KNOXX VOLKARIS POINT OF VIEW

The moment the doors shut behind Caidy, the silence in the hall lasted for all of three seconds before Lucien finally snapped. "She's playing us!" he shouted, and his voice bounced off the stone walls. "You’re all seriously going to let her walk around this house like she's some innocent little victim? That's exactly what House Ellis wants!"

Malakai had already sent Caidy upstairs to her room, so the five of us were finally alone. I leaned against the edge of the table and watched Lucien pace across the floor. He looked like he was about two seconds away from punching a wall, which, knowing Lucien, meant he would probably punch something expensive instead. Honestly, I was enjoying this way too much. Lucien always became entertaining when he was angry.

"Anyone from the House of Ellis doesn't surrender," Lucien continued. "They plan. They manipulate. Magnus practically handed her to us and walked away. You don't think that's suspicious?" He stopped in front of Sylas and pointed at him. "You especially should know better. You were watching her the entire time. You saw her reaction, and yet you're still convinced she's telling the truth?"

"Because she wasn't lying," Sylas replied.

Lucien stared at him. "Oh, please."

"I watched her when Magnus left. Her pulse increased, her breathing changed, and her fear was genuine. Whatever she realized when she touched her neck was not an act."

"She's a witch, Sylas." Lucien threw his hands up. "She can use magic. She could have altered her pulse, hidden her fear, or put some kind of fucking witchcraft over you without you noticing."

Sylas looked almost offended. "You think I wouldn't notice witchcraft? You could tell that to anyone but don’t you accuse me of something that low-class."

"I think you're too damn confident."

"And I think you're too damn paranoid."

"Guys," I cut in before they could start throwing furniture at each other, "you're both starting to sound like an old married couple."

They turned toward me at the same time. I grinned. "Don't stop on my account."

Lucien's glare could have killed me. "This isn't funny, Knoxx."

"That's where you're wrong. It's a little funny."

"What's funny about this?" he demanded. "Our enemy's daughter just walked into our house, her father threatened us, and then he left without a fight. You don't find that suspicious?"

I shrugged and pushed myself away from the table. "Of course I find it suspicious. I'm not stupid."

Lucien opened his mouth but I immediately held up a hand. "Don't answer that."

He rolled his eyes.

I glanced toward the stairs where Caidy had disappeared. "The strange part isn't that Magnus wanted something. The strange part is that he looked so damn confident when he left. A man like him doesn't give up unless he thinks he has already won somewhere else."

"Exactly," Lucien said. He pointed at me as if I had finally grown a brain. "That's what I've been trying to say."

"Yes, but you're making it boring."

"How am I making it boring?"

“Because you're yelling?”

"Because none of you are taking this seriously!"

I laughed. "I'm taking it seriously. I'm just not going to start screaming about it."

Lucien muttered something under his breath but I ignored him and crossed my arms. "Besides, Caidy looked scared. Like really really scared. Whatever Magnus did, she clearly didn't know how to deal with it. I don't think she's working with him."

Lucien's eyes narrowed. "You don't think?"

"Nope."

"Then you’re a fucking fool.”

I rolled my eyes. Before I could argue again, Malakai's voice cut through the room.

"Enough."

His voice was calm, but the warning behind it made everyone shut up. Malakai stood near the stairs, his attention fixed on us. He had barely moved since Caidy left, but I could tell his patience was already running thin.

"She's under our protection," he said. "That means none of you will treat her like a prisoner."

Lucien scoffed. "Protection? She's an Ellis."

"And she's bound to us, whether we like it or not." He let out a harsh sigh. “And she’s my mate. I already claimed her.”

The room went quiet.

Even I stopped smiling for a second.

There it was again.

My mate.

Malakai had said those words in front of Magnus without hesitation. He had claimed Caidy in front of the entire Great House and put his name beside hers. Now he acted as if the whole thing had been nothing more than a political decision.

I wasn't buying it.

Evren finally spoke from the armchair near the hearth. "You really expect us to believe that was the only option?"

Malakai turned toward him. "It was."

"You could have found another way."

Malakai's brows pulled together. "Such as?"

"We could have refused her… or detained her… or anything."

"And started a war?"

Evren's expression didn't change. "Maybe."

"In our own home?" Malakai asked. "With our forces already preparing for the Ascendant Trial?"

Evren didn't answer.

Malakai took a slow breath before he spoke again. "If I hadn't claimed her, Magnus had every legal right to take her back. You all know that. He could have walked out of here with her, and none of us could have stopped him without violating Great House law."

Lucien shook his head. "And you didn't have to claim her as your mate."

Malakai's expression hardened. "Then who was supposed to do it?"

Lucien opened his mouth, but no answer came.

Malakai looked at each of us. "If not me, then which one of you was going to step forward? Which one of you is willing to claim her as your mate?"

LUCIEN VOLKARIS POINT OF VIEW "Step back, Malakai," My voice came out low enough that the entire room went quiet. I didn't raise it, but I didn't need to. Something in my tone made even Malakai pause, his eyes narrowing as he looked at me. The anger under my skin had become something heavier, darker, and far harder to control. Malakai turned toward me. "Lucien—" "Move." He stared at me for a long moment. His eyes dropped to my fangs, then returned to my face. Whatever argument he had been ready to make died before it reached his mouth. He finally stepped aside, but his expression warned me that he didn't like it. I walked toward Caidy without taking my eyes off her. She watched me approach with wide, uncertain eyes, and something about that look made my pulse kick harder. She had spent so much time looking at me with anger and defiance that seeing fear in her eyes felt almost intimate. I shouldn't have liked it. But I did. My anger still burning beneath my skin, but I couldn'

LUCIEN VOLKARIS POINT OF VIEW It grated on my nerves watching Malakai hover over Caidy like some damn guard dog. Every time his hand touched her shoulder or his voice softened when he spoke to her, something ugly twisted inside my gut. I told myself it was irritation. It had to be. I had spent years hating this woman, and I refused to let one moment of weakness change that. She had hurt us before, and I wasn't stupid enough to forget it just because she looked helpless now. Then I saw something move beneath her skin, and every thought in my head stopped. Sylas knelt beside her with his hands glowing pale white as he pushed his healing magic into her body. The moment the magic touched her skin, it vanished. Caidy jerked against the bed and sucked in a sharp breath, her fingers clawing into the fabric as another wave of pain tore through her. "Fuck," Sylas muttered under his breath. He tried again, but the result was the same. His magic broke apart before it could even reach the wou

CAIDY ELLIS POINT OF VIEWThe agony did not just hurt. It tore through me until I could barely breathe, and every nerve in my body screamed at once. My back felt like someone had poured molten fire down my spine, while a sharp, unbearable pain spread through my arms, legs, and chest. I tried to move, tried to curl into myself to escape it, but even the smallest movement sent another violent wave through me. I was awake—gods, I was painfully awake—but my voice felt trapped somewhere deep inside my chest. I opened my mouth more than once, desperate to scream, yet nothing came out except broken breaths. I could feel them before I saw them. The five brothers were close, their presence surrounding the bed, but I could not bring myself to open my eyes. I was too exhausted, too terrified that if I looked at them, they would see how completely helpless I had become. My body shook beneath the sheets, and I pressed my lips together as another wave of pain ripped through me. It was getting wors

LUCIEN VOLKARIS POINT OF VIEW Knoxx let out a quiet laugh behind me as he gawked towards my snake and Caidy. “Apparently, he likes her.” “Apparently, he's lost his damn mind.” “I think he's choosing his side,” Knoxx said. I shot him a look. “Don't start.” Then, I look towards my snake. I scoffed. “Fucking traitor.” Sylas ignored us and moved toward the bed. His attention stayed on Caidy as he reached down and shook her shoulder. “Caidy. Wake up.” She didn't move. Sylas frowned and shook her again, harder this time. “Caidy.” Nothing. The sight made something uneasy settle in my stomach. She wasn't pretending. At least, if she was, she was damn good at it. Malakai stepped forward, his patience finally gone. “I've had enough of this.” He grabbed the edge of the blanket and yanked it back. The air left my lungs. For a second, I couldn't move. My eyes went straight to Caidy, and every thought in my head disappeared. All five of us went dead still, our breathing locking in our

LUCIEN VOLKARIS POINT OF VIEW The sharp pain at the base of my nape snapped me awake. For a few seconds, I lay there trying to make sense of it. My first thought went to Eli, my pet python. Knowing that damn snake, I figured he had somehow escaped his cage and decided my neck looked like a good place to sink his teeth into. I glanced over the side of the bed and found him exactly where he should have been, curled beneath the frame and completely asleep. I brushed the thought aside as soon as it came. Eli was disciplined. He was trained better than most men I had dealt with, and he knew better than to attack me. “Fuck,” I muttered. I dragged a palm over my face before rubbing the burning skin at the back of my neck. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to force myself back to sleep, but the pain only grew worse. The throbbing turned into a white-hot burn that spread beneath my skin until it became impossible to ignore. It felt like someone had pressed a branding iron against my flesh

CAIDY ELLIS POINT OF VIEW“Defective.”The word stayed in my head long after Lucien said it. It hurt more than I wanted to admit, mostly because some part of me already believed it. I had spent years hearing that I was a disappointment, a disgrace, a problem that needed to be fixed. So when Lucien threw that word at me, it did not feel like an insult. It felt like confirmation of everything I had already believed about myself.I slid down against the door and pulled my knees to my chest. My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. I had cried enough in my life, and I was tired of letting other people see how easily their words could break me. If they wanted to hate me, then fine. I would let them. Maybe it was easier that way than expecting something from people who had every reason to want nothing to do with me.Maybe they were right about me. Everything between our houses had been ruined long before I arrived at the Volkaris estate, and I had made choices that gave them more than enough r
