(Gloria)

I took in a deep breath, gripping the leather strap of my bag as I stared up at the massive glass tower of Montclair Advertising. My very first day.

The weight of my mission pressed upon my shoulders. This wasn’t just a job, it was a game of survival, and the stakes were very high. Somehow, I need to walk out of here with a ring on my finger, given by none other than the CEO.

I walked inside, my heels clicking against the polished marble floors, trying to blend in with the sharp dressed employees who looked like they belonged in Forbes magazine.

I didn’t. But I definitelywould.

Before I could find my way to the HR office, a sharp voice cut through the air toward me.

“You. New girl.”

I turned to see a pretty woman in a fitted black dress and stiletto heels that looked capable of stabbing someone. Her sleek black hair was pinned into a perfect bun behind her head, her brown eyes cold and assessing.

“Follow me,” she ordered, already walking away.

I blinked. Wow, no introduction? No ‘Welcome to Montclair Advertising’? Just ‘follow me’?

I hurried after her. “And you are?”

She gave me a sideways glance like I was wasting her time. “Kate. The CEO’s personal assistant.”

Oh. Her.

The woman Eleanor had warned me about.

She led me through a set of towering double doors without knocking.

“Your new secretary is here,” she announced flatly.

I stepped inside after her, and froze.

No. Freaking. Way.

Sitting behind a massive desk, his sleeves rolled up and tie loosened, was him.

Gabriel Montclair.

The man whose drink I’d spilled all over his expensive suit that night at the club. The man who had promised to deal with me.

His piercing blue eyes lifted from his laptop and landed on me.

His face was unreadable. His expression? Devoid of amusement.

I forced a tight lipped smile. “Wow. Small world.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened. “You.”

Kate’s perfectly arched brow lifted in surprise. “You two know each other?”

Neither of us answered her, the air between us was thick with unspoken words. I straightened my shoulders. “We’ve met.”

“Briefly,” Gabriel said, his voice clipped.

Kate glanced between us, her eyes narrowing. “Huh.”

Gabriel shut his laptop and leaned back into his chair, his arms crossed. “So, you’re my new secretary.”

“Looks like it,” I said, lifting my chin.

His blue eyes glinted. “You planning to spill a drink on me here too?”

I gave him an innocent smile. “Depends. Are you planning to be an ass again?”

Kate sucked in a breath.

Gabriel’s gaze darkened, irritation clouding his features..

He leaned forward. “Watch your attitude, Williams. You work for me now.”

His voice was calm, but the warning was there, clear as day. I wanted to snap back, but Eleanor’s words rang in my head. Keep it professional, gain his trust.

I took in a deep breath. “Duly noted, sir.”

The corner of his mouth twitched like he knew I was forcing the politeness, but he let it slide.

“Kate will show you around,” he said, dismissing me with a wave of his hand.

Kate smirked at me. Yeah, she was going to make my life hell.

I followed her out of the office, biting my tongue. As soon as we reached my desk, she dropped a towering stack of papers in front of me.

“Photocopy all of these,” she said, her voice sugar sweet. “And don’t mess up.”

I stared at the pile. Seriously? This had to be some kind of punishment.

But I refused to let her see me sweat.

I forced a smile. “Of course.”

Kate walked off, and I carried the stack to the copy room.

I found the massive, hightech machine and started feeding in the papers, pressing the button.

The machine purred to life.

Then I noticed something weird.

The screen flashed: SENDING DOCUMENTS.

I frowned. Sending to where?

I pressed the cancel button. Too late.

A notification popped up: Documents forwarded.

No. No, no, no.

Panic surged through me as my throat tightened in fear.

“Hey, new girl,” a voice called from the doorway.

I turned to see a guy peeking in. “Did you just send a bunch of classified files to the IT department?”

My stomach dropped to the floor.

I swallowed hard. “Uh… possibly?”

The guy winced. “Yikes. They’re freaking out. You might wanna fix that.”

Fix it? My hands were sweaty, my heart pounded.

I hurried out of the room, nearly tripping over my own feet as I raced toward the IT department. The moment I stepped inside, a woman with thick glasses glared at me from behind a desk.

“Tell me you didn’t just forward confidential files,” she demanded.

I hesitated. “…I could tell you that.”

Her nostrils flared. “Do you have any idea what you just did?”

“Um. Not entirely?”

She exhaled sharply. “Those files contain sensitive information. If they end up in the wrong hands…”

A deep, dangerous voice interrupted her.

“What the hell is going on here?”

I froze.

Then slowly, I turned.

Gabriel Montclair stood in the doorway, his arms crossed, gaze like ice. My mouth went dry.

The IT woman immediately straightened. “Mr. Montclair, sir, there was a… situation.”

His piercing blue eyes locked onto mine.

“What. Did. You. Do?” he demanded.

I let out a nervous laugh. “Funny story…”

“Not in the mood for funny.” His voice was sharp. “Talk.”

I swallowed. “I may have… accidentally sent some files to the wrong department.”

His jaw clenched. “Which files?”

I hesitated, I didn’t know.

The IT woman answered for me. “Financial reports. Some project blueprints.”

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

I rushed to explain. “It was a mistake! The machine…”

“Don’t blame the machine,” he cut in coldly. “This is your fault.”

I bit my lip. “I can fix it.”

“Can you?” His voice was pure ice.

Before I could answer, the door swung open.

Kate strutted in, her gaze sweeping over the tense scene before settling on Gabriel. “Is there a problem?”

Gabriel didn’t hesitate. “Fire her.”

What?

My stomach dropped again, lower.

Kate smirked, looking like Christmas had come early for her. “With pleasure.”

Oh no. No, no, no.

I panicked, my mind racing. Eleanor had warned me to hold on to this job. And if I got fired on day one, I’d lose everything.

Without thinking, I gasped dramatically and stumbled backward, reaching out for nothing.

Gasps echoed around me as I collapsed onto the floor.

Someone shrieked. “Oh my God!”

A few people rushed forward. Someone else whispered, “Did she just… did she faint?”

Kate groaned. “You have got to be kidding me.”

I kept my eyes closed, willing myself to look as lifeless as possible.

The silence stretched.

Then, Gabriel’s deep voice cut through the chaos.

“Oh, for God’s sake.”

And just like that, I knew, he wasn’t buying it. But I wasn’t about to open my eyes and confirm it. I stayed perfectly still.

Let’s see him fire an unconscious woman.

(Gloria)“Breathe,” Elena whispered, tucking a stray curl behind my ear.I tried but the air caught in my throat, thick and dry. My lungs were working, but it didn’t feel like breathing, it felt like drowning. The dress fit like a custom made trap.Silk, delicate and stupidly expensive, clunging to every inch of me like it had a personal grudge. White, backless, tight around the ribs, I looked like the kind of dreamy bride people wrote poems about. But underneath? I felt like a prisoner. We stood just behind a pillar out of sight, but I could already hear the rustle of guests, the low hum of whispers, and the click-click-click of paparazzi cameras fighting for a shot. “You ready?” Elena asked, her fingers brushing mine.I nodded, but the truth was, I wanted to run, like, just bolt. But my heels stayed rooted to the grass, like even they knew escape was pointless.“You look like you’re about to jump the hedge,” she said. “If you do, I’m not wearing flats under this dress for nothing. (Gloria)Elena sinks into the chair beside me, picking up the halfempty wine bottle on the table. “So… everything’s unraveling fast, huh?”I let the rim of the glass rest on my lips before I answer. “Apocalyptic.”She winces. “Sorry.”I shrug stiffly. “Don’t be. Eleanor Montclair doesn’t back down. I’ll give her that.”There’s a beat of silence, then Elena says quietly, “You admire her?”I scoff. “No. Maybe. Hell, I don’t even know. She’s scary but effective. She sent me this ridiculous form to fill out, and when I hesitated, she hit me with so much legal jargon, I thought I’d be arrested for lying about my blood type.”Elena lets out a low whistle. “She really did her daughter-in-law homework.”“Thoroughly,” I mutter, setting the glass down harder than I mean to. “Shame her son isn’t going along without a fight”Elena shifts. “He was angry…”“He was humiliated,” I cut in. “And now he thinks marrying me is the worst decision of his life.”Elena clears her throat. “Jordan hasn’t called

(Gabriel)The moment I step out of the car back home, flashes go off like fireworks from the cameras shoved into my face, with reporters barking questions I have zero interest in answering.“Mr. Montclair, is it true you fired your secretary?”“Was the relationship ever real?”“Did she seduce you for the money?”I keep walking with my sunglasses on. Let them feast on the scraps because I’m here for the queen of manipulation herself.I push open the grand double doors and make my way inside without a word to the housekeepers who bow and scurry out of my way. Up the marble stairs, past the lifeless portraits of smiling men I never cared to resemble, and straight to her favorite room, the tea room. The door’s already open of course. She probably wants this to feel casual and warm. My mother sits by the window elegantly like she’s been waiting for me to arrive. She smiles like I’m her darling boy coming home from war.“Gabriel,” she says softly, patting the velvet cushion beside her. “Co

(Gabriel) The saltwater clings to my skin as I step out of the ocean, feeling the waves pull away from me with each step forward and i take a deep breath to enjoy the tropical air. Hawaii’s warm breeze is supposed to wash away the anger, frustration, and chaos of my life, but it doesn’t. It doesn’t do a damn thing to numb the knot in my stomach or the rage simmering just beneath the surface of my skin.I make my way to the beach dragging my board behind me, the sound of the ocean drowned out by the rush in my ears. The soft sand shifts under my feet as I approach the edge of the beach, and that’s when I see them. Two women. Tall, tanned, and wearing almost nothing. They’re eyeing me up like I’m their next meal. I don’t blame them, no doubt the waves have done wonders for my physique. The blonde is the first to speak. “Nice ride out there,” she says with flirtation in her voice.I glance over to them disinterestedly. I’m not in the mood for small talk. But then I notice the brunette.

(Gloria)My phone rings and I almost drop it. Eleanor Montclair. Her name stares back at me like it’s been branded on my screen. I freeze, every one of my muscles tightening. Suddenly, the idea of crying over a documentary feels like a warm up for the real horror show to come .Because if there’s one person who’s probably angrier than Gabriel right now, it’s his mother.I imagine her standing in a designer robe, swirling a glass of wine like a villain from a movie, already drafting the legal papers to sue me into poverty. I picture myself back on Elena’s couch begging for space, struggling to afford groceries, and eating cheap ramen in bulk while I try to pay back…The phone buzzes again in my palm demanding an answer.Shit. Okay.I swipe. “Hello?”No greeting and no hesitation.“I’ll pay it back,” I blurt. “Please. Just give me a payment plan or something. I… I know the contract’s over, but I swear I’ll find a way. (Gloria)I stare at the door hoping it might swing back open like Gabriel forgot something, maybe his sanity, maybe his heart. Maybe the part of him that didn’t just threaten me like a mafia boss in a three piece suit. But no. It stays shut. And I’m just standing there, jaw slack and completely, spectacularly, ruined.“Welp,” I whisper, blinking. “I think that went well.”A tiny, pitiful laugh bubbles out of me but it dies as fast as it came.I take a step forward, my knees buckle. Okay. That’s fine. That’s totally okay. I’ve been through worse.…Haven’t I?Then I collapse onto the floor in a heap, one arm flopped over my stomach like I’ve just been fatally wounded in battle. Maybe I have. The battle of the heart. The war of love. The massacre of dignity. And then it happens, the sobs.Real ones, loud and messy. Not those pretty movie tears. Nope. This is the kind of crying that makes your face puff up like a marshmallow and your nose run like a broken faucet.I bury my face in my han
