Final Chapter – The End

I could barely breathe. My hands were trembling, clutching Isla to my chest as the creatures lunged at us from every shadowed corner. The forest around us was a blur of teeth, claws, and glowing eyes—but none of it mattered. None of it mattered except one thing: Cruz.

“He’s alive,” I whispered, more to myself than anyone. “He has to be.”

Blade’s grip on my arm was iron, steadying me. “Focus, Nova. Don’t let them separate you. Don’t let them—”

Before he could finish, a piercing roar split the night, sending every creature staggered backward. I stumbled, almost dropping Isla, but the roar was familiar, impossible to forget: Cruz.

My chest heaved. “Cruz!”

And then he was there. Bloodied, bruised, but alive. His knife flashed through the shadows, precise, lethal. Every strike sent creatures stumbling, falling, but they kept coming.

“I told you I wouldn’t leave you,” he growled, eyes locking on mine, fierce and stormy, and in that instant, everything else—the fear, the danger, the glowing

“You’re next.”The voice slithered out of the trees, low and mocking, and every instinct in my body screamed run. But I couldn’t move. My legs refused. My heart felt like it had been ripped straight out of my chest and dragged into the darkness after Cruz.“Cruz…” I whispered again, voice cracking. “Cruz—please—”Isla trembled violently in my arms, the glowing mark on her shoulder pulsing hotter and brighter with every heartbeat. Each pulse sent a shockwave through the clearing, and with every flare of light another pair of glowing eyes flickered into view.“We are surrounded,” Blade gritted out, slashing at a creature’s throat before spinning toward me. “Nova, we have to move. NOW.”I couldn’t. I couldn’t leave him. Not Cruz. Not when he was somewhere in that darkness being—No. No. I refused to think it.“I’m not leaving,” I whispered, shaking my head. “I can’t. I can’t leave him—”Blade grabbed my arm, hard enough to snap my focus back. “You want him alive? Then MOVE. Do you hear m

“Bring me the girl.”The words didn’t echo — they slithered through the air, quiet but heavy, like they already knew they’d be obeyed. My blood froze. Cruz stepped in front of me so sharply I felt the wind of his movement. His arm locked across my waist, dragging me back, shielding me with his entire body.“Over my dead body,” he growled, voice low, lethal.Blade moved too, positioning himself a step off to the side, angles calculated, muscles tense, daggers raised. His eyes flicked to Cruz, then to me, then back to the darkness—wordlessly saying we don’t let anything take her.Isla whimpered in my arms, burying her face against my neck. “Nova… I’m scared.”“I know, baby, I know.” I held her tighter. My hands shook. My heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear myself think.Branches cracked to our left.A low snarl rolled out from the shadows.Blade cursed under his breath. “There are more. At least three.”Cruz didn’t flinch. “We hold our ground.”The glowing eyes drifted closer —

Nova’s POV“Bring me the girl.”The words cut through the night like a blade. Not shouted. Not rushed.Just cold. Controlled. Certain. My heart stopped. Completely. Isla’s fingers dug into my shirt, tiny nails trembling, her little body curling into mine like she wanted to disappear into my skin.Cruz went absolutely still. Not breathing. Not blinking. Not moving.Just… still.A predator’s stillness. Then—slowly—his head turned toward the voice. “Say that again,” he rasped, voice dark enough to freeze bone. The figure stepped forward. One step. Another. The shadows peeled back like they were scared of him.Ryder.His mask gleamed. His boots crunched on broken twigs. His posture was relaxed—too relaxed. Like he was strolling into a meeting he’d been preparing for his entire life.He lifted his hand and pointed at Isla again.“Bring me. The girl.”Cruz’s voice dropped into something inhuman. “Touch her and I will end you slower than—”“Spare me the speeches,” Ryder cut in, bored. “You’v

The glowing eyes didn’t blink. They hovered there in the darkness—too high to be human, too steady to belong to anything natural. My breath snagged in my throat, my arms tightening around Isla as Cruz shifted in front of us, body tense, knife raised.“Show yourself,” he growled, voice low, sharp, dangerous.A deep, distorted laugh rolled through the trees. “You’re surrounded, Maddox.”Blade moved instantly, stepping to Cruz’s left. “Cruz… this feels wrong. Real wrong.”The glowing eyes blinked once, then disappeared—like they sank back into the shadows.“Where did it go?” I whispered, my voice barely holding together.Cruz didn’t answer.Instead, he grabbed me—fast, rough, protective—pulling me practically into his chest.“Don’t move,” he murmured against my ear.My heart slammed against my ribs. “Cruz… what do they want?”“You,” he said without hesitation. “And Isla.”His hand tightened on my waist. “They’re trying to pull us into a trap.”Another voice echoed from the opposite side

The whisper in the darkness didn’t fade. It lingered, curling through the trees like smoke, deliberate, knowing. I pressed closer to Cruz, heart hammering, Isla clinging tightly to my side.“Did you hear that?” I whispered, voice trembling.Cruz didn’t answer immediately. His hand brushed my shoulder, firm, grounding. “I did,” he said finally, low and dangerous. “And it’s close. Too close.”Blade crouched ahead, knife ready, eyes sharp. “It’s stalking us. No doubt about it. Whoever—or whatever—it is… it knows our patterns.”I swallowed hard. “How do we fight something we can’t even see?”Cruz’s gaze snapped to mine, stormy, protective, and… impossible to ignore. “We don’t fight blind,” he said, voice low, rough. “We fight smart. We fight together.”I could feel the heat in his words, the tension in his body pressed just a little too close, the unspoken pull between us. My pulse quickened, and I had to force myself to focus on survival, not… him.Isla whimpered, and I shifted, pre
