VENUS

My stomach lurched the moment Gerald’s lips curved into that wicked, knowing smile. His words hung in the air like a noose tightening around my throat.

“Oh, how rude of me. Congratulations on the twins, by the way. You were not nice not telling me, but I’ll be the bigger person.”

The air fled my lungs. My blood went cold, my knees weakened. Twins. He knew. God, he knew. The knowledge in his voice was deliberate, a weapon. My hands flew instinctively to my stomach, as if I could shield the fragile lives inside me from his gaze, from his malice.

Gerald’s eyes followed the motion, gleaming with cruel delight. He laughed, sharp and jagged, the sound ricocheting off the damp concrete walls.

“You are such a whore,” he spat, venom dripping from every syllable. “You’re carrying his babies. Aaron’s. Of all men, his. Do you think I’d ever let that stand? Do you think I’d let you create something with him when you were meant to belong to me?”

VENUS The world spun sideways when Aaron moved. One second Gerald’s smirk split the room like a knife; the next, Aaron was on him—a dark blur of violence tearing through the shadows. Their bodies collided with a sound that didn’t belong to men but to war itself: bone against bone, rage against rot. The crash echoed through the warehouse, rattling the single dangling bulb until its weak glow trembled across the filth-stained walls. I tried to push myself up, palms slipping against the cold concrete, but my body screamed in protest. My stomach throbbed, hot waves of pain pulsing outward like someone had lit a fire inside me. Still, I forced myself upright, pressing my back to a rusting pillar for support. My arms instinctively curled protectively over my belly, a shield that felt pitifully small against the storm unfolding before me. Aaron was relentless. A wolf unleashed. He drove Gerald back with a savagery that shook the air, fists finding flesh again and again. Each strike was mo

AARON The phone in my fist might as well have been bone. Fragile. Breakable. Mocking me with the silence of its dead tracker. I stared at the black screen until my vision blurred, until all I saw was her face flicker across the dark glass like a ghost. “Sir?” One of my men hovered at the edge of the alley, voice careful, like I was a grenade with the pin already pulled. I lifted my head, jaw flexing. “Activate the contingency.” He blinked. “The—” “The ring,” I snapped, cutting him off before the tremor of hesitation drove me over the edge. “I want the signal now.” For a breath, the alley stilled. Then he barked into his comm, words spilling rapid-fire to the tech team. Somewhere in the city, servers hummed to life, lines of code unfurling like veins, reaching for the one lifeline I had left. The ring. I’d had it designed to be beautiful—something worthy of her hand, her yes—but inside, I’d slipped a safeguard. Not because I didn’t trust her. Because I didn’t trust the world. I

VENUS The figure outside didn’t speak. Didn’t need to. His presence was enough—solid, hulking and silent as a blade. The driver’s door opened, the creak slicing through the cold night air, and then rough hands clamped onto my arm. “Move.” The voice wasn’t Gerald’s. Too flat, too utilitarian. A soldier. My body resisted, instinct pulling back like a tether snapping tight. But resistance earned me nothing—only a brutal yank forward that pitched me out of the car and into the dark. Gravel bit into my shoes, the night air clawing at my lungs. I dug my heels in. “Where are you taking me?” No answer. Only force. The man’s grip bruised my arm as he dragged me toward the warehouse, its doors yawning like the gates of something infernal. Rust screamed when the metal swung open, the echo slamming into me like a warning bell. Inside, the air was colder. Damp. It smelled of mildew and old machinery, of oil that had seeped too deep into the concrete to ever leave. Shadows pooled

VENUS The line went dead silent for a beat, and then: “Hello again, my dearest Venus.” My chest locked. The voice was smooth, like honey poured over glass, sharp underneath. Gerald. My fingers tightened around the phone. “What do you want?” A soft chuckle slid down the line, sending ice through my veins. “Straight to the point. You sound just like him when you’re cornered. But I don’t want anything complicated. Just… a trade.” Every hair on my arms stood up. “A trade?” “I have Sabine.” His words were delivered like a casual fact, as though he were talking about holding a glass of wine. “She’s alive, for now. She’ll stay that way if you listen.” “Please—” The word scraped out of me before I could stop it. “Ah, ah, ah.” His interruption was sharp, slicing. “Don’t beg me yet, Venus. Save it for when you need it.” I could hear my pulse in my ears. My throat ached with unshed tears, but I forced myself to stay still, to listen. A click, then the sharp hiss of static,

AARON The footage was a noose tightening around my throat. Sabine, caught mid-run. Her hair swinging, lungs pulling in air like she was finally free and then shadows closed in. A black van slid into frame. Doors opened. Three men, masked, efficient, not a word wasted. They hit her like wolves. She fought—God, she fought—but they were faster. Stronger. One had a needle. Her body stiffened, then went slack. They dragged her inside, slammed the door, and the tires screamed as they vanished. I didn’t breathe until the last frame froze. “Play it again,” I said. Connor’s hand hesitated over the mouse. “Aaron—” “Play it again.” He obeyed. The sequence looped. Each second carved deeper into me, every movement studied, memorized. Their posture, their gloves, the way they moved like they’d rehearsed. Not random. Not opportunistic. A plan. And I knew the signature. Gerald. The same patience. The same precision. The same shadow on my life I had failed to erase the first time. Connor r
