Chapter 5

作者: Jojo
The next second, Xavier turned and ran, as if he couldn't bear what he'd just witnessed.

Fiona's expression changed instantly.

She pulled away from Joe, leaving him with a hurried "Wait here," before rushing after Xavier without a second thought.

All Xavier had done was see them together, and she'd panicked enough to chase after him.

What the hell did that make Joe?

He stumbled to his feet and straightened his disheveled clothes.

Feeling completely hollow, he walked out of that sickening corner like a puppet going through the motions.

But just as he stepped out the nightclub's back door, someone shouted from above.

"Someone's jumping!"

Joe instinctively looked up.

A figure was falling straight down from the upper floors of the nightclub.

A sickening thud followed.

The body landed directly on Joe, who had only just stepped outside.

Agony tore through him.

Something warm and sticky splattered across his face and clothes.

In the final seconds before everything went black, he caught a blurry glimpse of the person who had fallen on him.

It was Xavier.

The same Xavier who had run off in tears just moments earlier.

...

When Joe regained consciousness, the first thing he noticed was the strong smell of antiseptic.

He was barely aware of being wheeled toward an operating room.

A nurse's anxious voice reached his ears.

"Both men are critically injured! They've got bleeding in the brain and multiple fractures. But we just received a huge number of patients from a pileup, and we're running dangerously low on blood. We've only got one operating room left!"

Her voice grew more urgent.

"Whoever doesn't get surgery first might not survive! Major General Spencer, who should we operate on first?"

Fiona's voice came a moment later, hoarse and strained.

"Save them both! Can we transfer one of them to another hospital?"

"We can't, Major General! Neither of them is stable enough to be moved. You... you have to make a decision."

A suffocating silence followed.

Joe struggled to open his eyes.

Through the narrow gap between his eyelids, he saw Fiona standing outside the operating room.

Her jaw was clenched tight, her expression torn with an anguish he'd never seen on her face before.

Finally, as though the words took every ounce of strength she had, she spoke.

"Save... Xavier first."

Save Xavier first.

Even though Joe already knew the truth, hearing her make that choice with his own ears shattered what little was left of his heart.

The pain was so intense he could barely breathe.

And yet...

He smiled.

Beneath his oxygen mask, the faintest smile touched his lips.

It was a smile utterly devoid of warmth.

Of course.

Of course she'd choose him.

Then darkness swallowed him again.

He had no idea how much time had passed before he slowly woke up.

To his surprise, Fiona was sitting beside his hospital bed.

The moment she noticed he was awake, she leaned forward.

"Joe? You're awake. How do you feel? Does anything still hurt?"

Joe slowly turned his head away, avoiding her touch.

"You already made your choice outside the operating room. You chose to save him and left me to die. So why are you pretending to care about me now?"

Fiona clearly hadn't expected him to hear that conversation.

Her body stiffened.

She fell silent.

For so long that Joe thought she wasn't going to answer at all.

"Xavier used to work with the military's performing arts unit," she finally said. "Then he got seriously ill, and his health has been poor ever since."

She paused.

"Given his condition, he would've died if he hadn't been operated on immediately. That's why I chose him first."

She looked at Joe again.

"Afterward, I immediately contacted other hospitals and arranged for you to have surgery as soon as possible. Joe, I didn't abandon you."

Joe listened without a trace of emotion on his face.

Inside, though, he felt nothing but cold, empty despair.

He gave a bitter laugh.

"Fiona Spencer, if he's just someone you used to work with in the military, just some sickly former subordinate you feel responsible for, then why did he completely lose it when he saw us together?"

He stared at her.

"Why did he go so far as to jump off a building?"

Fiona fell silent again.

Joe watched her swallow.

A long moment passed before she finally answered in a low voice.

"Xavier was deeply in love with someone once. But for various reasons, they couldn't be together. He's been bottling up his feelings for a long time, and he's been emotionally unstable."

She continued calmly.

"Seeing us together at the nightclub that night might have triggered something. Maybe he just couldn't handle it and acted on impulse."

Joe looked at her quietly.

At her sharply defined jaw.

At her calm, unreadable eyes.

He'd never realized she was such a good liar.

He remembered something he'd said shortly after they got married.

He'd been half joking, but he'd meant every word.

"Fiona Spencer, there's one thing you should know about me. I hate being lied to more than anything."

He'd looked at her and continued, "My mom spent her whole life believing one lie after another from my dad. In the end, those lies even cost her life. So if you ever lie to me, I'll walk away and never look back."

Back then, Fiona had lowered her head and kissed him.

"I'll never lie to you," she'd promised in a husky voice.

But now?

One lie after another.

Joe had never believed love was something he couldn't live without.

To him, it was something that made an already good life even better.

If a relationship worked, great. He'd stay.

If it didn't, he'd find someone else.

And if he couldn't find anyone worth being with, he was perfectly capable of living a wonderful life on his own.

So the moment he confirmed that Fiona had lied to him, she was already out of his life.

For good.

The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered."Hello?"Joe's voice was calm, with the same slightly lazy quality Fiona remembered so well. Her throat closed instantly.A thousand things she'd wanted to say crowded into her chest, but in the end, only a few hoarse, broken words came out."Joe, it's me."Her voice was almost a sob."I saw the article. You look happy."She swallowed hard."I'm glad you're doing well."A pause."I just wanted to hear your voice."Silence filled the line.It lasted so long that Fiona thought he was going to hang up on her again. Then she heard Joe sigh softly. When he spoke, his voice was calm. There was no anger in it.No hatred.Only the distant peace of someone who had truly moved on."Fiona, it's all in the past now."Fiona's breath caught."I forgive you."Her fingers tightened around the phone."Not for you. For myself. I needed to let go so I could really move on with my life."His voice remained gentle but d

Fiona returned to the house that had now completely lost its master and locked herself inside the dark bedroom. She drew every curtain, shutting out all light and sound from the outside world.Empty liquor bottles littered the floor. The air reeked of alcohol and despair.Fiona sat on the floor with her back against the bed, clutching an old candid photo of Joe from his younger days in Hemsouth City. The picture had already begun to yellow with age.Beside her sat a small recorder. It played the same short clip over and over, a recording that had accidentally captured Joe humming to himself one day when he'd been in a particularly good mood at home. His voice was clear and slightly lazy. Now, every note cut into her like a blade.Sometimes Fiona would let out a quiet, almost deranged laugh.Other times, she'd bury her face in her knees and let out muffled sobs like a wounded animal. When the aides brought her food, she angrily swept everything onto the floor. She stared in

Fiona rushed back to the house as soon as she'd finished dealing with an urgent military matter. All the way home, she clung to one impossible hope.Maybe the baby would soften Joe eventually.Maybe this new bond between them meant their relationship wasn't completely beyond saving. But when she pushed open the front door, she was greeted by a deathly silence. The house was empty.Even emptier than the last time he'd left.Every one of Joe's personal belongings was gone again. On the coffee table sat only a velvet jewelry case and a folded piece of paper.Fiona's heart dropped.A terrible sense of dread seized her at the same moment a sharp pain twisted through her abdomen. With trembling hands, she picked up the paper. It was a record showing that abortion medication had been collected from by a private clinic. The date was yesterday.Under the recipient's name were two words:Joe Kingston.Joe had secretly slipped abortion medication into something she'd consumed. He

After the initial shock wore off, something Fiona didn't dare hope for began to flicker deep inside her.A tiny spark of hope.A baby. Her and Joe's baby.It was a new bond between them. One that could never truly be erased.Maybe with this baby, Joe wouldn't be so determined to leave her.Maybe there was still the smallest chance she could win him back.Fiona cautiously looked toward him.But the moment she met Joe's eyes, that fragile hope shattered. His gaze was cold, filled with disgust and absolute resolve."Get an abortion."Joe's voice was flat and icy."I won't let you have this baby."Fiona felt as though an invisible hand had closed around her heart. She could barely breathe. She rushed over and crouched in front of him, reaching for his hand."Joe, please! Don't!"Her voice trembled with a desperation he'd never heard from her before."This is our baby! I was wrong. Everything was my fault. Hate me. Punish me however you want. But the baby didn't do anythin

Fiona looked into his eyes. There was no hesitation in them. No lingering attachment. Only absolute determination to leave her.Something inside her finally snapped.Panic and despair overwhelmed her.She grabbed Joe by the wrist.Ignoring his struggles and furious protests, she dragged him up to the rooftop. The setting sun had painted the sky a haunting shade of bloodred.Fiona pulled Joe toward the edge of the roof. Beyond the thin railing was a drop of several stories. She clutched his arm tightly, her eyes bloodshot. Her voice trembled with unbearable pain and madness, half threat and half genuine despair."Joe, if you really leave... if you actually walk away from me..."She pointed over the edge, her eyes wild."I'll jump!"If me dying will make you hate me less, if it'll make you feel even a little better, I'll do it right now!"Her voice shook."You think I won't?"Fiona had Joe trapped against the railing, his body dangerously close to the edge as the wind whi

Fiona's expression darkened instantly. Her eyes turned frighteningly cold. She barely spared Xavier a glance before barking an order at the aides behind her."Get him out of here. And from now on, he doesn't set foot on this property without my permission."The aides immediately stepped forward. They politely but firmly took the scissors from Xavier and moved to escort him out.Xavier's eyes widened in disbelief."Fiona! How can you treat me like this? Have you forgotten what we used to...""Xavier."Fiona cut him off. There wasn't a trace of warmth in her voice. Her icy gaze settled on him."For the sake of what we once had, I promised to make sure you had access to treatment until you recovered. That's the last kindness you'll ever get from me."She paused, and her voice turned even colder."But if you ever come here and bother Joe again, if you cross that line one more time, don't expect me to honor even that."Her eyes hardened."After that, you're on your own."Th
