A rush of excitement coursed through me as I stepped off the jet at Silverglate Airport. I couldn’t believe I was finally here, ready to start my varsity journey and embark on a new chapter of my life. Alec and I hurried to the curb, where our ride awaited us. As we got in the car, I could not help but feel both nervous and excited. This was the first time I was so far away from my family and the familiar comforts of home, but the excitement of all the new experiences that lay ahead quickly drew me out of it. As we began driving through the city, I realized it was even more beautiful than I had imagined, and there was a sense of freedom in the air. My cousin Alec was in his fourth and final year, and he told me that life was fast here. "Wow!" I marveled at how the city sparkled at night. It was one of its most striking features, and as someone from a small, quiet town, it captivated me. It also made me understand why Alec almost failed his first year. Silverglate was synonymous with glitz and glam, and its appeal went beyond its physical appearance. It was a hub for the entertainment industry and home to some of the world's wealthiest individuals. I aspired to be a billionaire one day, so it was fitting that my journey to adulthood began here. I smiled at that, recalling how Lux said this was where we were going to make our first stories to tell our grandchildren. Lux and I were best friends, and our families were very close. Thinking of her, I pulled out my phone and turned it on to find three messages from her, all of which asked if I had arrived yet. "How long until we get to the Academy?" I asked Alec, and he said we were about 15 minutes away. I told Lux, and she lost it and blew up my phone. She started yelling at me about how I said I would arrive before her, so I explained that we were delayed at the airport. I sighed, sliding down the window as I ended the call, and then I heard Alec speak again, saying we were almost there before asking what I thought of the city. I told him it was beautiful, taking in the magical atmosphere as we drove past billboards and marquees advertising the latest blockbuster movies and upcoming events. Suddenly, a massive sign bearing the name Silverglate Academy appeared in front of me, causing my eyes to widen as I gazed at the largest and most beautiful university I had ever seen. I had seen it in pictures, but seeing it in person was an entirely different experience. Our transportation came to a halt, and guides wearing university emblems greeted us, while reporters buzzed around us, welcoming us and illuminating our surroundings with their cameras. Alec guided us through the halls, explaining that he wasn't staying on this side, as he wasn't a new student, and he wanted to see me in my room first. The guides were fine with it, and we took the elevator to the floor where my room was. We arrived, and they showed me the code but did not press it, instead ringing the bell because someone was already inside. The door opened after a moment, and Lux lost it when she saw me. She leaped into my arms, screaming, eliciting smiles from the guides, who had already formed an incorrect impression of us based on her reaction. People frequently assumed Lux and I were a couple; we pretended to be when she received unwanted attention, but that was where it ended, on pretense. I was gay, but only she and I knew that, as I hadn't had the balls to come out to anyone else yet. My luggage was brought in, and I introduced her to Alec once again. She had met him before, but I was not sure if she remembered him. Alec left after we confirmed our plans, promising to catch up later. Lux said she wanted to take a shower, but just then the door opened, and Alec entered again, saying he had forgotten to ask about the party. “What party?” I asked but Lux replied instead. "This party," she said, walking to the closet to retrieve a gift bag and hand it to me. She explained that the party was for first-year students and would begin in two hours. I was aware they held one, but I had no idea it was scheduled for tonight. Normally, they hold it after the formal orientation. The bag contained an invitation, a T-shirt with my name on it, and a keychain. Alec asked again about our attendance, to which we responded in the affirmative. We would not miss it. I asked Alec if he was going, and he said yes. We agreed to meet there, and he left again. Lux asked, "Are you going to shower first?" I replied, "She could shower first." "This is going to be epic," I muttered as I walked to my closet to unpack my belongings. ---- TWO HOURS LATER "Wow," Lux said in amazement as we entered the club where the party was being held, taking in the pulsing lights and thumping beat of the music. The air was thick with excitement as students danced and mingled, their enthusiasm infectious. This institution went all out with its parties, booking the most prestigious clubs to host them. The atmosphere was electric as we made our way inside, the bass vibrating through our bodies as we spoke while moving toward the bar, where we ordered drinks and took in the scenery. “Come, let’s sit down!” Lux said, and we settled into our seats, turning and facing away from the bar and towards the dance floor. And just then, I felt a magnetic pull toward the entrance, as if someone was watching us. I looked up, and there in the doorway stood the hottest guy I had ever seen. “Shit!” “What? What is it?” “I think I just found him.” “Who?” "The guy who yanked not only me out of the closet, but the hangers, shoe rack, and last season's wardrobe." ----–------- Author's Note Thank you for diving into this story with me! I wanted to give you a quick heads-up about one of our key characters, Kairos, who happens to be a merman. As a sea person, his world is different from ours, as is the way he refers to certain concepts. He may use "mer terminology" when describing some objects, concepts, and experiences that might sound unfamiliar. But don’t worry—I will make sure that you always know what he’s talking about. This choice is intended to enrich the story and draw you deeper into his point of view. I hope you enjoy discovering his world as much as I enjoy writing it! Happy reading! –-------------Two days earlier Neridia Kingdom Prince Kairos "Are you ready?" Father asked, to which my brother and I enthusiastically responded, "Yes, sir!" This was the day we had been waiting for, and we were ecstatic. We were heading to Silverglade, where we would study for the next two years. We had grown up and spent our entire lives in the ocean, as future kings, constantly in the spotlight and under the scrutiny of our parents and the general public. We enjoyed our lives, but sometimes the pressure got to us. This was our opportunity to relieve some of the pressure, as we would not be known as princes where we were going. As part of our disguise, my brother and I had to wear contact lenses all the time to hide our golden eyes, which were a defining feature of us, and Father reminded us of this. Otherwise, we appeared human, albeit taller than the average human, which was not a problem. We also went by Kairos and Darian Neridia because we were required to have a last name. Merpeople
Kairos My brother and I entered the club and the music's throb struck us like a wave. It was harsh, electric, and unrelenting; it had nothing in common with the melodic songs of the currents or the soft murmur of the sea. Reds and blues danced across the walls and reflected off a huge, mirrored ceiling as lights flashed in frantic bursts. For a moment, I could not tell if we had entered a celebration or a battlefield because of the chaotic way the bodies moved together. I looked at Darian, and for once, he seemed as out of place as I did. His shoulders were stiff, his usual confidence drained by the sheer force of it all. We were laughing a minute ago, teasing each other about who could blend in the best. We believed we were prepared. But now, standing in this room packed with people, their energy crashing over us like a storm, I was not sure we were prepared. The air felt heavy—almost too thick to breathe—and I was sure that if I could smell scents, they would be mixed and d
Lake My eyes were wide as I stammered but before I could find my words, his lips crashed into mine, stealing the breath from my lungs. The sensation silenced everything—the pounding music, the crowd behind us, and the racing thoughts in my head. The wall hit my back with a cold jolt, but it did not matter. His warmth consumed me, his hands pressing against my sides with a desire that mirrored mine. My fingers instinctively gripped his shoulders, pulling him closer as if letting go would send me plummeting. The kiss deepened, each movement more urgent than the last as if we were making up for all the moments that hadn’t been ours. His lips were firm but soft, his touch desperate, and when his teeth brushed against my lower lip, a shiver ran through me, leaving me completely undone. I gasped for air when he finally pulled back, though it felt like I’d lost more than my breath. His forehead pressed against mine, and in the dim glow of the club lights spilling through the doorway,
Lake “Lake… hey, are you OK? Lux's concerned voice finally snapped me out of my trance. I blinked, still cold from the events unfolding before me, and she quickly followed my gaze, her expression nearly matching mine as she took in the scene in front of us. "What the hell?" she whispered, causing the guys she was with to ask what was going on. She opened her mouth to respond, but I interjected, saying it was nothing and that I needed a drink. One of the guys suggested we go back to the bar, at which point Lux wrapped her arm around my waist and looked up at me with sad, stunned eyes. She must have figured out why I did not come back inside and realized I was with Kairos—the same Kairos who was now all over someone else.Plus, despite trying to walk straight, I was pretty sure she could see the limp in my step. My ass felt like it was on fire. I tried to fake a smile in response to her touch to hide the devastation inside me, but even I could tell I was doing a bad job. I was dead
Lux"Get away from him, you psycho!" I yelled again, taking long strides toward Lake and the girl who still would not let him go, and yanked him out of her grasp. She tried to explain that she was just comforting him, but I refused to listen and told her to leave. What the hell? One minute she was all over Kairos, and the next trying to pass for Lake's friend?“What the hell is she trying to pull?” I muttered as she disappeared around the corner, wondering if that damn Kairos had anything to do with what she was up to. I had never harbored such intense resentment for someone I didn't even know as I did for that bastard. “It’s alright. I’m here. You are OK,” I whispered as Lake clung to me, realizing just how wasted he was. I had never seen him so out of it.Helping him stand straighter, I draped his arm over my shoulder, and we began to walk out of the bathroom. He was stumbling badly, causing me to sway as well, and I realized I would need assistance getting him back into our room.
Lake's POV Lux and I exchanged a look, her eyes full of concern, but I couldn’t hold her gaze for long. My attention drifted to the girl standing behind us, and I still couldn’t find words to respond to her. I knew I didn't want her sitting next to us, but what would be my reason for chasing her away? I wasn’t a confrontational person, plus, as far as she knew, I had no reason to dislike her. She didn’t know I was gay or that something had happened between Kai and me, so she wasn’t aware that she did anything wrong. Regarding the kiss in the bathroom, I didn't know the whole story, and as I looked at her, my mind raced, desperately trying to piece together fragments of a memory that didn't exist.I pictured everything Lux had described to me, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember the incident.Instead, I was left with this hollow, sick feeling in my chest. I felt violated in a way I couldn’t fully articulate. I wasn’t even a tiny bit attracted to women. I was gay, str
Lake’s POVMy heart slammed against my chest as I locked gazes with Kairos. He stood there, the bathroom door securely locked behind him, his green eyes dark and intensely focused on mine. "What are you doing here, Kairos?" I asked him again, but he didn't respond. Instead, he began to move towards me, the fiery energy emanating from him filling the small stall.I froze, my breath hitching as the last remnants of my relief vanished, my body betraying me by cutting off in the middle of my release, every muscle tensing. "Stop," I yelled, my voice shaky and urgent, the words barely audible over the roaring in my ears as I wondered what others thought when they saw him enter this stall with me inside."Kairos! Stop!" I turned quickly, fumbling to tuck my dick into my briefs and zip my jeans, but I wasn’t fast enough. His hand shot out, grabbing mine, halting me mid-motion, and my eyes flew up to meet his. For a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of something in them—a glimmer of gold th
Lux’s POVI glanced down at my phone and tapped the screen to see the time. Lake had probably been gone for an hour or more, but I had not kept track of the time so I wasn't sure. With a sigh, I looked over at Olivia, who was sitting across from me, scrolling through her phone, and said, grabbing my backpack and Lake's, "I'm going to the restroom." She gave me a hazy nod and barely looked up before turning back to her screen, which made me regret telling her I was leaving. We hadn’t exchanged more than a handful of words since Lake left. Olivia had tried to make small talk, asking how long I’d known Lake or what classes I was looking forward to, but I kept my answers short, and she got the message that I wasn’t interested in talking to her. There was something about her I couldn’t put my finger on, something that set me on edge. Maybe it was the way she acted too familiar with Lake or the subtle glances she kept casting my way. I didn’t care that they went to the same high school—so
Third-Party POVLux was still frozen in the crashing waves, staring at the impossible vision in front of her, when the world was suddenly swallowed up in darkness again. The lightning was gone and Kairos, or whatever version of Kairos she had seen, vanished into the black. That was when the terror truly sank in.Her breath hitched and caught in her throat. The image of Kairos, the one with the tail suspended in the storm, burned itself into her memory like a curse. She had no idea what she had seen, but she knew one thing for certain: she needed to get out of there. Her feet pivoted before her mind could and sand kicked up behind her as she sprinted away from the shore, wild and ungraceful. Her knees buckled once, but she caught herself scrambling forward in the pitch black. The water's roar faded behind her, and her own ragged breaths became quiet, leaving only the pounding of her heart, which thrashed in her chest as if trying to claw its way out.A voice screamed in her head, "Run!
Lake's POVI watched Darian as he directed the car to pull over to the side of the road, his movements remaining eerily calm. My hands clenched in my lap as he stepped out and shut the door without saying anything, and I leaned forward, looking around for Kairos. But it was not just dark, but pitch black. There were no lights along this stretch of the beach, and no signs of life either. The only thing I could see was the ocean ahead, and the sound of it crashing and churning filled my ears, becoming louder with each passing second.I stared out, my heart racing, as Darian began walking down to the water, his steps unhurried. Pushing the door open, I stepped outside, my feet crunching into the sand as I took a step forward, but then I came to a halt.My legs would not allow me to move. "Is he over there?" I called out, pointing ahead into the darkness, hoping, needing Darian to say something that would calm my racing nerves and give me the courage to continue, and he stopped."Yes," he
Kairos's POVI lost all sense of reason and direction as Lake's phone rang and rang without an answer, and I removed my phone from my ear, checked the screen as if that would change anything before hitting redial. However, there was still nothing."Come on, come on," I muttered, pacing in a circle before coming to a complete stop. I couldn’t find my car keys. My heart slammed so hard it hurt as if it was trying to punch its way out of my chest, as I ran back to Darian's side of the dorm, still calling Lake as the phone rang again. The door was still ajar from before, and I saw his car keys immediately as I stumbled in and I snatched them without a moment’s pause. I had no shoes on. Just my pajama bottoms, but I didn’t care.My mind was too loud, my thoughts too jumbled, and I did not even try to hide my superhuman speed as I leaped down the staircase. There was no time to run like a human now. "Please help me," I begged any power that would listen, switching back to calling Darian as
Lux's POVThe cool air forced me to pull my robe tighter around me as I went outside. Reed's car was parked right in front of the building, just as he had said. He stepped out as soon as I appeared, and our gazes met in the orange glow of the streetlamp. He smiled, and I found myself returning it instinctively as we walked toward each other. Meeting halfway, we shared a quick hug."Sorry for bothering you so late," he said, pulling back.“It’s not a bother,” I quickly replied. “If it was, I wouldn’t be out here.” My voice came out sharper than I expected, but that was not the only thing that surprised me. The statement also surprised me, and I wondered if I was telling him or myself. He didn't seem to mind it, though, as he opened the car door for me. I slid inside, adjusting my robe and tucking my slippers under the seat.He took his seat on the driver's side. "So, did everything go well with what you needed to do earlier?" I asked, hoping to quickly relieve the tension that only I c
Lake's POVLux yawned softly and stretched her arms above her head before suggesting we call it a night. I glanced at the clock and realized how late it had become. I had finished my meal a while ago, and for the past hour, we had been sitting in the kitchen, talking about everything and nothing.I didn't think I had the energy to discuss what happened between me and Kairos. But despite my best efforts to avoid it, it came up, and I told Lux what had happened, how I wanted to talk to Kairos, what we said, and how we decided to be friends. She asked if it was not better to cut ties and avoid each other rather than hang out. But I told her that we would make it work.Lux did not press it; she was dealing with her own issues, such as Alec. The way he treated her still irritated me, and I didn't want to break my promise to Lux, but I was not going to let it slide. I planned to see my cousin first thing in the morning and talk to him.Getting up, I took my plate and mug to the sink for a q
Third-Party POV "I'm stupid for being heartbroken," Lux said. And Lake froze before the eggs in the pan sizzled and popped forgotten. He walked around the counter and wrapped his arms around Lux, engulfing her in a firm, protective hug that she fell into. Something twisted deep inside his chest. He was familiar with Alec and his friends' operations, having heard their stories when Alec returned home during breaks, the bravado, the casual bragging, the way girls were reduced to themes and moments. But he had hoped Alec would not pull such a stunt with Lux, knowing how much Lake cared for her. Lake's jaw tightened, and Lux gently drew back, just enough to look up at him, as she told him everything that had happened, including how Alec behaved as if he had never seen her before, how it broke her heart, and finally about Charlotte. She told Lake everything Charlotte said about Alec and his friends. But she paused as Lake's face turned red, and his eyes hardened with each word she s
Lux's POVReed looked at me as he ended the call, his expression changing to apologetic in a matter of seconds. “Hey, I'm really sorry… I need to go somewhere. Right now.”“It’s okay. I understand.”"I promise to make it up to you," he said quickly, and I nodded again, smiling slightly. One of the guys nearby must have overheard and chimed in, "She could hang with us; I will drop her off later—""–Absolutely not," Reed interrupted before the guy could finish, giving him one of those long, knowing stares that made me look between them both.Charlotte's words returned to my mind. They are all players. I shook the thought away as he gently touched my arm and motioned for us to leave. We turned and walked away, back towards his car. I could sense the tension in the air, as if he was half in his head and half trying to hold it together.“I really am sorry,” he said again as we reached the car. “It’s fine,” I replied. I was actually getting into the racing thing, but whatever was pulling hi
Lux's POVThe ride through Silverglade was breathtaking. After leaving the stadium and the chaos behind us, Reed suggested we stop for ice cream, which we did. There was this cute little roadside stand with the aroma of sugar and waffle cones dancing in the air. He chose mint chocolate chips, while I went with salted caramel. We talked as we drove, and the blur of streetlights and people faded, leaving only the quiet edges of town. Silverglade looked stunning in the evening light. And I stared out the window, watching everything pass by.Reed followed a winding road up a hill surrounded by trees that arched slightly over the road. The way the light hit them made them appear almost enchanted, and I pointed out the trees with curiosity. “What kind are those?” I asked, leaning forward to take in the long trunks and far-reaching branches.“Those..” he said, his eyes flicking between the road and me. “Jacarandas. You’ll see them bloom soon, purple flowers everywhere. My father refers to th
Lux's POVI took a step back and narrowed my eyes at the girl, trying to make sense of what was going on. "Excuse me?" I asked firmly, while the voice inside me snapped at the audacity. Whatever was or was not going on between me and Reed was none of this girl's damn business.Who even was she?The girl blinked like she’d only just realized how far she’d gone, and her expression softened slightly as she ran a hand through her tangled curls.“I’m Charlotte,” she said, sticking out her hand like that would fix the weird vibe she’d just dropped into my lap. I didn’t take the hand; I didn’t know where that had been. Furthermore, I did not go around shaking strangers' hands.Withdrawing her hand awkwardly, she sniffled, her eyes darting around as if she was trying to gather herself, and I watched her fingers tremble as they swept through her hair again, confirming what I had already suspected—she was on something.“I didn’t mean to come off rude,” she went on. "I just—I saw you and Reed ou
