IRIS POV:

We were still sitting in the living room when a knock came.

Sarah sat right beside me on the sofa. Aurelian was in the chair across from us. Stephen stood near the door with his hands folded in front of him, pretending he wasn’t listening to every single word.

Three quick taps sounded on the door.

I frowned.

Aurelian glanced once at Stephen, and Stephen immediately opened the door.

Two men in dark suits stood on the porch. One of them held a sealed envelope. They looked calm and profe

IRIS POV:I thought about it as we drove, about walking into a building I had already been taken from once, and doing it, pretending to be someone I am not.I thought about the photograph. Two little girls in white dresses. My mother's handwriting. There were things that bothered me the most. Though Fiona might have been tethered or whatever Aurelian called it, the picture she showed me wasn't fake, and she was right when she said I didn't have any childhood pictures. My mother had written our butterflies on that picture, which meant my mother had known Fiona existed."Aurelian," I said."Mm.""Remember I told you the photograph Fiona showed me had my mother's handwriting on the back? Our butterflies. Keep them safe. 2002.""Yes, you mentioned.""Which means my mother knew," I said.He looked at me."What do you mean?" he asked."I am saying my mother knew about Fiona.""You're right, your mother knew," he said."You knew before I said it just now," I said."Yes," he said.I turned an

IRIS POV:Aurelian was already at the car when I came out of the building. He was standing beside the rear door, watching me come down the steps with an expression that looked satisfied."Congratulations," he said when I reached him.I stopped in front of him."No," I said.He looked at me."I didn't agree to that," I said. "You walked into that office and handed me a position over his company without asking me once. You made that decision in front of him, and you didn't even look at me before you said it.""I looked at you after," he said."Aurelian.""Iris."I held his gaze."I wanted to earn something," I said. "That's what I told you. That's what I said from the beginning. I didn't want things given to me.""I told you I would make you earn it," he said."You told me that after you had already announced it to Nicholas," I said.He looked at me for a long moment. Then he opened the car door."Get in," he said. "We can argue about this inside."I looked at the open door. Then I got

IRIS POV:Aurelian stepped inside, and I followed right behind him.My eyes went wide. Diane and Nicholas were kissing. He sat in the big Alpha chair, and she was on his lap, completely lost in each other. His hands held her face, her fingers were in his collar. They didn’t even notice the door had opened.Aurelian’s eyes changed the second he saw them. The gold went darker, deeper.I felt the shift in the air before I saw it.Diane felt it too.She pulled away from Nicholas first. Her eyes opened and landed on Aurelian standing in the doorway. The look that crossed her face was pure fear. I had never seen her look like that in all the years I had known her.Aurelian looked at her once.“Get out,” he said.He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t have to.Diane grabbed her bag from the chair beside her in one quick move and walked straight to the door. When she passed me, her eyes went wide again. She made a small, shaky sound I had never heard from her before, then she was gone, her heel

One of them held a sealed envelope. They looked calm and professional. Then one of them looked past Stephen and into the room. His eyes landed on Aurelian, and instantly, both men went completely still like they had seen a ghost.I watched it happen right in front of me. The realization of who they were seeing hit their faces, the color draining from the first man’s jaw. The second one took a half-step back without meaning to.Stephen stepped aside.“Come in,” Aurelian commanded from his chair, his voice staying completely level. “State your business.”The

IRIS POV:I sat on the couch, staring at the front door, my hands twisting together in my lap.The house was too quiet.Every second felt like it stretched forever. A sharp knock sounded on the door.I opened the door.Aurelian stood on the porch, and behind him, two of his men stood by the car at the curb. He looked at me like he was checking something he needed to confirm with his own eyes."Are you okay?" he asked."I feel a little dizzy, that's all," I said."Can I come in?" he asked."Oh, I'm sorry, come in," I said, stepping aside and letting him in.He came in, and I closed the door. We went to the sitting room, and he sat in the chair across from the sofa, and I sat on the sofa. For a moment, neither of us said anything.I took a deep breath and started from the beginning."I woke up in some kind of underground place. Its walls were dark glass. Fiona was there. She led me to a table and showed me a photo.""It was a photo of me and her. And what shocked me the most was that my

IRIS POV:I looked at my phone.Eleven missed calls from Aurelian's new number. Six from Sarah. Two from Julie, and I was fairly certain it was Sarah calling from her phone, which was exactly the kind of thing Sarah would do.I pressed Aurelian new number. It rang once, and he immediately answered."Are you alright?" His voice came through immediately, no greeting, just the question."Yes," I said. "I'm home. I'm okay."A pause. Brief."Where were you?" he said."I need to talk to you," I said. "Not on the phone."Another pause, longer this time."I'm coming," he said. The line went quiet.I set the phone down and looked at the ceiling and thought about the white eyes and everything that had happened and a woman who didn't know she was being controlled every time she got too close to the truth.I had a lot to tell him.I came out of my room and walked downstairs and sat on the couch, waiting for them to arrive.—·—·—·—·—·—·—SARAH POV:We stayed locked together, breathing heavily, bod
