Chapter 5 Fiancée

Penulis: Jasmine
Evelyn's POV

I walked the streets with no destination in mind. Kids ran past me laughing, chasing each other. It felt like they lived in one world and I lived in another.

Late spring in San Verona. The maples were fully unfurled, rustling in the wind.

I looked at it all, and I didn't know what to do next.

Losing my temper had cost me the job. Once I was out of the building, the wind dried the tears on my face and my head cleared.

Thinking about the things Brode had said, all the contempt he'd thrown at me, the hurt came rushing back, sharp in my chest.

Yes, three years ago I'd said brutal things to push him away.

But what else could I have done?

Was I supposed to turn to a boy with no power, no money, a boy who couldn't even keep his head above water in his own family's politics, and say, "Please help me, give me money"?

I was already in hell. Was I supposed to drag an innocent man, a man I loved, down into it with me?

I couldn't do it.

Back at my apartment, I stared blankly at the bedroom ceiling, turning over every piece of the past. It drained the last of whatever I had left.

When I came out of it, it was already eight at night.

The failed interview had killed my appetite. I went to the kitchen, cut two slices of bread, spread butter on them, and forced them down.

My phone lit up with a new email. I assumed it was some automated system notice. I tapped on it without thinking, and then I actually read it.

"Dear Ms. Evelyn, we are pleased to inform you that you have passed the initial screening for the Legal Counsel position at Aganya Company. The second interview is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at three—"

I wasn't even finished reading before my heart slammed back to life.

I never expected to pass. I even closed the app and opened it again just to make sure the email was still there, to prove I wasn't imagining it.

I had a job. A real one. The kind with a salary most people could only dream of.

I threw myself onto the bed, and suddenly my mother's debts didn't feel like the end of the world anymore.

Sooner or later, I'd pay off every cent.

And then, finally, my life would be mine again.

I went in the next day. To show I took it seriously, I ironed my suit one more time before leaving.

After picking up the location details from the front desk, I took the elevator up.

I was walking and trying to figure out the layout of the floor when I walked right into someone.

When I looked up, a delicately beautiful young woman was standing there, frowning, rubbing her shoulder.

I stood there, stunned. "I'm sorry," I said on reflex.

A cluster of people was already helping her up. She shot me a resentful look. "Why don't you watch where you're going? What department are you in?"

She said it loud enough to draw everyone's attention.

"I'm here for an interview. I was looking for the right office and wasn't paying attention."

Her expression shifted. "Oh, you're the one interviewing today?"

"Yes."

Everything about her turned vicious in an instant.

Her eyes went cold. She dragged them up and down my body, then let out a contemptuous little sniff.

"Someone like you thinks she belongs in this company?" She made a show of brushing nonexistent dust off her expensive suit and stepped closer. "Look at what you're wearing. It's embarrassing, really."

The executives gathered around her started laughing quietly.

"Do you have any idea what I'm wearing?"

I stayed quiet, head down. She gave her secretary a look.

"Ms. Sofia is wearing a custom piece by a famous Milanese designer. Mr. Brode accompanied her personally to select the fabric. Forget the price tag. Just having the Don's attention makes it priceless."

The secretary said it with her nose in the air, then turned to check Sofia's face for approval.

"Take my advice. Don't bother with the interview. Get as far from here as you can. Offending Ms. Sofia is the same as offending Mr. Brode."

Sofia was looking down her nose at me. "Got that, small-town?"

Of course I knew who Brode was. I was never going to forget that name.

I raised my head slowly. "Then… you are…?"

"I'm his fiancée. Do you have a problem with that?" Sofia kept that look down her nose.

"No… no problem…"

I didn't understand why, but the moment she said it, something hollowed out in my chest.

An ache I couldn't name crept in.

I turned and walked silently back the way I'd come. The people behind me were still sneering.

"If you know what's good for you, stay away from this company. Keep making our future Donna angry and see what happens."

"Seriously. Who does she think she is, bumping into Ms. Sofia?"

I already knew, deep down, that a man like Brode was out of my league now. Sooner or later he'd fall for someone who belonged in his world.

But hearing it said out loud, hearing that Sofia was his fiancée, still dropped a stone somewhere inside me.

I went through the rest of the interview in a daze. I couldn't even remember how I got out of the room.

In the elevator on the way down, Sofia's words kept echoing in my head, along with all those mocking laughs.

I couldn't stop thinking, if I got this job, would it be a gift or a curse?

A deep, steady voice broke into my thoughts.

"Miss. You're in the wrong elevator. Please step out."

Brode was surrounded by bodyguards, looking at something on his phone. He seemed to be talking to another executive and hadn't noticed who was standing in the elevator.

I glanced at the panel and realized it was the private elevator for the top brass. My face went hot.

I mumbled an apology and stepped out.

Just before the doors closed, I glanced back. My eyes met Brode's.

There was something playful in his gaze. The way a hunter looks at prey.

Evelyn's POVWhen my makeup was done, I stood in front of the full-length mirror. The burgundy dress followed every line of my body. The fabric had a subtle, luxurious sheen under the light. The neckline was cut with precision. The silver-white heels elongated my frame. The delicate chain at the ankle caught the light in soft flashes. The woman in the mirror was a different person from half an hour ago.Knowing tonight's debacle had been Sofia's jealousy — not Brode's cruelty — loosened something in my chest.Or maybe it was seeing Brode's reaction. That strange, irrational sense of safety again.I pushed open the dressing room door and walked down the carpeted hallway toward the staircase. The spiral stairs were laid with deep gray carpet, the brass railing polished to a gleam. One hand on the rail, the other lifting my hem, I descended carefully. My heels clicked against the wooden steps — crisp, rhythmic. The jazz was still playing. Saxophone, lazy and intimate.Conversation, clinki

Evelyn's POV"Oh my, who do we have here?"The voice came from the far end of the room — dripping with theatrical sweetness and undisguised delight.I followed the sound. Sofia was walking toward me through the parting crowd. She wore a deep-blue velvet gown tonight. The neckline was cut to perfection — neither too modest nor too revealing. Her hair was pinned up, showing a long, elegant neck and a pair of teardrop emerald earrings. Her makeup was flawless. The lipstick was a deep wine-red. When she smiled, the outer corners of her eyes lifted.Sofia held a glass of champagne in her slender hand and walked toward me, slow and deliberate."Ms. Evelyn." She stopped in front of me, her gaze starting at my bunny ears and sliding down with open contempt. She scoffed. "Your look tonight is... certainly memorable."Stifled laughter rippled around us."For a reception welcoming Brode's aunt," Sofia tilted her head, her voice drawn out, lazy and cutting, "dressing like this — I have to say, I d

Evelyn's POVWhen the sunlight squeezed through the gap in the curtains, I opened my eyes.My brain felt like it was running on rusted gears.I didn't know when Brode had left the apartment. All I remembered was working on the proposal, getting to page four before my eyes gave out. After that — nothing.I got out of bed. My slippers were lined up neatly beside it.I never lined my slippers up like that. Only Brode did.At the clifftop estate, he'd always organized my things with that same quiet precision.I shoved the memory aside and headed for the bathroom.Three splashes of cold water to the face and I was semi-functional.The soreness below was still there. Going to the office wasn't happening. I was about to message Brode for leave when my phone buzzed.A message from Brode.I opened it: "Party tonight. You're attending. Seven o'clock. Car will be downstairs."No discussion. No question. Classic Brode.I stared at the screen and started typing a refusal: "What party? I don't feel

Brode's POVEvelyn had fallen asleep in the back seat.I didn't call the driver.Moments like this had been gone for a long time. The city lights streamed past the windows, garish and hollow. None of it felt the way it used to.She used to sit shotgun, ice cream cone in hand, heels kicked off, legs thrown shamelessly across my lap. She'd tell me that when I made it big, she wanted me to buy her lots of ice cream.I'd laughed and told her most women demanded luxury bags and real estate. How was she settling for ice cream? She'd grinned. "Because right now, ice cream is the best thing in the world. Especially when you're the one buying it."After the breakup, I'd convinced myself a thousand times over that she was nothing but a mercenary. I hated myself for not seeing through her.But then I'd think about all those small moments, and it didn't add up.She was pure. If she weren't, she would have come crawling back the moment I had power — like every other woman who threw herself at me wi

Evelyn's POVHe and I sat in the bathtub, his arms wrapped around my waist. His fingers worked to clean off the leftover lube and fluids, while his massive cock pressed against my lower back. But his mind wasn't there. He'd just finished a phone call. The casino's top management apparently knew him — the layer above Claire was someone higher, and it wasn't a boss-subordinate relationship. It was an equal partnership.Brode seemed lost in thought. I didn't dare interrupt. This hard-won reprieve was too fragile. I didn't want it to vanish."Does it still hurt?"The sudden question made me flinch. We were pressed close together. I could feel his breath on my neck, the faint warmth of it making my skin tingle."I..." I dropped my head in shame. "Still a little."I couldn't meet his eyes. Then his lips touched my shoulder — a soft, brief kiss. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again. I'll have Legal put in a week's leave for you."My breathing stopped. I almost thought I was hearing things. Evelyn's POVThe room reeked of cigar smoke. Brode watched me writhe on the bed through the hazy fog, his face emotionless like a cold-blooded demon. The stuff he'd ordered over the phone was right by his side—a fancy little box. From my angle, I couldn't see inside, but it felt utterly terrifying.I believed now that Don Brode could do anything. But I couldn't even hold a thought for a full minute—the dildo jammed in my lower body vibrated intensely, practically shattering my hips.By now, it had lost all meaning as a toy; it was like a torture device, shoved into me by Brode's own hands. The initial tingly emptiness had faded, replaced by the agony of being violated by that huge thing. It made me shake all over, tears streaming nonstop."I'm sorry...
