I was leaving the Pit just as I came—like a shattered glass put back together and at the same time trying to hold water.

I wanted to escape the life I had with Damian. And now I was escaping again, only this time around, I was running from a life I could have had with a liar.

When I reached the last stairs, there were no customers. Just Mara and some of the men in the room.

I hated the way Mara looked at me.

It made me want to change my mind about leaving, for her sake at least.

She took me

I had barely stepped away from the building when I started regretting not asking Mara to come with me.The afternoon had already begun fading into evening, leaving Greystone wrapped in that strange gray light that made everything look quieter than it actually was. I stood near the roadside, looking for a cab that could take me back to The Pit, while keeping my eyes on the passing vehicles. I didn’t want to stay out for too long, especially after everything that had happened recently.I lifted my hand when I spotted a cab approaching, but before it could get close enough to stop, two dark vehicles pulled up in front of me.My hand dropped immediately.I recognized the leather cuts before I even saw the men wearing them.Bishop’s men.My heart slammed against my ribs, but I forced myself to remain still. Panic would only make me look like prey, and I had learned enough about men like them to know that they enjoyed watching people become frightened.I turned around and started walking in

The ride to Harlow’s Ridge felt longer than usual.Maybe it was because I knew I wasn’t walking into an ordinary conversation with Reaper this time. His call had come without an explanation, and men like him never summoned someone simply to exchange pleasantries. Whatever he wanted from me, I knew I wouldn’t like it.The headquarters appeared through the trees as I approached, its familiar walls rising behind the iron gates. I slowed my motorcycle before handing it over to one of the guards, then followed the same man who had escorted me the last time I came here.He didn’t say a word.Neither did I.We moved through the familiar corridors, but instead of turning toward Reaper’s office, the man took me in another direction. I immediately noticed the difference.“Where are we going?”“You’ll see.”I didn’t like the answer, but I kept walking. The doors opened into a massive room that looked nothing like an ordinary meeting space. A swimming pool occupied most of the center, its surface

Taking one of the men’s motorcycles from the garage would have been the fastest option for me to meet Damian and come back to the bar before Cain arrived from wherever he went. But I had no idea how to ride one.I’d be dead before I successfully rode a second out on the road. On the other hand, worrying about Cain sounded like I was a dog hiding its tails between its legs. But I wasn’t. I had every right to leave the bar and return when I wanted. But at the same time, I was only saying all these because I knew how crazy Cain would be when he realizes where I’ve gone.As much as I want to get back at him for lying to me about Eli, this little plan of mine wouldn’t do that much to get me to forgive him. And a part of me also didn’t want to get back at him at all. Deep down, whatever I felt for him, wouldn’t justgo away, even after the lie.Even after everything. And I found that rather unfortunate.Another thing I found unfortunate was seeing that nosy agent the minute I stepped out f

By morning, I had already made up my mind that I needed to find Damian.I had spent most of the night thinking about what he told me, especially the part about my father having a club that was still operating somewhere in Greystone. I didn’t know whether Damian had been telling me the truth or deliberately feeding me another lie, but there was only one way to find out, and that was by asking him questions he couldn’t easily avoid. The problem was that I had no idea where to begin looking for him.I should have taken the business card he gave me that day. At the time, I had been too angry and overwhelmed to think about it, but now I regretted leaving it behind. I couldn’t exactly walk around town asking people where I could find an FBI agent without attracting unwanted attention. Then I remembered the police station. If Damian was still working with the other federal agents in Greystone, there was a good chance I could find him there. It wasn’t a perfect plan, but it was the only one I

I took the longest shower I could remember taking, standing beneath the hot stream until the bathroom mirror had fogged completely and the water had begun to cool against my skin. I needed the silence, even if it was only the artificial silence created by the running shower. There had been too many questions lately, too many things I was hiding from the men, from Ava, and sometimes even from myself. The conversation with Ava kept replaying in my head, especially the look in her eyes when she asked about Victor Monroe and the disappointment that followed when I couldn’t give her the answers she wanted.I shut off the water and stepped out, reaching for the towel hanging beside me. My reflection stared back through the mist as I dried myself, and for a second, I barely recognized the man looking back. I looked tired. More tired than I was willing to admit.I walked toward the small cabinet beside the sink and opened it, reaching behind the bottles of painkillers and toiletries until my

Cain finally broke the silence, and somehow the calmness in his voice made what he was saying hurt even more. “I don’t know your father,” he said, holding my gaze. “Eli talked about you a lot when we were in the military. He told me you were his only family, and that was all I knew about you.” I stared at him, trying to decide whether I believed him, but there was something in his expression that made it difficult to accuse him of another lie without proof. I lowered my eyes, letting the silence stretch between us while memories of my childhood slowly surfaced.“I knew Eli would do something like that,” I finally murmured.Cain’s brows pulled together. “Do what?”I looked at him again, and for the first time since entering his office, some of the anger in my chest was replaced by something closer to sadness. “Take care of me.” My fingers tightened together in my lap. “He never really liked our parents. At least, he never liked the way they lived.” I paused, remembering things I had
