Reed's POV

By the time the laughter faded from my chest, I was unsure whether it had been laughter at all. I stood leaning against the wall outside her dorm, my head tilted back against the bricks, breathing shallow. The laugh felt empty, as if it came from a place of disbelief rather than humor.

I slowly straightened, rubbing my face with both hands and muttering to myself, "What the hell am I doing?" This wasn’t me. I didn’t chase girls down. I didn’t stand outside their doors like some lovesick idiot after they ignored my calls and ducked behind blinds like I was a threat. I wasn’t that guy and I have never been.

I shook my head, trying to laugh again, but this time it didn’t even make it past my lips. I was ready to change for her and that was insane. I couldn’t afford to do that with who I was, and hearts were bound to break eventually.

Plus, perhaps this was karma. Maybe I was getting exactly what I deserved. The gods knew how many girls I’d left hanging. How many I’d kissed lik

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 115: Drifting

Lake's POV The door flew open, and Lux and Alec rushed in first, their faces filled with relief and concern. Reed followed behind them, but he lingered at the doorway, keeping his distance as Lux and Alec approached the bed. Lux was the first to reach me; she climbed onto the bed and wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her back."How are you feeling?" she asked, drawing back to look at me, but spoke again before I could respond, brushing hair away from my face. "Why are all these awful things happening to you?""I'm fine now," I said with a small smile, unable to respond to her second question and tell her that this time I had done this to myself.Alec took the next step forward, sitting on the bed and pulling me in for a brief, strong hug. "What did the doctors say?" he asked, and I informed them of their findings, which are consistent with Reed's. I also mentioned that they were running some blood tests to confirm.Reed spoke up from the doorway right at that moment. "I'm heading

Lake's POV Kairos finally settled down beside me, still buzzing with excitement about my new abilities, and I must admit that he made me somewhat enthusiastic as well. I’d be even more so if I weren’t worried about whether I’d be able to act normal in front of people and not have any slip ups. That made me think of Reed and wonder what his strengths were. But Kairos needed to ask him before telling me. My mate noticed my thoughtful expression and inquired as to what I was thinking.I told him I was thinking about Reed and his strengths, and that I was still waiting for him to ask Reed about telling me. I also mentioned that I had strengths now, something to lose, so perhaps he would be okay with Kairos telling me.I didn’t even finish. Kairos sat next to me and told me Reed possessed the same strengths as I did. He had super hearing, probably the same speed as I did, and could breathe underwater. My eyes widened.“Is he mer?” I asked before stopping myself and telling him I understoo

Third Party POV“What is going on with Kairos?” The question hung in the air, and Darian's lips moved before stopping again, without saying anything. What exactly was he supposed to say? Yes, Kairos had said to say whatever, but he knew he didn’t mean that.Furthermore, even if he meant it, he would never be the one to shatter their mother and Mira's world. This was Kairos's business to deal with. “Darian? What are you and your brother not telling me?” she asked, and only then did Darian find his words. He apologized, but said it was not his place to say what was going on with Kairos, and his response made his mother even more concerned. "Kairos can explain himself when he gets home," he added, before asking his mother to excuse him and telling her he needed to check on Mira. His mother's expression was beyond worried now, but she excused Darian, who made his way to the door without missing a beat. But he paused once he was out of his mother's sight, considering the answer he gave and

Lux's POVI drove like a mad woman as I tore through the roads, weaving past slower cars with my heart hammering in my chest. Kairos sat beside me in complete silence, his body rigid, his eyes trained out the window like he wasn’t even seeing anything. The only thing he’d said when he climbed into the car was a soft “thank you,” and that was it.I didn’t expect small talk, though. The worry on his face was enough, and I was as worried as he was. I glanced at him again as I turned down another road, and at that moment, his phone rang.He answered instantly, his voice low and not in any language I recognized. My brows knitted as I listened, trying to place it, but it was unlike anything I’d ever heard. It wasn't French, or Spanish, or German. It was too layered, which made it sound heavy.I wanted to ask what it was, but I held back, glancing at Kairos again and wondering if Reed spoke it too. Despite being cousins, they differed greatly from him. Reed could be intense, but Kairos and D

Third Party POVLake's vision was blurred like water on glass, and his head throbbed with a force that felt like something was pressing against the inside of his skull, attempting to claw its way out.His hands clutched the sides of his head as if he could keep it together and prevent it from splitting open, while his ears rang like they were about to bleed.Behind his eyes, another type of pain pulsed as if embers had been pushed into his sockets and allowed to smolder, while a high-pitched shriek ripped through the middle of his eardrums like needles being driven inward. He could see Reed's face getting closer, his mouth moving in frantic motions, but he could not hear anything. The sound had gone completely silent, and he opened his mouth to tell Reed he was dying, but nothing came out. His throat closed, air burning in his lungs, and he leaned forward, trembling, as the fire beneath his skin grew.Meanwhile, Reed gripped his shoulders beside himself with worry. "Fuck! What is this

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 110: Changing

Kairos's POVThe city blurred past the windows as Darian sat behind the wheel, one hand on it even though he was not driving. Watching him reminded me of my lessons with my mate, and I couldn't wait to get back at it. This driving thing was fun.Leaning against the window, I watched the sun high in the sky, and it felt so close from up here. It should have been a happy ride, with Darian's excitement to see our mother rubbing off on me, but my thoughts were still on my mate, whom I had left behind, and how hurt he was by the entire situation with Mira, even as we made up."Are you okay?" my brother asked, causing me to realize my expression was showing, and I quickly fixed my face as I looked at him. “Mom said she’s only staying for three days.”I paused and added quietly, "But Mira's not going back with her." Darian raised his brow while tapping the steering wheel. “She’s staying?”“Yeah.” I laughed bitterly and rubbed the back of my neck. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, brother.
