Rosa and I held hands as we walked into the salon, Zac following behind us grumpily. She just got back from her trip and she brought back a lot of things for me. Zac decided to resume the tradition of taking his mother to her appointments. I could tell it was difficult for him but I assured him it was going to be alright.

The salon smelled like lavender and vanilla, the kind of scent that instantly made your shoulders relax. Soft music played in the background, something jazzy and slow. The attendants recognized Rosa immediately.

“Mrs Gonzalez! We’ve missed you,” one of them chirped.

Rosa beamed. “I’ve missed you girls too. This is my Jane,” she said proudly, squeezing my hand as if she was introducing her own daughter.

Zac cleared his throat behind us. “I’ll be right here,” he muttered, already pulling out his phone like he was preparing for battle.

Rosa laughed. “You always act like this place will swallow you whole.”

“It almost did once,” he replied dryly. “Four hours, mom. Four

Zac and I were talking to a business partner when I spotted Mr Burke and Olivia from the corner of my eyes. I almost concluded they weren’t going to show up but they did. Mr Burke had a scowl etched on his face, he looked like he was about to strangle someone. Olivia looked upset but as usual she looked beautiful, she wore a red dress that accentuated her features. I wished her attitude matched her beauty, she would have been the perfect girl ever. I tapped Zac slightly and cocked my head in their direction. We excused ourselves from the man we were talking to and began walking towards Mr Burke and his daughter. Zac placed his hand on my waist. “They are very intimidating people, they’ll scare you but you don’t ah e anything to worry about,”I nodded. I didny feel scared at all. Maybe it was because I had quite an amount of alcohol in my system or maybe it was because I had on a beautiful dress and I felt like a sexy woman. “Zac,”Mr Burke's voice was gruff and harsh. The sc

The day of the gala arrived. It was a gala hosted by some of the most influential businessmen and tech investors in the country, and Zac had hired a stylist to make sure there was no room for error.I stood in front of the full-length mirror while two women hovered around me, fixing, adjusting, perfecting. My dress was nothing like what I would have chosen for myself and maybe that was the point. I’d usually go for something simple because I liked to play it safe or I’d wear any dress Nate picked out. But tonight, I felt sexy, I felt like a grown woman who could do whatever she liked. It was a floor length satin gown in a deep emerald green, hugging my waist before flowing effortlessly to the floor. The back dipped just low enough to be daring without being scandalous, and the slit on the side revealed my leg when I walked, subtle but intentional. My hair was styled in waves that cascaded down my back, I never wore my hair like that, it was always in a bun. My makeup was elegant gl

Rosa decided to spend the weekend with us, it was wholesome. She went about telling whoever cared to listen that I was her future daughter in law. I wasn’t upset, it was kind of cute and playful. Zac was always at the back reminding her that I was engaged to Nate. I wasn’t oblivious to her playing match maker, she’d make us do things together or she’d make side comments that made me blush and made Zac embarrassed. The previous day, she had written down a grocery list and insisted that we get it ourselves instead of Mr Vincent. Zac grumpily agreed. It was cute, seeing the back and forth between him and his mother. Today, she had written another list, she wanted fruits from the store and she asked if we could go get it together. “Why is my mom trying to match us?” Zac asked as we pulled out of the driveway, one hand on the steering wheel, the other drumming lightly against it.I laughed, adjusting my seatbelt. “Trying? She’s not subtle at all. Your mother wants a wife and a child

We were in the office on a Thursday afternoon when Zac received a message from Mr Burke. You see, to the public, Mr Burke was this perfect and hand working man that could never hurt a fly. His grass to grace story was one that was referenced often in church. Ever since I got to know the real him, I've been disgusted. “You don’t have to read this,” Zac said to me. “He’s the vilest person I know,”It was sweet, how Zac was protective of me. But curiosity got the better of me.“I can handle it,” I said softly, extending my hand. “I’ve already seen worse written about me.”He hesitated for a second, then passed the phone to me.The message was long. It was wrapped in fake pleasantries and ended with a thinly veiled threat.Zac, my boy. I see you’ve been making rather interesting decisions lately. Bringing personal affairs into company matters is never wise. The board is watching. Investors are asking questions. You wouldn’t want unnecessary scrutiny over your leadership or over

I wouldn’t stop thinking about Zac and all the women he had been with. I was angry on their behalf. It was wrong to sleep with someone and ghost them. He didn’t even have the decency to send them a text. Why did they have access to his office? Why didn’t he keep his love life away from his work place?I retyped and deleted the email I was supposed to send to the creative director. I had new ideas that I wanted to share with him but I was too upset to think straight. I avoided Zac like a plague. When he tried to speak to me, I’d reply in a monotone voice. When he made me coffee, I’d reject it. I didn’t stay with him in the office as much. I was on the third floor with Clara. She was super sweet and I found out that we had common interests. I began retyping the email again when he walked into the office. He had a cup of coffee in his hand. I almost rolled my eyes. If I rejected the coffee he made me in the morning, why did he think I was going to accept the one he bought from a ca
