Chapter 2: The Devil’s Office

The rain in Country A fell in dense, grey sheets, slicking the glass windows of the yellow taxi as it crawled through the morning traffic.

Emaline Gonzalez stared out at the towering skyscrapers, her hands clutched tightly in her lap. Her knuckles were white. She hadn't slept a single minute on the six-hour flight. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Carter’s arrogant smirk and heard the terrifying number echoing in her mind: Sixty million dollars.

She pulled out her phone and re-read the cryptic email for the hundredth time.

Blackwood Tower. 8:00 AM sharp.

The taxi pulled up to the curb, and Emaline looked up.

Blackwood Tower rose into the overcast sky like a monolith of dark steel and tinted glass. It was intimidating, flawless, and suffocating. It screamed wealth—the kind of ancient, unreachable power that could crush a family like hers without a second thought.

Emaline swallowed the lump in her throat, stepped out of the cab, and marched through the massive revolving glass doors.

The lobby was marble-floored and silent, despite the dozens of sharply dressed employees moving briskly toward the elevator banks. Emaline walked up to the sleek security desk, where a receptionist in a tailored black blazer gave her a polite, practiced smile.

“Good morning. Welcome to Blackwood International Group. How may I assist you?”

“I have an appointment,” Emaline said, keeping her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I was told to come here at eight o’clock.”

The receptionist clicked her mouse. “Your name, please?”

“Emaline Gonzalez.”

The receptionist paused. Her eyes flicked up to Emaline, subtle surprise breaking her professional mask. She quickly typed something into her keyboard.

“Miss Gonzalez. Yes. Executive suite, top floor. Express Elevator B.” She handed Emaline a gold-trimmed visitor pass. “Please scan this at the barrier.”

“Thank you.”

Emaline took the pass and walked toward the private elevators. As the doors slid shut and the high-speed lift began its smooth, silent ascent to the eightieth floor, her heart hammered against her ribs.

Who had sent that email? Was it a sick prank orchestrated by Carter to mock her? Or was there truly someone in this building willing to throw her a lifeline?

Ding.

The doors parted, revealing a vast, open-plan executive floor. Floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the foggy city skyline. Sleek black leather furniture, abstract art, and polished mahogany lined the hallways.

Standing near a massive mahogany desk at the far end of the hallway was a tall man in a dark suit, holding a leather folder.

Emaline recognized him instantly. He was the man who had stepped up behind the cold stranger at the airport.

The man turned as her heels clicked against the polished floor. He offered a polite, measured nod. “Miss Gonzalez. I am Liam Carter, Executive Vice President and chief legal counsel for Blackwood International.”

“Mr. Carter,” Emaline said, stepping forward. “Did you send me that email?”

“I authorized it on behalf of my employer,” Liam replied smoothly, gesturing toward a set of massive, heavy oak double doors at the end of the hall. “He is waiting for you.”

Emaline glanced at the closed doors. “Your employer… Mr. Blackwood?”

“Yes.” Liam walked beside her, his expression unreadable. “Before you step inside, Miss Gonzalez, I must give you a fair warning. Mr. Blackwood does not tolerate inefficiency, emotional outbursts, or lies. You are here because your current financial catastrophe aligns with a very specific problem he requires solved.”

“Aligned?” Emaline frowned. “He knows about my debt?”

“Mr. Blackwood knows everything that happens in the business sector of this continent,” Liam said calmly. He reached out and pushed the heavy oak doors open. “Go on in.”

Emaline took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and stepped into the office.

The room was enormous. A wall of glass provided a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire city. But Emaline’s eyes were immediately drawn to the massive black granite desk positioned in the center of the room.

Behind it stood a man with his back turned to her, staring out at the rain-slicked city below. He wore a perfectly fitted three-piece navy suit, his broad shoulders filling out the fabric effortlessly.

The door clicked shut behind her. The silence in the room was absolute, heavy with an oppressive, suffocating tension.

“You’re two minutes late,” a voice rumbled.

It was a deep, gravelly baritone that sent a cold shiver straight down Emaline’s spine.

She froze.

Slowly, the man turned around.

Emaline’s breath hitched in her throat.

The razor-sharp jawline. The harsh, perfectly sculpted features. And those icy, terrifying grey eyes that stared at her with complete, unbothered detachment.

It was him.

The man from the airport. The cold stranger whose expensive suit she had ruined with hot coffee.

“You…” Emaline gasped before she could stop herself.

Aiden Blackwood didn't blink. He casually rested one hand in his trouser pocket while his other hand held a crystal glass of water. He looked at her not with surprise, but with cold, calculating scrutiny.

“Sit, Miss Gonzalez,” Aiden commanded smoothly, pointing toward the high-backed leather chair across from his desk.

Emaline forced her legs to move. She didn't sit. Instead, she gripped the back of the chair, her mind reeling as the pieces clicked together.

“You’re Aiden Blackwood,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “The CEO.”

“I am.” Aiden walked slowly around his desk, his posture rigid and commanding. He set his glass down on the polished granite. “And you are Emaline Gonzalez. Daughter of Hector Gonzalez. Former head of marketing at Vance Media. And currently owing sixty-two point four million dollars to offshore creditors after your ex-fiancé stripped your family’s assets.”

Hearing her nightmare recited so casually by a total stranger made Emaline’s chest tighten with anger.

“If you already know everything, then why am I here?” Emaline demanded, lifting her chin. “Did you bring me to Country A just to mock me? Or do you enjoy watching people drown?”

A dark, dangerous glint flashed in Aiden’s grey eyes. Most people quivered when he spoke. His previous four personal assistants had broken into tears within their first week. Yet this woman, standing in a damp coat with ruined shoes and a mountain of debt, was glaring at him with defiance.

“I don't waste time mocking irrelevance, Miss Gonzalez,” Aiden said, his tone icy and precise. He reached down, picked up a thick document bound in dark leather, and tossed it across the desk. It landed right in front of her. “I am giving you an exit.”

Emaline looked down at the gold lettering embossed on the cover.

SPECIAL EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT & EXCLUSIVE PERSONAL CONTRACT.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Your survival,” Aiden replied cleanly. He leaned against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms. “Carter Vance is attempting to hostilely acquire three of my subsidiary tech firms. He believes he is clever. He believes he can use stolen capital—your family's capital to buy out my board members.”

Aiden’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice.

“I do not lose to arrogant pests like Carter Vance,” Aiden continued, his voice dropping an octave. “I am going to crush his empire, destroy his liquidity, and ensure he spends the rest of his life in a federal facility. But to do it quickly, I need someone on the inside of his historical records. Someone who knows his shell companies, his passwords, and his legal weaknesses.”

Emaline felt a spark of dark heat ignite in her chest. “I know all of them. I managed his personal archives for two years.”

“I know you did,” Aiden said. “Which makes you remarkably useful.”

He stepped closer, his imposing height looming over her. The faint scent of expensive cologne, cedarwood, and rain washed over her.

“Here are my terms,” Aiden stated, listing them off with terrifying efficiency. “You will sign a one-year exclusive contract as my 24/7 Senior Personal Assistant. You will live in the executive suite of my residence to ensure absolute security. You will accompany me to every high-society function, every gala, and every board meeting as my trusted confidante.”

Emaline frowned. “And in return?”

“In return,” Aiden leaned in, his icy eyes locking onto hers, “Blackwood International will immediately absorb your sixty-two million dollar debt. My legal team will secure your father’s hospital care in the finest private medical facility in Country A. And when Carter Vance is ruined, I will hand you fifty percent of his liquidated assets.”

Emaline’s heart slammed against her ribs. It was an impossible offer. It was a golden ticket out of hell.

“Why?” Emaline asked suspiciously, searching his emotionless face. “A billionaire doesn't spend sixty million dollars out of kindness. What’s the real catch, Mr. Blackwood?”

A harsh, bitter smile touched the corner of Aiden’s lips—a smile devoid of any warmth.

“The catch, Miss Gonzalez, is that for the next three hundred and sixty-five days, your life belongs entirely to me. You will work when I say work. You will stand where I say stand. You will obey every directive without question. You will be my weapon against Vance, and in public, you will play the role of the devoted woman who chose me over him.”

He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a sleek black fountain pen, and uncapped it. He held it out to her.

“Sign the contract, Emaline. Save your family, get your revenge, and sell your soul to me.”

Emaline looked from the gleaming pen to the thick contract, and then up into the cold, ruthless eyes of Aiden Blackwood.

She knew she was stepping into a cage. She knew this man was dangerous, unfeeling, and completely devoid of mercy.

But as she remembered her father lying in a hospital bed and Carter’s mocking laugh, her hand reached out.

She took the pen.

“Where do I sign?” Emaline said softly.

Aiden’s eyes darkened with a sudden, intense satisfaction. “Page twenty-four. At the bottom.”

Emaline turned to the last page, pressed the nib of the pen to the crisp paper, and signed her name in clear, bold script.

The moment she placed the final dot, Aiden snatched the document back. He didn't check the signature. He simply closed the folder and looked at her.

“Welcome to Blackwood International, Miss Gonzalez,” Aiden said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He checked his platinum wristwatch. “Your first assignment begins now. Go to the third floor, scrub the coffee stain out of my spare suit, and have my schedule ready in ten minutes.”

Emaline blinked. “What?”

“You are my assistant,” Aiden said smoothly, turning his back on her as he walked toward his desk. “And you still owe me for the shirt you ruined at the airport. Ten minutes, Emaline. Don't be late.”

Emaline stared at his broad back, her jaw tightening. The cold CEO had just bought her life—and her war had officially begun.
