Chapter 44 The Weight of Choosing

last update Last Updated: 2025-08-19 17:12:35

Audrey’s POV

The smell of damp concrete, like mildew that no amount of bleach could remove, was always present in the underground hideout, and it hit my lungs as soon as we descended the ladder. Although it wasn't actually a house, it was the only location where no one else could see, hear, or follow us.

This place was our temporary hideout since we successfully burned down the fake clinic.

And it seemed as though the world above was no longer ours after tonight, after the girl in the cage, and after the fire and blood.

Rina didn’t let go of me, not for once. Even when Caleb carried her down the ladder, and not when Derek slammed the hatch shut.

Adrian stumbled bleeding through the door with his arm around Derek’s shoulder. Rina just clung with fingers tight in my sleeve, and her face hidden against me.

As if I were the sole thing holding her to this planet.

I was not sure of how to handle her. I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I would have been in that cage if things had g

Audrey’s POVThe moment Adrian’s voice cut through the ballroom, low, cold, and dangerous, I knew something was about to crack. He didn’t just say it. He declared it, like some king making a decree. She’s with me. Loud enough that every stupid pair of ears in that glittering ballroom turned toward us. And I felt my entire body lock because, what the hell? No one was supposed to claim me like that. Not here, and not in front of everyone.“Back off,” Caleb snarled first. His hand was still wrapped around mine, heat burning, and I could feel the tension in his shoulders like he was two seconds away from tearing the whole place down.Derek moved next, stepping in between like a storm ready to rip open the ceiling. “Don’t start this shit here,” he growled at both of them, voice low but carrying, because people were already whispering, and heads were twisting.Adrian didn’t even blink. His mask caught the chandelier light, but his eyes, gosh! his eyes cut straight through the stupid lace an

Derek’s POVThis is the D-day, the day of the dance. They’d covered the old town hall floor in glittering cloths and fake snow and hung crystal lights and fancy tiles, but under all of it I could smell wolves. Packs crammed together, trying to look like normal students in rented tuxes and cheap masks, pretending this was just a dance. Pretending they weren’t calculating every move and every glance. My tie was already strangling me, so I tugged at it, ignoring the looks from some of the teachers by the door. I wasn’t here for them. I wasn’t even here for the damn ball.I was here for her.The music was too loud, some pop remix that made the floor vibrate. People spun and laughed, clutching each other too close. My jaw locked tighter the longer I scanned the entrance, and there was no sign of her.Caleb was across the room already playing his part, grinning, looking around, and surrounded by girls giggling behind their masks. He didn’t even bother hiding that he was waiting for her too.

Audrey’s POVThe fallout from the stupid dance list hadn’t even cooled before things got worse. By the time gym rolled around the next day, half the school had decided it was open season on me. I heard whispers trailing me down the hallway, girls laughing behind their hands, and guys making dumb comments like, “How’s she gonna dance with three at once?”And then there was Caleb. He didn’t wait, and he didn’t even give me a second to breathe after Coach barked out the warmup drills. He was already there, leaning against the bleachers with that cocky grin like he’d been planning it since breakfast.“Partner up, princess,” he said, ignoring the fact this wasn’t a partnered activity. He dragged his hand through his dark hair, all smug and shiny with sweat from the earlier laps. “Figured we should practice for the ball. Because I don’t want you stepping on my shoes in front of the whole town.”I rolled my eyes so hard I swear it hurt. “We’re in gym class and not dance rehearsal.”“Exactly

Audrey’s POVI should’ve known the moment the loudspeaker went live during homeroom that nothing good was about to happen. You could feel it, that hush across the desks when everyone looked up at once, waiting for whatever announcement was going to screw with our week.“Attention, Ravenfalls High,” Principal Helena’s voice boomed, way too cheerful for eight o’clock in the morning. “We are excited to announce this year’s Winter Masquerade Ball! Attendance is mandatory for juniors and seniors. Please remember: every student must sign up with a partner. The sign-up sheet will be posted outside the main office at lunch.”And that was it.The second the speaker clicked off, the room exploded. Girls squealed, guys groaned, and desks screeched back. Somebody yelled, “I’m not wearing a mask; that’s creepy as hell!” Another voice shouted, “Shotgun, asking Bella first!” and half the room booed.I wanted to sink straight through the floor. My stomach dropped like someone had thrown a bowling bal

Audrey’s POVThe Unity Oath ceremony hadn’t even finished properly. Everyone was pretending it was a success, acting like the packs were united, but it wasn’t unity. It was panic. Elders cutting things short before blood was spilled. Wolves itching for a fight but forced to swallow it. Hunters lurking in the dark like sharks circling a cage. And me, standing dead center while my wrist decided to glow. Not a faint shimmer, and it was not something I could hide anymore. Actual burning light crawling across my scar like someone had shoved fire under my skin. People saw it. They definitely saw it. That was the part I couldn’t scrub out of my head. The whispers, the stares, the way every face in the crowd turned toward me at once. Like, oh, she’s the problem. She’s the reason this whole thing’s about to blow up.By the time Monday hit, the entire damn town knew.Walking into Ravenfalls High felt like walking straight into a glass box. People didn’t even pretend to be subtle. Heads turned,

  • Claimed by Three Alphas, Fated to One   Chapter 61 Her Choice, Their War

Audrey’s POVI swear Ravenfalls High had turned into a rumor factory overnight. It wasn’t even subtle anymore. The second I stepped into the hallway, voices dipped low and heads bent together like they were conspiring. By third period, it was no longer whispers; it was straight-up stares, wide eyes tracking me like I had grown a second head.“Marked.” That was the word being thrown around like wildfire. I caught it drifting from a locker corner, murmured in the cafeteria line, and spat out with some kind of smug glee from the cheerleaders at their table. She’s already marked. Someone claimed her. That's what they are saying everywhere. The thing about rumors is they don’t care about truth. They don’t even care who they hurt. It wasn’t like any of them actually knew what the hell had happened the other night, but apparently the world had decided I was no longer just Audrey Dauval, new girl. Nope. I was property now, stamped and tagged. I'm off the market, you know what I mean?“Don’t
