Maribel “Belle” Westbrook adjusts the strap of her tote bag as she follows Maisie Langford through the grand marble corridor of the Sterling Executive Institute. The immense scale of the corporate compound looms over her, a maze of frosted glass panels, gilded pillars, and security checkpoints that separate the three main corporate divisions.

“There are four separate executive residence wings based on your operational tier,” Maisie says, her tone crisp and practical as she pauses at the foot of the brass staircase. “The Senior Executives take up the penthouse levels, obviously. It is the smallest cohort, but they control the entire board.”

Belle pauses, turning to face her former classmate. Over the past twenty minutes, the initial shock of her arrival has settled into a dull, heavy reality. She is an unranked graduate intern—a bottom-tier recruit with no corporate backing, no investment portfolio, and no leverage inside the Sterling Group Properties.

“I will walk you down to the Graduate Intern Wing once you finish your processing,” Maisie adds, her sharp features softening into a rare, genuine expression of sympathy. “I know how brutal the drop is when you realize where you land.”

“Thank you, Maisie,” Belle says quietly, her chest tightening.

She turns and pushes open the heavy frosted glass doors leading into the main administrative suite.

Dr. Lenora Fairchild looks up from her sleek glass desk, her fingers hovering over a digital tablet. “Ah, Miss Westbrook. I was just about to send a corporate associate to track you down.”

Belle walks slowly across the polished floor and takes a seat in the leather chair opposite the desk. “Am I really being assigned to the basic intern tier, Dr. Fairchild?”

Dr. Fairchild sighs, leaning back in her high-backed leather chair and pulling a standard grey ID badge from her top drawer. She slides it across the pristine surface. “The metrics are non-negotiable, Maribel. You arrived with zero financial portfolio and no active legacy equity.”

Belle stares at the dull grey card bearing her name. “You knew this before you summoned me here? If I have no corporate value, why bring me to the Institute at all?”

“You still carry the Westbrook name,” Dr. Fairchild replies evenly, folding her hands over her desk. “Your family lineage holds historical significance, even if your father stripped the liquidity from your holding accounts. The Sterling Corporate District is currently short on junior administrative staff. You will serve the firm in an entry-level capacity.”

A cold bitter laugh catches in Belle’s throat. “So I am here to fill a seat and run errands for senior heirs.”

“In high-stakes corporate environments, every asset has a designated function,” Dr. Fairchild says, her tone devoid of warmth. “You will undergo basic corporate training, assist with administrative audits, and fulfill your contract. The alternative is immediate financial liquidation of your mother’s remaining estate in Westbrook Heights.”

Belle clenches her hands into tight fists in her lap. Her mother’s safety and home depend entirely on her compliance. “And what about my own plans? I wanted to pursue my degree in supply chain management and build a life away from this district.”

“You will receive an education here that far exceeds any standard university,” Dr. Fairchild counters coldly. “If you have concerns regarding your assignment, you may submit a formal appeal to the executive board.”

To Keaton Waverly, Belle thinks, her stomach twisting into a tight knot. The boy who used to play in her backyard is now the presiding executive heir over Waverly Global Industries. The thought of standing before him in a cheap intern badge, begging for a status upgrade, makes her blood run cold.

“I understand,” Belle says softly, standing up and taking the grey badge from the desk.

“Report to the lower levels for your orientation file,” Dr. Fairchild instructs, already turning her attention back to her tablet. “The board members are currently holding a private strategy session in the lower executive vault.”

Belle steps back out into the lobby, where Maisie is pacing near the waiting area benches.

“You got the grey tag, didn’t you?” Maisie asks, eyeing the badge in Belle’s hand.

“Yes,” Belle admits. “Maisie… where are the top-tier executives holding their board meeting right now?”

Maisie stops pacing, her eyes widening in disbelief. “In the Silvercrest Private Vault beneath the lower concourse. It is restricted access. Why?”

“I need to see Keaton,” Belle says, her voice firmer than she feels. “I need to look him in the eye and understand what is happening.”

“Are you completely out of your mind, Westbrook?” Maisie steps in front of her, placing a hand on Belle’s shoulder to block her path. “You cannot just storm into a high-level acquisition meeting. Keaton Waverly is not your childhood friend anymore. He is surrounded by ruthless corporate associates who will have security remove you from the building before you can even open your mouth.”

Belle looks past Maisie toward the private elevators down the hall. “I am going down there.”

Maisie throws her hands up in frustration. “Fine! Destroy yourself on your first day. See if I care.” She flops down onto the waiting bench. “I will be right here when security drags you back up.”

Belle does not wait. She marches toward the quiet service stairwell at the end of the corridor, pushing open the heavy brass door marked Executive Access Only.

The concrete stairs wind down into the cool, fluorescent-lit depths of the building. With every step she takes, the ambient noise of the upper campus fades, replaced by the deep hum of server banks and climate-control systems.

As she reaches the subterranean level, raised voices echoing down the hallway bring her to a sudden halt.

“The Waverly Group is pushing the margin boundaries too far!” a harsh male voice barks from behind a set of double steel doors. “If we agree to these terms, the Sterling Group loses its primary oversight on the merger!”

Belle’s heart hammers against her ribs. She steps up to the door, her fingers trembling as she reaches for the heavy chrome handle. She hesitates for a split second, taking a deep breath to steady the nervous heat flushing through her skin, before pressing the lever down and pushing the door inward.

The heated shouting inside instantly vanishes into total, suffocating silence.

Twelve high-ranking corporate heirs turned toward the entrance, their sharp, impeccably tailored suits gleaming under the recessed lighting. Maps, financial ledgers, and live market displays cover the massive conference table in the center of the room.

Standing at the head of the table, leaning forward with both palms flat on the dark wood, is Keaton Waverly.

“What in the world is an intern doing in a closed board session?” a blonde woman in a custom black blazer spat, her dark eyes flashing with immediate venom.

Belle freezes under the weight of a dozen cold, elite stares. She looks directly at Keaton. He has grown taller, his broad shoulders filling out his bespoke navy suit, his jawline hard and defined.

“Keaton?” Belle breathes, her voice barely carrying across the vast room.

Keaton’s icy blue eyes lock onto hers. For a fraction of a second, the lethal, unyielding posture he holds falters, replaced by raw, shock.

“This meeting is suspended,” Keaton commands, his voice deep, gravelly, and commanding unquestioned authority.

“Keaton, we are in the middle of reviewing the Sterling contract!” the blonde woman snaps, slamming her pen onto the mahogany surface.

Keaton ignores her entirely. He rounds the long conference table with fast, powerful strides, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Belle. Before anyone else can speak, his large hand wraps firmly around her wrist, turning her around and pulling her out into the cold stone corridor.

The heavy steel door slams shut behind them, cutting off the furious mutters of the board members inside.

Keaton releases her wrist, but he does not step back. He looms over her, his tall frame blocking out the fluorescent light from the hall.

“Belle?” he murmurs, his voice rough as his eyes scan her face, taking in her wide eyes, her flush cheeks, and the cheap grey intern badge pinned to her chest.

Belle stumbles back an inch, her heel catching against the concrete baseboard. “I… I thought you wouldn't recognize me.”

Keaton closes the gap instantly, placing one heavy hand on the stone wall beside her head, trapping her in his immediate space. The rich scent of expensive cedarwood and clean musk rolls off his skin, overwhelming her senses and making her breath catch in her throat.

“Not recognize you?” he asks, a dark, breathless chuckle escaping his lips. His blue eyes drop to her mouth before snapping back to her eyes. “I could pick you out in a room of ten thousand people, Maribel. What are you doing here? Why are you wearing an intern tag?”

Belle swallows hard, her heart pounding violently against her ribs as she looks up into his intense gaze. “My family lost everything, Keaton. The Sterling Group brought me here to liquidate my father's remaining debts.”

Keaton’s jaw clenches hard, a dangerous flare of anger darkening his expression. He steps closer, his chest almost brushing against hers, his possessive heat wrapping around her in the cold basement hallway. “They brought you here as collateral?”

Before Belle can answer, the heavy steel door behind them flies open with a sharp metallic bang.

Sloane Everhart steps out into the hallway, her sharp heels clicking against the concrete floor. She wears a crisp white executive blouse with a crimson silk sash draped across her shoulder—the mark of a senior partner. Her dark eyes narrow in immediate disgust as she looks at Belle, then shift to Keaton’s hand resting against the wall beside Belle’s head.

“You left a multi-million dollar strategy session for an unranked intern, Keaton?” Sloane asks, her tone dripping with ice as she crosses her arms over her chest. “The Waverly board is waiting for your final vote.”

Keaton does not step away from Belle. He turns his head slowly, his expression hardening into pure, ruthless steel as he glares at Sloane. “I told you to wait inside, Sloane.”

“I am your designated corporate fiancee and the primary liaison for the Sterling merger,” Sloane says, stepping forward and placing a sharp, manicured hand directly onto Keaton’s arm. “I do not wait inside while my future husband handles entry-level staff.”

Belle feels as though all the air has been violently kicked out of her lungs. Her head spins, the cold concrete wall behind her the only thing keeping her upright as Sloane’s words echo through her mind.

Keaton’s eyes snap back to Belle, catching the sudden, agonizing betrayal written across her face. He reaches out toward her, his fingers brushing the fabric of her sleeve. “Belle, wait—”

“Is it true?” Belle whispers, her voice shaking as she stares at his hand, then up at his tight, conflicted face. “You are marrying into the Sterling Group?”

Sloane sneers, sliding her hand down Keaton’s sleeve until her fingers entwine with his. She holds up her left hand, catching the cold halogen light of the hallway.

Gleaming brightly on her ring finger is a flawless, three-carat canary diamond ring, bearing the official crest of the Waverly family.

“You shouldn't be walking through the corporate district alone at this hour,” he says over his shoulder.“I think I’m perfectly capable of walking to my own room without an executive escort,” she responds, looking around at the quiet gardens.“Worried Keaton won't be around to handle your problems for you?” he asks, a bitter edge in his tone.Maribel huffs, picking up her pace until she is walking right beside him. “I can take care of my own problems.”“Who taught you how to navigate high-stakes corporate conflict?” he asks abruptly.Maddox towers over her, his presence utterly dominant. Maribel wraps her arms tightly around herself, exhaling a quiet breath. “My mother and father. But mostly my mother, Colette. She was always paranoid about the Sterling family squeezing us out of our family business.” She stops short, swallowing the hard lump in her throat. She shouldn't have revealed something so personal to the man who holds her family’s debt.“I see,” Maddox says softly, casting a

Maribel Westbrook smoothing the hem of her dark navy trousers while looking in the mirror, attempting to calm her racing pulse after the sudden shock of the transferred medical debt notice. Before she can fully gather her thoughts, Maisie Langford and Tessa Whitmore barge into her modest suite in the Executive Residence Wing, dumping a mountain of corporate evening wear across the bed.“I really don't think I should go to this networking reception, guys,” Maribel says, turning around to face her two friends with a deep frown.Tessa, who is already aggressively sorting through a rack of tailored blazers and silk blouses, stops and scowls at her. “You are absolutely going! Who knows when entry-level interns like us will ever get access to the main floor of the Sterling Estate again? I know exactly how we’re going to style your hair.”“It’s going to be brilliant, Belle. You need to live a little,” Maisie adds, tossing a set of silver earrings onto the vanity.“It’s precisely because I wa

Maribel Westbrook adjusts the stiff collar of her grey intern jacket, trying to ignore the pulsing headache that has been hammering behind her eyes since yesterday. The high-stakes exchange between Keaton Waverly and Maddox Sterling in the administrative vaults still echoes through her mind. Maddox’s cold assertion that he would never mess with an entry-level candidate without legacy standing should have felt like a relief. It should have pushed her to blend back into the background. Instead, it felt like a sharp, calculated dismissal from the man who controls the entire financial ecosystem of the Sterling Executive Institute. She couldn't stop wondering about Keaton’s sudden leverage. When Keaton confronted Maddox, he had spoken about holding an structural advantage over the executive board. What did he mean? And what was the upcoming annual board review everyone kept discussing in hushed, nervous tones? She found her answers the moment she stepped into the central corporate pavilion

“Who cares how sharp she is?” another associate scoffs. “She has zero family backing and no trust fund. It’s not like anyone in the upper tier is going to offer her a real junior partnership.”“Yeah, who wants a partner without capital? Imagine trying to introduce a scholarship girl to the board at the annual gala.”A hot wave of shame burns through Maribel’s chest, turning her cheeks a fiery red. She grips the edge of the laundry basket so hard her knuckles turn white. Is that all she is to these people? A temporary amusement? A charity case destined to be discarded the moment the semester ends? She leaves the basket outside the lounge door and quickly steps out into the cool evening air of the central courtyard, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She refuses to let them fall. She didn't work her entire life to reach the Sterling Executive Institute just to be written off as a corporate footnote.“Hey, what’s going on with you?” Maisie Langford asks, catching up to her near the edg

Maddox Sterling standing directly over the fallen corporate associate ought to have triggered at least a shred of pity in Maribel Westbrook’s chest, but her attention remained entirely pinned on the way the low-level graduate intern cowered near Keaton Waverly’s shoulder. Maribel’s pulse hammered violently against her ribs. The girl had dismantled the attacker’s corporate posture with terrifying efficiency, using his own aggressive forward momentum against him in front of the entire central foyer. It was the second time in twenty-four hours she had pulled off a maneuver like that, and because the victim happened to be a rising analyst from the Sterling Group's primary division, Maddox could not simply walk away from the mess.“You know the protocol here, Keaton,” Maddox says, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register that cuts straight through the lingering tension in the marble corridor.Keaton takes a subtle step back, shielding Maribel further with his tailored jacket. “She

“Intern!” a sharp voice calls out behind her.Maribel turns slowly to face Sloane, who has followed her out to the courtyard steps. “What is it now?”“You are fortunate I am not filing a formal compliance report against you for being in the executive wing.”“I did not even ask to—”“Save it,” Sloane cuts her off, stepping down to match her level. “Consider this your final warning. Stay away from Keaton, stay away from the executive dining room, and stay away from the board suites. You are a graduate intern here on a conditional grant. Remember your place, or I will ensure the registrar terminates your placement personally.”Maribel nods, wanting nothing more than to put distance between them. “Fine. It won't happen again.”Sloane glares at her, her posture rigid with cold satisfaction. “It better not.”She turns on her heel and glides back into the warmth of the executive building. Maribel quickens her pace, heading straight for the graduate intern quarters before the outer gates are
