LOGINVera's Pov The words hung in the air between us, poisonous. I regretted them the instant they left my mouth but there was no unsaying what I’d already said. Dante finally looked up from his book, and my breath caught in my throat.Dante finally looked up from his book and I gasped. His eyes were no longer gold. They were pure red. The hybrid had taken over completely and I could see fury radiating from every line of his body as he slowly, deliberately closed the book and set it aside.“I–” my voice came out small, “Dante, I didn't mean –”He rose from the chair and walked towards me and I found myself backing up until my spine hit the wall behind me.Great. I'd pushed too far. I’d said the one thing that would break every patience he was clinging on to.He was going to hurt me, or maybe even kill me and it was all my fault for having no control over my temper. I squeezed my eye shut, waiting for the pain that would come when his hands tightened around my throat or his claws tore
Vera's Pov I was up before dawn, unable to sleep again after everything that had happened. My reflection's words about getting stronger, about leading packs, about becoming more than I'd ever imagined. You can't keep being weak, I told myself as I laced up my training shoes. No more hiding. No more waiting to be saved. The training room was empty when I arrived, which was what I wanted. There was no one to watch me, or judge. I started with running. I did sprints back and forth across the room until my lungs screamed. Then I went on to do burpees, push ups, sit ups and jumping jacks. Everything I could think of, stringing exercises together without pause, without rest.My muscles burned and sweat poured from my face. My vision was getting bluey from exhaustion but I was not going to stop. Stronger, my reflection's voice echoed in my head. You need to be stronger.“Again,” I gasped out loud as I dropped into another set of push ups even though my arms were shaking so badly I coul
Vera's Pov I didn't understand what any of it meant. But when I opened my eyes and found Dante staring at me, his face etched with worry and awe, all of that faded into background noise. “Dante,” I said. I threw my arms around him before he could even respond and sobbed hard against his chest. “I was so scared. I got lost and couldn't find my way back and everything was dark and I was all alone –”"Shh, I've got you." His arms came around me, holding me so tightly I could barely breathe but I didn't care. "You're safe now. I'm here.”“I'm sorry,” I gasped, between sobs. “I'm so sorry for what I said at the party. I was just…I just felt so overwhelmed and you weren't listening and I –”“No,” he pulled back enough to cup my face and made me look at him. “Don't apologise. You're right. I should have considered your feelings before throwing that big party. I know being the center of attention terrifies you. But I was so focused on doing something special that I didn't stop to consider
Dante's Pov The moment Vera stormed out, I felt heavy guilt. She was right about what she said. I'd been so focused on maintaining control and showing the pack that despite the attack we were still strong. And I'd completely missed my mate falling apart right beside me. I'd dismissed her attempts to talk to me, brushed off her discomfort, and prioritized appearances over her actual wellbeing. And now she was gone. "Stop the party," I said, loud enough for the nearby pack members to hear. "Everyone go home. The celebration is over.”Confused murmurs rippled through the crowd but people began filing out, sensing from my tone that arguing would be a bad idea. Within minutes, the hall had emptied except for Sofia, Elena, and a few senior pack members."I warned you," Sofia said, her voice tight with frustration. "I told you this was too much. I said, throwing her a huge party after everything she'd been through was a terrible idea. But did you listen? No. You just –”"Not now, Sofia.
Vera's Pov I ran. I had no idea where I was going. My only plan was to put enough distance between me and that party and between myself and Dante's hurt expression that made guilt start creeping in even through my anger. My feet carried me down packs I didn't recognize. The Blackwood Pack's building was a maze compared to the familiar layout of the Russo compound, and within minutes I was completely turned around. But I didn't stop. The need to leave was in overwhelming. It drowned out all logic and reason and the small voice in my head that whispered that I was being ridiculous.I finally burst through an exterior door into the cool night air, gasping as the temperature change hit my overheated face.I stumbled forward, away from the light spilling from the windows behind me, away from the music and laughter and celebration I'd just abandoned. My legs carried me into the tree line, branches catching at my clothes and hair as I pushed deeper into the woods.Only when I couldn't see
Vera's Pov I stood frozen as my brain tried to understand what I was seeing. The figure in the centre of the room was not an enemy that had come to gloat over my capture. It was Dante. And behind him, Sofia, Elena and Nyx stood with big smiles on their faces, holding what looked like – party decorations?“SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VERA!” They chorused in unison. Confetti exploded somewhere and rained down in colourful streams.Balloons bobbed against the ceiling. A banner hung across the far wall reading "Happy Birthday Vera" in glittering letters.I blinked rapidly. My mouth hung open but no sound came out."Vera?" Dante moved toward me, concern replacing his smile when he saw my expression. "Cara, are you –”The tears came without warning, huge wracking sobs that shook my entire body. My knees gave out and I would have hit the floor if Dante hadn't caught me, pulling me against his chest as I completely fell apart."Hey, hey, it's okay." His arms wrapped around me securely. "Yo
