It was a busy night at the club, the colorful lights flashing and the music vibrating in the air. I was about to leave, but I spotted Lídia and decided to go say goodbye. I approached and whispered in her ear:

—I’m heading home. Need a ride?

Lídia smiled and shook her head.

—No, girl. He’s taking me.

She gestured to the guy beside her. I looked at him, and he nodded slightly. I responded with a cold smile, which he didn’t seem to notice, and murmured to Lídia:

—If you need anything, call me, okay?

She nodded, so I grabbed my bag and walked away. I made my way out of the club toward my car. I unlocked the doors, got in, and turned on the radio to break the silence of the night. I took one last look at my phone, and seeing no messages, I sighed in relief. Finally, it was time to go home.

After parking, I walked straight inside and went to the office where my father was meeting with some guests. As soon as I entered and closed the door, all the men in the room—including my father—stood up and watched me.

—Good evening, gentlemen, I greeted, maintaining my composure.

I sat in a chair beside my father, and they followed suit, resuming their seats. The visitors included Mr. Smith, a middle-aged, very elegant man; Mr. Philips, who always looked at me with an uncomfortable intensity; and finally, Félix Brown, who was accompanied by his son, Dylan.

To Beck, Dylan was the classic “playboy” type—with his relentless charm and confident demeanor, which she wasn’t sure if she loved or hated. Tall and athletic, he carried himself like someone always ready for a conquest, which only made his personality more irritating to her. His perfectly styled brown hair only reinforced that image, and his brown eyes, which always seemed to sparkle with mischief, made it clear he knew exactly the effect he had.

Dylan had a striking presence, but his carefree and somewhat annoying attitude put Beck on edge.

I knew my father had always encouraged the idea of Dylan and me having something more serious. He’s a good man, responsible, but the truth is, I’ve never seen him as anything more than a friend. Our relationship is easy, light, with no demands. We understand each other and respect boundaries. I looked at him and smiled, and he returned the gesture.

My father then stood up, drawing everyone’s attention.

—I’ve received reliable information that someone is talking about taking down our family, the Riveras, he announced, his voice firm but with a note of concern.

There was a moment of tension in the room, and Mr. Félix was the first to react.

—Let them come. Our unity won’t be shaken by any threat. And if I find out who’s behind this, that person will regret it.

Mr. Philips, who always remained silent, agreed with a stern nod. My father then picked up a sheet with some names written on it and began distributing them among those present.

—Here are the possible suspects, he said, handing a paper to each of us. —The Thomas, Collins, Gonzalez, Simmons, and finally, the Sanchez families.

I looked at the names and realized I didn’t recognize any of them. They were new and enigmatic figures to me, which only deepened the mystery. My father continued:

—I want everyone to investigate these families. Each of you will take a name and investigate however you can. I won’t accept mistakes.

After the command, everyone took a paper and began to leave. As I stood up to go, my father called me back.

—Beck, I also need your help to investigate. Use your contacts, he said, handing me an envelope.

He gave me a kiss on the cheek before returning to his serious demeanor. I left the office and went straight to my room, exhausted. As soon as I entered, the darkness was welcoming. I turned on the light and nearly jumped when I saw Dylan sitting on my bed.

—What are you doing in my room, Dylan? I asked, surprised.

He smiled, standing up and approaching me.

—I came to ease the longing.

He kissed me on the cheek, and I smiled as I stepped away to put my bag and the envelope on the table beside me. I kicked off my heels and left them on the floor, walking barefoot to the bathroom.

—Shouldn’t you be going home with your father? I asked from the bathroom as I turned on the shower.

Dylan approached the door, smiling.

—I told him I needed to talk to you about what your father asked of us. He didn’t mind.

I laughed as he watched me through the steam that was beginning to form.

—You lied to your father?

—Not exactly… We have urgent matters to discuss, don’t we?

I got out of the shower, wrapped in a towel, and approached him.

—What matters, Dylan? I asked, raising an eyebrow.

He pressed his lips to mine, picked me up, and carried me to the bed. We kissed intensely for a few moments until I pulled away and sat beside him.

—It was good to ease the longing, I commented, smiling.

Our relationship had always been like this—based on affection and respect, with no labels. He always knew the boundaries were the ones I set, and that was something that preserved our friendship.

He wrapped me in a tight hug.

—This is all crazy, isn’t it? These threats to your family…

—Threats are just words, Dylan. I’ll always be ready to defend what’s ours, I replied, determined.

—And so will I, Beck.

The sun was beginning to set when the sound of sirens and the voices around me started fading into distant echoes. Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion while I tried to keep Dylan awake, pressing my hands against the wound on his chest. Even through the pain, he kept looking at me with those stubborn eyes.Beck whispered, her voice trembling.— Please, Dylan… don’t leave me.Dylan forced a weak smile, placing his hand over mine.— Hey… don’t cry. I’m not going anywhere, Beck.My mother rushed closer, pale and trying to stay calm.— Mom, call the ambulance… and please, take Theo away from here. She nodded and led Theo away. Moments later, the sirens grew louder as the paramedics arrived and quickly prepared Dylan for the ambulance. I held his hand the entire way, refusing to let go.At the hospital, they rushed him straight into surgery. I stood outside the operating room frozen in place until Igor appeared with concern written all over his face.— Beck… what happened? His

The dinner at Dylan’s house had finally arrived, and Beck couldn’t hide how nervous she felt. It was an important moment—not only for her and Dylan, but for the entire family. Their engagement was still recent, and now they were finally going to share the news with her parents and with Theo. The moment they arrived, they were welcomed warmly. Beck’s mother, always perceptive, was the first to ask.— So what is this dinner about? Dylan was incredibly vague…Beck smiled, trying to hide her anxiety.— You’ll all see soon enough. Her mother raised an eyebrow.— Well then, let’s go inside and find out.Inside the living room, Dylan’s father, Mr. Félix, was already talking with Theo as if they had known each other for years. Their connection was immediate, and Beck felt some of the tension leave her shoulders. When dinner was served, everyone settled around the table. Heavy rain poured down while Beck supervised the training of the new soldiers, not caring about the weather at all. The sharp sound of the whistle echoed through the field, and everyone immediately got into position. Beck watched every movement closely. At one point, she stepped toward one of the soldiers and studied his aim.She took hold of the gun and fired straight into the center of the target.— Control your breathing! The soldier nodded, adjusting his stance. A second later, the result was perfect. Beck watched with satisfaction.Suddenly, she saw Dylan walking toward her with an umbrella, trying to keep her from getting even more soaked.— Are you trying to get sick?— A little rain isn’t going to take me down.He smiled.— Are you sure about that?He glanced around before leaning in to kiss her, a risky move in that environment.— Shouldn’t you be in a meeting right now?He shrugged.— I should be, but with the storm my flight got delayed. So… are you done here yet?— And why

Night finally arrived, and while I was getting ready for Lídia’s party, the silence in the house felt like an invitation for chaos. Theo was with Bryan tonight, so the house was all mine. I slipped into a fitted dress, put on high heels that made me feel confident, and pinned my hair into a loose bun. While I applied my lipstick, I caught Dylan’s reflection in the mirror. He was leaning against the doorway, watching me with a half smile.— Looking like that, I’m not letting you leave.I paused with the lipstick in my hand and looked at him through the mirror, arching an eyebrow.— Why?— Because you look beautiful.I finished getting ready, but before we could leave the room, Dylan cornered me in the hallway. The intensity in his eyes made my heart race.— Why don’t we stay home tonight? Just the two of us?I smiled and pulled lightly on the cord he always wore.— Because I promised I’d go. But we’ll have the whole night to ourselves afterward. He rolled his eyes, but took my hand as

As soon as Beck leaves with Theo, I rush inside the house. Restlessness consumes me, and my thoughts won’t stop circling around the lies and secrets surrounding my family. I search for my father through the whole house, but he isn’t in any of his usual places. When I glance out the window, I spot him in the garden—something rare.I walk over and speak without hesitation.— So you knew Bryan was a bastard?Benjamin, my father, lifts his eyes from the plants he had been tending, but he doesn’t look surprised.— Yes, I always knew — he answers calmly. — But I wasn’t going to interfere. His answer only makes my anger rise.— If my mother were still alive, she never would’ve let him do this!He turns to face me, his expression hard.— But she isn’t!His words hit me like a blade. Unable to control my frustration, I turn my back and leave. I get into my car and drive straight to Bryan’s house, blood boiling. When I arrive, loud music echoes through the property. We walked downstairs together, and Dylan took the box from my hands, carrying it to the car.The scent of dinner still lingered in the air when my father approached, eyeing the box curiously.— What are you taking with you, Beck?— Just a few things to decorate my room and keep you all a little closer to me.My mother smiled nostalgically as she stepped closer.— Beck, I used to love going into your room and looking at our framed pictures.— We’ll take another one soon. This time with the whole family. She hugged me tightly, and I felt the familiar comfort of a mother’s love.— I should get going now. Thank you for dinner, Mom.— What comforts me is knowing that now that you’ve left the hospital, we’ll see each other more often.I said goodbye to my father and Theo, who was already exhausted. Dylan, always helpful, carried my son upstairs to his room while I headed to mine. When I got there, I opened the box and took out the picture frames, setting them on the nightstand. I stared at

Beck had finally found a moment to relax in the break room. Sunk into the armchair, she took a deep breath, trying to release the tension from her shoulders.
