Thea

I nearly leap out of my skin as I spin to face Blake, my heart pounding so hard I see spots before my eyes. “I'm sorry. You didn't come home last night. I didn't want to just leave. I wasn't sure what to do and I made a judgment call. I'm sorry if it was the wrong one.” The words just pour out of me, shaking as hard as I'm sure my hands are as my mouth feels dry and my pulse thunders in my throat. My hand slips up to gently wrap around my neck as if that'll calm the thumping there, and his eyes lock on my fingers for a moment before ticking back to up meet mine.

Even though it's first thing in the morning, he doesn't look disheveled. No, he looks clean, showered, groomed, well-dressed in slacks and another fitted tee-shirt - this time in a deep green - that shows off his powerful arms and flat abs... he looks ready to take on the day.

He looks absolutely delicious, but I have no right to be thinking about him like that. He's my boss.

“I'm not upset, I'm grateful.” His clipped ton

Lyla doesn't seem to have anything to say, and Troy takes her shoulders in both hands, giving her a slight shake. “Did you call the cops? Did you report her missing?” Lyla shakes her head. Troy lets out a sigh, his hands falling away from her shoulders as he shoves a shaking hand through his perfect hair, clearly upset. “You need to call them now, Lyla.” The frustration edging his voice echoes within me, and I can't believe that she or the child's parents didn't immediately call the cops first thing when they found her missing. I don't know how old this niece is, but does that matter? If she’s missing, they need the cops involved. Which only bothers me more and makes this whole thing more confusing. I'm struggling against the urge to open my mouth and ask questions. I don't want to give myself away, given that I've been hidden in this room listening to a private conversation. But I also want answers. Lyla's phone rings, ending the struggle within me. She quickly answers, and I s

Bella I don't think they have any idea that I am at the front door of the restaurant. Now I have ducked completely out of sight, watching as Lyla is ejected from the place. Moments later, I see Troy come out and get in his car. I’m quick to get back to my car and follow. Without missing a beat, Lyla is hot on his tail too, but something tells me that’s planned. As soon as they both take off, I follow a bit slowly behind them, hoping that they don't notice me. After a moment, I know exactly where they're going - Club Red. I can't help but wonder why he'd take her there; he has to know that she's following him. I was standing at the door, and I didn't hear them make any plans to meet up. Maybe their relationship goes deeper than I ever thought. For some reason, that idea has a pang in my stomach and a slight pain that twists my insides. Could he have been dishonest about their relationship all along? Even though that thought hurts, I can't imagine it's true. I don't think that h

“How dare I what?” I ask, taking a calm sip of my whiskey, refusing to even give her the attention of glancing in her direction. I know from experience there's no good way or right way to handle these situations with her, so instead I chose to go with a minimal response. “You know what you did.” Her voice lowers to a hissing whisper. I can sense that she's leaning in, trying to intimidate me with her presence or anger, or both. But she never has and never will bully me into feeling any kind of way. Any power she had over me, she lost a long time ago... and I’m going to keep it that way. I notice my friends beginning to shift and shuffle around the table, uncomfortable with the situation. I have no doubt that each and every one of them is wondering if they should step in, step up, say something, or keep to themselves. Honestly, it doesn't matter what they decide to do. Things aren't going to get better or worse. Once Lyla is fired up like this, there's no stopping her until she say

Troy “Have you tried just talking to her?” Sandra’s innocent question has me glancing in her direction. We’d all decided to meet outside Club Red, and we’re sitting around a table in one of Arson’s father’s restaurants. The guy came from an empire of fine food and dining but chose to make his way in the tech world instead. Still, it’s a nice, reasonably quiet place to sit where we can all talk. “Of course he has.” Thea’s gentle words and the way she touches Sandra’s hand takes any sting out of the statement before her attention turns to me. “She doesn’t hate you, she’s just not sure she can ever trust you. Trust is important in relationships.” “You don’t say?” Blake says to her, and she rolls her eyes at him in a playful gesture that leaves me wishing for a love as easy as theirs. On the other side of the table beside Sandra, Rico nods his head in agreement, and I notice how Sandra leans into him, an adoring smile on her face when she glances up into his face. Sitting at the tab

I turn away from him in hopes that he won't see the desperation on my face. One thing I hadn't considered is how the space might change the way I look at the man. Sure, he's always been commanding and sexy, but now he fits in this space and there’s something so incredibly sexy about him I’m not sure how to contain myself. So I stare at the double doors that I had commissioned specifically for this space and walk over to close them. I want him to see the art that I'd hung. I want him to see the lighting. I want him to see every little detail that I've added to this space. The lights, the brightness, the touch of dark, the shadows, everything that makes the area come alive perfectly in a way that's reminiscent of Club Red without being obviously derivative. I worked really hard on this room, and I'm absolutely proud of how the space turned out. Hard work, lots of money, seemingly endless sleepless nights... all seem like they've completely paid off. I turn to face him, waiting to se

Bella I’d be lying if I tried to say that this specific project completion didn't leave me with a hole in my heart. I've never been so sad to complete a job. Usually, the thought of moving on to the next big project has me excited, but this time... I’m mostly sad. I'm also excited because I'm curious what he'll think now that the finishing touches are finally in place. I put a hand on Troy 's shoulder to steady myself in the chair as I tie a blindfold around his eyes. I don't want to think about the fact that our time together is coming to an end. All I want to think about is how I'm about to surprise him with his brand-new office. Because the thought that now we're going to part ways and potentially never see each other again, or only cross paths once in a while at the club or when I'm hanging out with my friends who happen to be married to his friends, leaves me aching inside. Maybe my feelings for him are stronger than I thought. Not that that matters. “Are you sure this is
