to explode. “It’s confirmed. The Laurents are moving girls through Southern Spain. Young. Teenage. Maybe younger.”I stopped walking. My head turned slowly toward him.“When?” My voice came out colder than ice.“Three days from now. Seville. Through a textile front. I’ve got partial names, a route, some locations. They’re heavily guarded.”My jaw flexed. “Fuck.”We’d been waiting for a big move, but this… this was worse.Matteo’s eyes hardened. “It’s more than big. They’re using children, Luca.”The hallway went quiet.Behind me, a door creaked open.I didn’t have to look. I knew who it was.Adrien stepped into vi

CHAPTER 68LUCAThe gym was quiet.I stepped in, the floor echoing under my boots. The sound of fists hitting the bag came sharp and steady. Adrien. Alone. Shirtless. His skin glistened with sweat, muscles tight with tension. His knuckles were red, raw, and he didn’t flinch. He didn’t even look at me.“Still pretending to be a soldier?” I asked, voice low.He didn’t stop punching. Not even for a second. “Still pretending to be human?”I walked forward, slow. Controlled. “Big words for someone I found sobbing in a shower.”He turned. Eyes sharp. “Big talk from someone who needs cameras to feel close to someone.”I smiled, but it wasn’t real. “Careful.”“Why?” he snapped, stepping forward. “You’ll call me names again? Hurt me just enough to feel something?”“Don’t flatter yourself. I’ve hurt better.”He struck first. Fast. A punch to the chest. I caught it. Slammed him against the wall.“You wanna go again?” I growled.“Hit me, Luca.”I did.His head snapped to the side, but he didn’t f
