CHAPTER TWO: THE CONTRACT AT THE DOORSTEP

Louis’s eyes snapped open to the same cracked ceiling and for one blissful second, his mind was quiet.

Then yesterday crashed back in like a wave of cold water…the weirdo at the door, the bodyguards, those crazy words.

‘My husband.’, “who the hell says that to someone you are seeing for the first time?”

He groaned, sitting up. “That guy’s definitely crazy,” he muttered to the empty room, rubbing his face.

He’d slammed the door on that face. That… annoyingly perfect face.

“Stop it” , he told himself. You’re not into guys except for that drunk kissing you had with a classmate in high school, nothing else connects you to liking guys”

But facts were facts. The man…Lorenzo..was built like some kind of god from an old painting.

Tall enough to make anyone feel small, shoulders that looked like they could carry the world, and eyes so blue they were almost scary.

It was just an observation like noticing a really expensive car. It didn’t mean you wanted to buy it.

“Get a grip, Carter,” he told himself, shuffling to his tiny kitchen.

The only thing brewing was instant coffee. “Rich lunatic. Probably picks up guys from infomercials for fun.”

He shook his head hard, trying to shake the memory of that stare…so intense it felt like being touched. It didn’t work.

Pulling back the blinds, he peeked out. No fancy cars or men in suits.

Just the same dirty sidewalk and Mrs. Gable yelling at her cat. Maybe he’d imagined the whole thing. Stress could do weird stuff to your brain.

*****

The hospital smell hit him the second he walked in…that mix of cleaning stuff and quiet sadness that always turned his stomach.

But when he pushed open the door to Chloe’s room, a new smell cut through. Something sweet and flowery.

A huge bouquet of white lilies sat on her windowsill.

They looked ridiculously fancy, like they belonged in a movie, not in this pale green room.

“Hey, superstar,” he said, forcing his voice to sound light. The sight of her, small in the big bed, made his chest hurt.

“Louis!” Her face lit up, and she held out her thin arms. “You came!”

He hugged her gently, afraid she might break. She felt like a little bird.

“Missed you too, kiddo.”

She pointed a weak finger at the flowers. “A nurse said a nice man sent them. You got a secret admirer, Lou?”

His heart did a strange squeeze. “Nah, probably just a nice nurse,” he lied, kissing her forehead. She was too warm.

“You look tired,” she said, her small hand patting his cheek. “More than normal tired.”

“Just busy. Got a… new job thing. Stuff’s looking up.” The lie tasted bitter.

She gave him a look that was too wise for her twelve years. “I love you, you know? Even when you lie to make me feel better.”

That almost broke him. His throat got tight. “I’m sorry I’m not here more. I’m sorry… about everything.”

“Stop,” she whispered. “You’re my brother. You’re enough.”

As he was leaving, Dr. Evans almost bumped into him. Louis braced himself for the talk about bills.

“Mr. Carter! Good timing,” the doctor said, smiling. “We’re very optimistic about Chloe’s new treatment plan. It’s top-tier. With this level of care, her chances are much better.”

Louis blinked. “New plan? Doctor, I… I’m behind on last month’s bill.”

Dr. Evans looked confused, checking his chart. “The account is settled. More than settled…it’s pre-paid for a full VIP care package. I assumed you’d arranged for some… assistance?”

Louis’s blood went cold. He didn’t wait to hear more. He practically ran to the billing office.

A young woman looked up, bored. “Can I help you?”

“My sister, Chloe Carter. I need to see her account.”

She typed, then her eyebrows went up. She turned the screen. Louis felt the floor tilt.

Balance: $0.00

Credit: $85,000.00

Service: VIP Oncology Suite (1 Month Pre-Paid)

“Who paid this?” His voice came out thin.

She shrugged. “Says here the wire came from Volterra Holdings. That’s it.”

Volterra.

The name from his doorstep. The man with the glacier eyes.

This wasn’t help. It was a leash and someone had just clipped it to his collar.

*****

The walk home felt longer than ever. The gift in his stomach felt heavier than all the debt.

‘How do you give back $85,000? You don’t. You’re owned.’

She was waiting. The severe woman from last night leaned against his door like she owned the hallway.

Two huge, quiet men stood behind her, making the cheap lighting look even sadder.

“You,” Louis said, stopping a few feet away. “What do you want now?”

She let out a sigh, the kind you give a misbehaving child. “I’m Anya, Mr. Carter. My employer, Lorenzo Volterra, has, to be blunt, lost his mind. He took an emergency flight from Milan. He canceled three major mergers. For you. He is… fixated.”

“I don’t know him! Tell him to take his money back!”, Louis knew he was definitely bluffing when he says that.

She ignored him, pulling a sleek tablet from her bag. “He understands your situation. The debt, your sister’s illness and the… despair. He can fix it.”

She shoved the tablet at him. On it was a document titled MATRIMONIAL CONTRACT – TERMS: 12 MONTHS.

“In return for your companionship and a public marriage, Mr. Volterra will erase all your debts, guarantee your sister the best medical care in the world, and provide you with a generous settlement upon completion.”

“Provided you don’t fall in love with him first, of course.” She said the last part like it was a joke with no punchline.

Louis stared at the screen. The words blurred. “You’re all insane. I’m not marrying a stranger!”

“You are drowning,” she said, her voice flat. “This is not a life raft. It is a yacht. Your sister’s new medication costs twelve thousand dollars per dose. She received it this morning. It is the only thing keeping the pain at bay. Be smart.”

Rage, hot and sudden, flashed through him. “You had no right! You can’t just buy people!”

“We already have,” she said calmly. “The question is, will you sign and make this pleasant, or will he obtain you through… messier methods? Mr. Volterra does not lose. He collects things and he has decided to collect you.”

Louis shoved the tablet back so hard she almost dropped it. “Get off my doorstep!”

He slammed the door, locking it. His heart wasn’t just pounding; it was trying to escape his ribs. This wasn’t fear of being poor anymore. This was the terror of being caught.

*****

The knock came an hour later. Hard and fast like they were trying to break down the door.

His stomach dropped to his feet. Anya. The “messier methods.”

Hands shaking, he opened it.

A fist filled his whole world. White-hot pain exploded in his jaw. He flew backward, crashing over the coffee table with wood splintered under him.

“Uncle Vinnie says you’re avoidin’ us, pretty boy.” Marco’s voice was a sneer above him. “Real bad move.”

Bruno kicked his small bookshelf. It toppled with a crash. Before Louis could get air back in his lungs, Marco hauled him up by his shirt and slammed him into the wall.

“Where’s our seventy-five hundred?” Marco’s breath was in his face.

“I don’t… have it,” Louis gasped, tasting blood.

“Then we take it out of your hide,” Marco snarled. “And then we go have a chat with little Chloe. See how much she’s worth.”

Panic, pure and electric, shot through Louis. He thrashed, kicking out. His foot connected with a lamp, it shattered in a burst of noise and ceramic.

It was hopeless. They were too big and he was too tired.

BANG.

The sound was so loud it felt like the apartment shook. The front door flew open, smashing into the wall so hard the knob dug into the drywall.

Everyone froze.

In the doorway stood Lorenzo Volterra.

He was holding a bouquet of deep red roses. He wore a different suit…dark gray, perfect…and his face was a cold, hard mask.

But his eyes… his eyes went straight to Louis, bleeding and pinned against the wall.

Something in those blue depths shifted, darkened, and caught fire.

Bruno recovered first, a nasty grin spreading across his face. “Well, well. Louis got himself a sugar daddy. You here to pay his debt?”

Lorenzo didn’t even glance at him. His gaze was locked on Louis. When he spoke, his voice was low, quiet, and thick with an accent that wrapped around each word.

“You…” he said, the word dropping into the silence like a stone. “You touch what is mine?”

He snapped his fingers.

Two of his bodyguards moved faster than Louis’s eyes could follow.

Guns appeared in their hands…not waved around, but held with a still, professional deadliness, aimed right between Marco and Bruno’s eyes.

A third guard stepped smoothly in front of Louis, a human wall.

The room went dead silent. You could hear the drip of the kitchen faucet.

Lorenzo stepped inside. He let the beautiful roses fall to the dirty floor without a second look.

He walked past the men with guns like they were part of the decor, his eyes never, ever leaving Louis’s face.

He stopped right in front of them. Marco’s grip on Louis’s shirt tightened, but he was trembling.

Lorenzo reached out. He didn’t hit Marco. He just closed his large, elegant hand around Marco’s thick wrist.

Then, with a terrifying, effortless strength, he peeled Marco’s fingers away, one by one, until Louis slumped free.

Lorenzo looked at him…really looked. At the blood on his lip, the bruise blooming on his cheekbone. A muscle in Lorenzo’s perfect jaw jumped.

He leaned in close, so close Louis could smell his expensive, clean scent.

His voice was a rough, possessive whisper meant only for Louis’s ears, each word struggling through the accent but landing with absolute certainty.

“No one,” he breathed, the heat of his words ghosting over Louis’s sore skin. “Hurts my husband.”

CHAPTER NINETY SEVEN: BARGAIN Louis found Lorenzo in the study, staring out the window. His wheelchair was positioned near the desk, a stack of papers untouched beside him. Louis walked in, a small smile on his face. "How do you feel today?" Lorenzo didn't turn. "The same." Louis crossed to him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I picked out our clothes for the meeting. Something sharp. Something that says 'we're still in charge.'" He paused. "I chose an excellent tie for you. Dark blue. The one that matches your eyes." Lorenzo finally looked at him. His expression was unreadable. "Louis. I need you to do something for me and to understand me, my love”, Lorenzo said softly. Louis's smile faltered. "What?” Lorenzo reached for his hand, holding it tightly. "You don't have to be at the shareholders meeting with me." Louis blinked. "What? What are you even saying,my love?” "I've made plans. Chapter Ninety Six: Trust That Terrifies The bar was empty…dimly lit, smelling of stale beer and old secrets. The kind of place that didn't ask questions and didn't remember faces. Louis had chosen it for exactly that reason. Theo was already there, sprawled across a table like he owned it, his legs dangling off the edge, that infuriating smile plastered on his face. He looked like a golden retriever who had just been told he was a good boy. It was almost disarming. Almost. Louis stood a few feet away, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. His mind was already working…cataloging exits, noting the distance between them, calculating how fast he could reach the door if this went wrong. ‘He's Giuseppe's right hand. He's dangerous. He's unpredictable. Don't forget that.’ "I didn't think you were going to come," Theo said, tilting his head. His voice was light, almost playful

Lorenzo was in the chair behind him, his walking stick resting against the armrest, his eyes fixed on Louis's back. "He offered to help," Louis said quietly. "Theo. He said he could be useful. He said he's tired of being a tool." Lorenzo's voice was flat. "Don't you even think about it…baby” Louis turned to face him. "I'm not saying I trust him. I'm saying there might be something we can use." "Use?" Lorenzo's eyes narrowed. "You want to use a man who kills people for Giuseppe? A man who you mentioned calls him father?" Louis took a step closer. "He called Giuseppe father. But he also said he's just a tool to him. That kind of relationship can sour. It can crack. And if it does…” "It won't." Lorenzo's voice was sharp. "You don't understand. I know men like Theo. I've been around them my whole life. They don't turn…. don't betray. They follow until

  • Contracted: The Billionaire’s Husband From The Commercial   WITHOUT ME

Chapter Ninety Four: Without Me The room was tall and luxurious, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city like a kingdom Lorenzo had built but couldn't yet walk through. A treadmill sat in the center, and Lorenzo moved on it slowly, his steps measured, his jaw tight with concentration. His feet had been getting better…he could feel the strength returning, the muscles remembering what they were meant to do. But he trained in secret, only when Louis was there to watch, only when the world wasn't watching him struggle. Louis sat on the edge of the bed, glasses perched on his nose. The screen exposure these days had caught up with him…late nights reading reports, scrolling through intelligence, piecing together Giuseppe's moves. He looked older, more tired, but there was a softness in his eyes when he watched Lorenzo move. "You should at least have your trainer here," Louis said, his voice light. "Someone professional. Someone who knows what they're doing." Lorenzo shook

Chapter Ninety Three: The Price of Loyalty Louis woke up tied to a wooden chair, his head pounding from whatever they had injected him with. The room was dim, lit by a single lamp that cast long shadows across the walls. Across from him sat Giuseppe, calm and composed, a glass of wine in his hand like he was hosting a dinner party. Behind Louis, a man whistled softly….a cheerful, almost jaunty tune that felt entirely out of place. Giuseppe sighed. "Theo, would you please stop hovering?" Theo…the head guard….grinned, stepping into Louis's line of sight. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with a face that looked like it had been carved from stone. But his eyes sparkled with mischief, and his grin was infectious. "Sorry, boss," Theo said, twirling a knife between his fingers. "I just want to see how this plays out. He's got a reputation, this one. The model who stood up to the board. The husband who told you to go to hell. I'm a fan." Giuseppe's jaw tightened. "Theo." "Righ

Chapter Ninety Three: I’m Just Selfish The safe house was modest compared to the Volterra estates….plain walls, simple furniture, the kind of place that was meant to be invisible. Giuseppe sat across from Isabella, a glass of wine in his hand, studying her like she was a puzzle he was trying to solve. "Are you faring well?" Giuseppe asked, his voice soft. Isabella was quiet for a moment. She stared at her hands, her fingers thin and pale. "I don't know. Sometimes I don't remember where I am. Sometimes I think I'm still in that room." She looked up, her eyes hollow. "He kept me there for so long. I forgot what the sky looked like." Giuseppe's expression softened. He leaned forward, his voice gentle. "I've missed you so much, sister. You have no idea. What could I have done without you?or your love?” Isabella's lips curved. "You would have survived. You always have." He smiled. "I suppose." Then his tone shifted. The warmth faded. His eyes grew sharp, calculating. "But do
