Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
Harry exchanged a glance with the new tenant, offered a few more awkward pleasantries to me, and then hurried away.

I curled up on the couch and scrolled through Darius' and Sonya's latest social media updates.

Right after landing, Darius and Sonya headed straight for that Mistland grill restaurant, the one featured in the viral video about their hefty, generous portions. They laughed happily and heartily on camera.

As for the accommodation they stayed in, it turned out to be the same guesthouse I'd mentioned in passing just a few days earlier.

So, it wasn't that they hadn't heard me. They simply hadn't cared to listen.

I hastily wiped away the moisture welling up in my eyes before hiding all of their social media posts. Then I got up to pack my things and get ready to move out.

Four days later, Darius called me.

"Rennie? Have you gotten off work yet? Sonya and I just landed back home. We bought some souvenirs for you. Wanna head over to the new place together? You said that you had something important to tell me, didn't you?"

I glanced out the window. It was absolutely pouring.

"Sure. But it's hard to get a cab in this torrential downpour. Why don't you just swing by and pick me up instead?"

A long silence followed on the other end of the line.

After a long pause, Sonya's timid voice finally came through.

"Rennie, can't you just take a cab to your new place instead? Darius is at my place now, cooking for me. If he has to go and pick you up, it'll mean a detour and getting stuck in traffic."

My tone immediately turned cold.

"Didn't he say that you guys just landed? Whatever. Then we'll just go another day."

I hung up on her right after that.

Not long after, I got a text message from Darius. He said, "Don't take your temper out on Sonya over such a small thing. I'm on my way to pick you up now."

His message made me burst out in laughter. I immediately replied, "Forget about it. It's also the first time I ever learned that you actually know how to cook. We'll just go some other time. I don't want to leave the house today."

He didn't reply.

Two hours later, my doorbell wouldn't stop ringing urgently. I heard Darius yelling my name outside.

I opened the door with a frown.

"Didn't you read the message I sent you? I don't want to leave the house today."

But Darius was already yanking me out the door, not caring about my protests. "Stop making a fuss. Sonya got an upset stomach on the plane, so I was just making her some chicken soup.

"I initially told her to stay at home to rest, but she insisted on coming along no matter what because she saw that you were angry. Talk to her. If not, she won't be able to get over her guilt."

I said nothing and shook his hand off, rubbing my reddened wrists. I grabbed my bag and followed him downstairs, heading straight for the backseat without even glancing at the front passenger seat, because I knew Sonya would be there anyway.

Just as expected, she was there. And when she saw that I didn't bother going to the front, she turned her head around to me and said awkwardly, "Sorry, Rennie. I'm really not feeling well, so I won't be getting out of this seat for now. I'm sorry you have to take the backseat."

I just hummed in reply.

When Darius saw how coldly I was responding, he turned around and glared at me, starting up the car while trying to ease up the tension.

"Rennie. Sonya only tagged along because she was worried that you were upset that we went on the trip together. She came to apologize to you. Aren't you going to say anything to her?"

What was I supposed to say? Did they usually have anything to say to me anyway?

I just leaned against the car window and replied nonchalantly, "I don't have anything to say."

Darius didn't know what to say next. Instead, he smiled awkwardly and started talking to Sonya about other things.

Yet as they kept chatting, the topic somehow drifted back to the time they'd spent together in Mistland.

"Remember when we tried to feed the pigeons at Quayside Beach, Darius?"

"Of course! How could I ever forget? The pigeons kept flocking around me, and I nearly fell into the water! And you also got dye all over me when we were doing the tie-dye craft!"

"And you still have the nerve to bring that up? You totally ruined my dress! I can't even wear it anymore thanks to you!"

They kept chatting and bickering back and forth, but it all felt like needles pricking my heart.

After a while, Darius got tired and finally seemed to realize that I, his fiancée, was still sitting in the backseat.

"Rennie, let's all go to Bodeya when we have the chance next time. Didn't you say that you'd been feeling tired at work lately and wanted to take a break? When that time comes—"

I didn't want to listen to him anymore, so I cut him off and said, "We're here. Let's get off."

Sonya clutched the envelope and suddenly threw her arms around me, weeping so hard it was actually quite heart-wrenching. It was as though she was pouring out all of the grievances and regrets that she had bottled up over the past few years. She buried her face against my shoulder and murmured over and over again in a trembling voice, "I'm sorry… I'm so, so sorry, Rennie…"It wasn't until after I went through so much that I finally realized just how good you'd been to me… Can't we please just—""There's no 'we' anymore," I said, calmly interrupting her. "There's just 'you' and 'me' now."I gently but firmly pushed her off and looked at her tear-stained, makeup-streaked face. Her eyes held no more pride."I wish you a happy marriage. But that's about it," I said. "I won't be staying for the reception because I've got other matters to attend to. Please excuse me."With that, I let go of her and turned to leave.I'd only taken a few steps when a familiar voice called out from behin

I didn't tell a soul where I was headed next.I went to Bodeya, the place closest to the sky. There, I witnessed the most devout acts of prostration and gazed upon the towering, snow-capped mountains in the distance. I also listened to the deep, resonant, sacred sounds of prayer wheels spinning beneath the walls of the Lama Palace.Suddenly, it struck me. The jealousy and betrayal that had once weighed so heavily on my mind were, after all, as insignificant as specks of dust.I finally understood, and I knew what I had to do when I eventually returned.I didn't go back to my hometown to settle into the stable, predictable life Mom and Dad hoped I would. Instead, I revamped my resume and set my sights on cities much further away.…Two years later, I ran into a former colleague, Andy Richards, at an industry exhibition. After exchanging some pleasantries, we started talking about our current work, and he suddenly brought up Sonya's name."Do you remember that complaint from a su

Sonya continued screaming, "I've been crushed under your thumb for 18 years. 18 years, Rennie Carlson! Don't I have the right to strive for something for myself even just once?"She pointed a finger in my face, her tears mingling with the spittle on her face."You've always had it good and easy! You've always been better than me in every way! But I'm not doing too badly myself now! I have a respectable job. I'm a manager. I know how to dress well, and I can even recognize all the luxury brands in your home, even the ones I couldn't pronounce anymore!"Who gave you the right to be liked by everyone? Why does everyone always like you instead of me?"I didn't bother sparing her any dignity anymore when I saw her like this. I shot back, "You still don't get it, do you? It's because you're an ungrateful bitch. You're an ingrate who bites the hand that feeds you."Sonya was left speechless as my words choked her.I had no intention of stopping there. I continued, "You've been cling

I never imagined Darius and Sonya would track me all the way to Mistland. They must have asked Mom and Dad where I was. When I opened the courtyard gate and saw Darius and Sonya standing there, I let out a weary sigh, then gestured for them to sit at the wooden table under the veranda.Darius spoke up first."I'm sorry, Rennie. I know I've done many things in the past that upset you, and I've spent time reflecting on that."As he spoke, he pulled a key from his pants pocket and slid it across the wooden table toward me."I got this key back from Sonya. It's yours now. I'll keep a proper distance from her from now on. I won't cross the line with her anymore."Please just take the key. Once this trip is over, we'll go back, register our marriage, and hold the wedding. How does that sound?"He then turned slightly and nudged Sonya with his elbow. She'd remained silent the entire time, a grim expression on her face. She clearly hadn't wanted to come all the way to Mistland to find m

After landing in Mistland, I turned airplane mode on my phone back off, and my screen lit up as a flood of notifications hit me.Darius' name was at the very top. He'd sent me dozens of messages in a row."Did you move out? Why didn't you tell me? Where did you go?""What was that post you made on your social media? My parents even asked me about it!""Rennie Carlson! Pick up your phone!"I didn't reply to any of his text messages.Meanwhile, Darius was chatting away with Sonya on a group call in our three-person chat group, urging me to join and even starting a conversation with me, which was extremely rare."Rennie, my mom's asking us for a wedding date. Sonya was just asking us about it too. Why aren't you saying anything?"Sonya added in a tearful voice, "I'm sorry, Rennie. It's all my fault. You're both getting married soon, and yet you're still arguing because of me. But it's just a job. The worst that could happen is that I just find myself another one if this doesn't wo

A sharp, aching tightness gripped me in the chest. I let out a soft, bitter laugh. Then, I tossed the gift box into the trash can right under Darius' and Sonya's noses."I don't want the gift. I don't want the key anymore."I cast them another glance and said, "And I also don't want both of you anymore either."Then I grabbed my bag and turned to leave.Darius seemingly reached his breaking point and chased after me, yelling, "What is it that you want now, Rennie Carlson? Is it not enough that we're begging you like this?"I turned back and gave him a cold, detached look. I was too disheartened to say another word, so I simply walked away.…Ever since that day, Darius and Sonya never spoke to me again. They stayed as close as ever, chatting in private and getting along like a house on fire. That was how we stopped talking and gave each other the silent treatment. Finally, the day came for me to resign. After finishing the last of the paperwork at the office, I headed downst
