Chapter 13

Shadows of the Past

Marcus stared at the old photograph until his eyes burned. Judith’s face—younger, softer, terrified—looked back at him from seven years ago. The night everything shattered.

He ran a hand over his face, the DNA results still glowing on his laptop screen. No biological match. The words refused to settle. Neither Dan nor Ethan was Lily’s father.

Which meant only one impossible thing.

Marcus stood abruptly, knocking over a glass of whiskey he hadn’t touched. The liqui

  • Contracted to the wrong twin    The first night

Chapter 61: The First NightJudith woke to the sound of Lily laughing. She opened her eyes and stared at the unfamiliar ceiling for a moment before remembering where she was.Oops! London. She stared at the new flat, the yellow room down the hall and smiled slightly. For the first time in a long time, waking up somewhere unfamiliar did not make her feel like she needed to run.She reached for her phone. It was 7:30pmThere were messages from Sarah, two from her mother's hospital, one from Elena, and one from Ethan.Coffee?Judith looked at the message for a moment. Then another one appeared.Lily says breakfast is required immediately. Apparently I am responsible.Judith laughed quietly. She got out of bed.By the time she reached the kitchen, Ethan was already there. He was standing at the counter making toast while Lily sat on one of the chairs wearing her pajamas and Mr. Bear beside her.“You are late,” Lily announced.Judith looked at her. “Am I?”“Yes.”“What time did breakfast s

Chapter 60:HomeHer mother picked up on the first ring.“You are back,” her mother said.“Yes,” Judith said. “We got back about an hour ago.”“How is Lily.”“She has already claimed her bedroom,” Judith said. “She chose the one with the yellow cover.”Her mother made a warm sound. “Of course she did.” A pause. “And you. How are you really.”Judith sat down on the edge of the bed in the bigger room. The one Elena had said had good light in the morning. She looked at the window. The street outside. The tops of the plane trees moving slightly in the wind.“I am good Mum,” she said. “Not pretending good. Actually good.”Her mother was quiet for a moment. “I am glad,” she said. “I have been waiting a long time to hear you say that and mean it.”Judith smiled. “I know.”“When are you coming to see me,” her mother said.“Tomorrow,” Judith said. “I will bring Lily. She has a drawing for you. She drew you with yellow hair.”Her mother laughed. “Yellow hair.”“She said yellow is a happy colour.

  • Contracted to the wrong twin    The Road Back

Chapter 59:The Road BackLondon appeared slowly.First the roads got wider and busier. Then the fields disappeared and buildings started filling the gaps between them. Then the city was just there around them the way it always was. Loud and full and completely indifferent to everything that had happened in the last few days.Lily watched it all come back through the window. She had been quiet for most of the journey. Not sad quiet. Just thinking quiet. She did that sometimes. Went somewhere inside herself for a while without telling anyone where she was going. Judith had learned a long time ago not to pull her out of it. She always came back on her own.She came back now.“Are we nearly there,” she said.“Nearly,” Judith said.“Where are we going,” Lily said.Judith looked at Ethan in the front seat. He turned slightly.“We sorted something last night,” he said to Judith. “Elena found a place. A flat. Quiet street. Near your mother’s hospital.” He paused. “I had her arrange it this mo

  • Contracted to the wrong twin    One last Go

Chapter 58:One Last GoJudith woke up before her alarm. She lay there listening to the house. It was quiet the way it always was out here. No traffic. No city sounds. Just birds starting up outside and the occasional sound of the wind in the trees. She picked up her phone.Six fifty. She put it back down and looked at the ceiling.Today they were going back. She had told Ethan last night and he had agreed and it was the right thing. She knew it was the right thing. But lying here in this small room with the countryside outside the window and Grace downstairs and Lily sleeping peacefully down the hall she felt the pull of it. Of staying just a little longer in a place where nothing could reach them. She got up anyway.Grace was in the kitchen.Judith sat down and Grace put tea in front of her and sat down across from her which she did not always do in the mornings. She only sat when she had something to say.Judith waited.Grace wrapped her hands around her cup. “You are leaving today,

  • Contracted to the wrong twin    The worm in the garden

Chapter 57:The Worm in the GardenJudith was washing Lily’s hands at the kitchen sink when her phone rang again. She dried Lily’s hands quickly and picked it up. It was Robert’s lawyer. She answered and listened and said very little because he did most of the talking. He told her that Cassel had been formally charged that afternoon. Not just questioned. Charged. The conspiracy charge relating to Gerald Thompson was confirmed and on record and was not going away. She said thank you and ended the call and stood there at the sink for a moment with the phone in her hand.Lily was back at the table telling Ethan something about the worm in the garden and whether worms had families and whether the worm’s family knew where it was. Ethan was listening to every word of this and answering seriously like it was the most important conversation he had had all day.Judith watched them for a moment. Then she went and sat down.Ethan looked at her face. “What happened.”“Cassel has been formally char

  • Contracted to the wrong twin    Lunch

Chapter 56:LunchGrace made soup.Thick and warm and the kind that filled the kitchen with a smell that made everything feel slower and safer. She put it on the table with bread and everyone sat down without being asked.Lily climbed onto her chair and looked at the soup carefully.“What kind is it,” she asked.“Tomato,” Grace said.Lily thought about this. “Is it good.”“You tell me,” Grace said.Lily picked up her spoon and tried it. Her face settled into something satisfied.“It is good,” she said.“I know,” Grace said.Judith ate and looked around the table. Ethan on one side. Lily opposite her with Mr. Bear propped against the bread basket. Grace at the end. The rain completely gone now and the garden outside bright and wet and catching the light. It was a quiet lunch. Not the kind of quiet that meant something was wrong. The kind that meant everyone was fed and warm and there was nothing that needed saying right at this moment.Lily broke it eventually.“Can I go on the swing no
