Chapter 2d - Molly

The door swung open. Declan stood there, impossibly tall and broad-shouldered in a crisp white button-down and black slacks. His golden hair was slightly mussed and the shadow along his jawline indicated he hadn't shaved since I'd seen him in court this morning. He looked edible.

"Molly," he purred in that deep voice. "I'm so glad you came."

He stepped back to usher me inside the lavish suite. I clutched my purse tightly and moved past him, my heart racing as I detected his warm, woodsy scent. Declan's presence overwhelmed my senses. I couldn't think straight.

"Please, have a seat. Can I offer you a drink?"

I perched nervously on the plush leather sofa. "Just water, thank you."

Declan crossed to the wet bar and poured a glass of water over ice and a glass of bourbon. I couldn't tear my eyes from him. The way his shirt stretched taut across his muscular back, the confident grace with which he moved - he took my breath away.

When he turned, our eyes locked again. Heat coursed through me at the intensity of his gaze. Declan's sensual mouth quirked into a knowing smile. He could tell the effect he had on me already.

Handing me the chilled glass, his fingers deliberately brushed mine. I shivered at the contact, my skin tingling. Declan sat on the opposite end of the sofa, angling his body toward me. He rested one muscular forearm along the back cushions, totally at ease. Everything about his posture was both relaxed and predatory at once.

"I'm so pleased you agreed to have dinner with me, Molly," he murmured, those blue eyes burning into me. "Ever since I saw you in the courtroom, I haven't been able to get you out of my mind."

My cheeks flushed crimson. I shouldn't enjoy hearing these words from him, and yet they thrilled me. He looks utterly delectable in his tailored shirt, the flickering candlelight accentuating his rugged features. I take a sip of water, hoping it will cool the heat flooding through me.

"So, Declan," I begin, aiming for a light, breezy tone, "I have to ask - why go through all this trouble just to have dinner with little old me? You could’ve just asked me out on a date."

His lips quirk up. "I figured beautiful women like you must get hit on constantly. I wanted to stand out from the crowd, make an indelible impression on you.”

I bit my lip as I let my gaze pour over him. “You did that the second you walked into the courtroom.”

This elicits a wolfish grin from him. “I’d hoped as much, but I don’t like leaving these sorts of things to chance.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “These sorts of things?”

“Meeting the woman of my dreams.”

“Ha,” I say dismissively, though I blush like a schoolgirl. Certainly, that was just a hokey line to get into my panties, but damn if it’s not working. Not that he’d have to work all that hard. It’s been a while and this guy is a freaking god.

“I can’t express how grateful I am for what you did for my family,” I say, opening myself up to him. “We were desperate. I was this close,” I pinch my fingers together, “to asking my boss for the money.” I roll my eyes. “That would’ve been such a huge mistake.”

Declan’s face clouds over with something dark. “So, there’s nothing going on between the two of you?”

I snort with laughter. “Not if I can help it. He’s been after me for months, but he’s my boss and married for God’s sake.”

“Is that the only reason?” he says, his jaw tense.

“That and he’s such a misogynistic pig. I hold a law degree and passed the bar exam, I’m an attorney for crying out loud, but he treats me like I’m his glorified secretary.”

“Only a fool would fail to appreciate you for all that you are, Molly,” he says in a low rumbling voice that makes my delicate parts quiver. “Not only are you unbelievably beautiful, but you’re also highly intelligent and driven, a woman of principle and moral fiber. Why else would you be so determined to work in the DA’s office instead of going for a much higher-paying job at a law firm?”

His intense gaze is infused with more than simple passion, it was genuine interest, like he wanted to listen and truly hear my answers. It’s … refreshing.

“I guess you could say that I’m a crusader for the cause of truth and justice,” I reply jauntily, squaring my shoulders. “I want to put the bad guys away. The guys that prey upon men like my dad and my brother.”

He cocks a brow and sips his bourbon. “Has working as a prosecutor always been your dream?”

“Back in high school, me and my best friend,” I pause and lean in, “her dad was a police detective, we decided we’d go into law enforcement, not as cops or anything dangerous like that, but as attorneys. Ironically, she’s off in Manhattan working at some hoity-toity law firm while I’m stuck here in Charlotte working in the DA’s office.”

He chuckles. “Doesn’t seem fair of your friend.”

“Well, while we were at law school, her father was murdered by some mafia-type thugs and it messed her up.” I frown at the recollection. “We sort of lost touch there for a while, then she turns up in New York City working at a law firm that probably has those types of guys as clients. I don’t get it, but it’s her choice.”

He nods perceptively. “But you don’t regret your decision. To stay here in Charlotte and work for the DA’s office?”

I scrunch my nose as I consider my answer while loving the fact that Declan genuinely seems interested in me and my life, beyond tonight.

“I need to stay close to home given my mom’s condition since I can’t rely on my dad.” I shake my head. “My brother … well, you know his situation. So, it’s best I stick around to keep an eye on them. You know?”

Those beautiful blue eyes of his bore right through me, penetrating to the very core of me like he wanted to possess every ounce of me.

My musings were interrupted when Grant abruptly stood and objected, claiming the defense attorney was badgering the witness. The judge overruled him. I forced my attention back to the trial unfolding before me. The defense proceeded to efficiently and incisively dismantle our case by bringing forth a surprise witness who utterly discredited one of our key witnesses as a known liar and taker of bribes. None of these things were unknown to me and I’d stated as much to the jury but instructed them not to let that detract from the validity of his statements which were backed by facts. What I didn’t know was that our witness had a personal grudge against Finn because Finn had slept with his girlfriend a year ago. I could see in the jury’s eyes that this tainted everything he’d testified to earlier, calling it all into question.I tensed in my seat. Thank goodness we still had our star witness waiting in the wings. We'd kept him hidden away in an undisclosed location for his safety. His tes

I nearly jump out of my skin when my cell rings. Is it Declan? No! I sigh with heavy disappointment.“Oh, hey, Lexi.”“Jeez, could you sound a little less excited to hear from me?” Lexi laughed, from the noise in the background, I’m guessing walking down a busy NY street, maybe on break.“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Lexi,” I said quickly. “I was just … uh … never mind. What’s up, girl?”“Not much, I just wanted to firm up plans for Saturday night,” Alexandra said. “I was thinking we’d meet up for drinks around 7 p.m. and then have dinner. Oh, and Ellen Baily texted me to say she’ll be in town that weekend too, should I invite her?”“Yeah, yeah, sure,” I replied, suddenly wondering what Declan would be doing Saturday night if she were out hanging with the girls. “Molly, chica,” she chuckled. “What’s up? Do you not want to hang out?”“Of course, I do,” I said with way more enthusiasm than I felt. I couldn’t let my best friend know she was already playing second fiddle to a man I only met thr

That morning in court, the case continues to move along, steadily building against Declan’s cousin Finn. My boss is only too pleased with himself, viewing this as yet another feather in his cap. So, what that I did most of the investigative work. In his mind, I'm the girl that gets him great coffee, that, or the woman he's constantly trying to get into bed. As if. Bed ... the word conjures all sorts of naughty images that set my cheeks ablaze. I'm extremely aware of all the parts of my body that had Declan's heady essence rubbed on it. At first, I thought he was joking when he told me that I couldn't wash it off and that he wanted me to wear it while I operated as an esteemed officer of the court. Any other man, I would've told him to get over himself and would have rinsed myself clean. But two things stopped me, the strident, commanding tone of his voice brokered no argument, and secondly, a tiny part of me was strangely turned on but the notion. It was a tiny part that leapt with e

My heart throbbed against my ribs as I reveled in the afterglow of the torrid night shared with Molly. Every inch of my body ached in the best possible way, a gratifying testament to the primal, uninhibited passion we unleashed upon each other. Sleep had eluded us for the most part, as we explored every erotic possibility imaginable. As the morning’s first rays peeked through the blinds, casting an ethereal glow across the bedroom, I watched Molly stir beside me, her face still flushed with the ecstasy we’d shared. I marveled at her beauty, her skin like porcelain against the crisp burgundy sheets, her hair a cascade of spun gold. I felt a surge of protectiveness and possessiveness towards her, a primal urge to shield her from the harsh realities of the world.“I’ve got to take a quick shower, then I should get going,” Molly murmurs, reluctantly pulling away from my embrace. “I can’t go to work in this.”I take hold of her arm before she leaves the bed. “Actually, I bought you somethi

We order a bottle of wine and chat comfortably through appetizers, but there’s an undercurrent of heat in Declan’s gaze, full of unspoken promise that makes me want to call the waiter over for the check so we can get the hell out of here and back into his bed. But I must admit, Declan is an engaging conversationalist, drawing me out with thoughtful questions and funny anecdotes. He seems genuinely interested in my life and passions, not just the physical attraction between us. When our entrees arrive, Declan clears his throat, expression turning serious. "Molly, can I ask you something?" At my nod, he continues. "If your family was well taken care of ... your mother had round-the-clock care, your father's debts resolved ... would you consider leaving Charlotte?"I freeze with my fork halfway to my mouth, stunned. "I ... I don't know. I've never thought about it." I set my utensil down, brow furrowing. "Why do you ask?"Declan caresses my hand. "Because I care about you. I know how mu

The moment the judge calls recess, I'm on my feet. I grab my purse, mumbling some excuse to Grant as I hurry from the courtroom. My heels click rapidly across the tiled floor as I weave through the crowds, my heart racing. When I feel the vibration of Declan's text, I nearly knock over an elderly woman in my haste to get to the stairwell. Taking the steps two at a time, I burst through the back exit into the alley. There, idling by the curb is a sleek black limousine. Before I can react, the door swings open and Declan steps out, looking criminally handsome in his tailored suit. "Hey babe," he says, flashing that grin that makes my knees weak. I don't hesitate, racing across the pavement and flinging myself into his arms. Strong and steady, they wrap around me like a shield, enveloping me in his warmth and irresistible scent. Our mouths crash together desperately, weeks of yearning spilling over even though we were together a few hours ago. I want to slap myself for acting like a
