Meanwhile, at Damian’s family estate, Clara was seated comfortably beside Damian’s mother, playing her part to perfection. She dabbed at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, her voice trembling just right as she said, “I’m just worried about Damian. He’s… distracted lately. And that girl, Emery… I don’t think she understands him. She’s too weak, too simple for someone like him.”

Damian’s mother, regal and sharp-eyed, nodded with approval. “You’ve always understood our family, Clara. I see the way you carry yourself. You’re poised. Proper. Not… fragile.”

Clara lowered her gaze demurely. “I only want what’s best for him. I know how much this family’s legacy matters. I’d never stand in the way of that.”

Damian’s mother reached over, squeezing Clara’s hand warmly. “You’ll make a fine wife for him.”

Damian stood a few feet away, hearing their words but saying nothing. Something inside him flickered—guilt, doubt, maybe even anger—but he crushed it down, refusing to confront it. It was easier

That night, Damian sat in the back of his car, a glass of whiskey in his hand. His head leaned against the cool leather, his eyes hollow.Clara sat beside him, her hand resting delicately on her stomach. She looked the part of a glowing mother-to-be. But inside, Damian’s soul was empty. He hadn’t touched Clara. He didn’t believe her. Yet everywhere he turned, his mother’s voice and the weight of duty pressed down on him.He downed the whiskey in one swallow, his throat burning. His mind, however, saw only Emery. Her laughter. Her touch. The way she’d looked at him with fire and tenderness. His chest ached. He pressed a fist against it, but nothing eased the hollow gnawing inside.Clara leaned her head on his shoulder, smiling at the cameras outside. Damian didn’t move. His eyes were cold, staring out the window, silently screaming a name he could never say aloud.Emery.---Back in her room, Emery lay curled on her bed, her hand resting gently against her stomach. Her tears had dried

For a moment, Damian didn’t breathe. Then he shot up from his chair, his hand slamming against the desk so hard the whiskey glass toppled, shattering to the floor.“Pregnant?” His voice roared through the room. “Don’t you dare—don’t you fucking dare stand there and tell me that lie!”Clara flinched at his outburst, but she didn’t back away. She let the tears fall, her body trembling. “It’s true, Damian. That night… at the club. We were together. You don’t remember because you were drunk, but...”“Shut up!” His fist crashed against the desk again, the veins in his neck bulging with fury. “I didn’t touch you! I couldn’t have. You’re lying, Clara, and you know it!”He stormed toward her, towering, his eyes blazing with such intensity that her knees weakened. He wanted to believe this was some twisted joke. But Clara only crumbled further, sinking into the nearest chair as sobs wracked her frame.“I would never lie about something like this,” she whispered, her voice quivering perfectly.

The morning was unusually heavy, the kind that pressed itself against Emery’s chest and refused to let her breathe freely. She sat on the edge of her bed, one hand pressed against her temple, the other wrapped around her middle as another wave of nausea passed through her. It had been weeks of this—weakness, dizziness, the constant sickness at odd hours of the day and every time, she had insisted it was just a fever, or maybe exhaustion. Nothing serious. Nothing worth worrying about. But her mother, who had been watching her daughter closely, knew better. A fever did not linger this long. Exhaustion did not make her faint in the middle of the kitchen yesterday.“Emery,” her mother’s firm voice called from the doorway, soft yet unyielding. “Get dressed. We’re going to the hospital.”Emery lifted her head, her eyes wide with alarm. “Hospital? No, Mama, it’s not necessary. I just need rest. That’s all.”Her mother stepped inside, her brows furrowed, her hands on her hips. “Rest? Emery, f

The pictures followed. Clara in her silk dress, holding onto Damian. Damian’s unfocused eyes, his hand limp against her waist. The shot of them entering the suite. A bold caption in the corner:“Passion Behind Closed Doors.”The phone slid from Emery’s hands, hitting the tiled floor with a dull thud. Her mother looked up, concern in her voice. “Emery? What is it?”Emery forced a smile, shaking her head. “Nothing, Mama. Just… spam.” Her voice cracked on the last word, betraying her. She turned back to the pot, stirring as if her life depended on it.But inside, everything was breaking.******Later that night, after Ethan had been slept on the bed and her mother had retired early, Emery sat at the edge of her mattress with the phone in her hand. Her thumb hovered over Damian’s contact. She typed.“Why? Was everything a lie?”Delete. She typed again.“I thought I meant something to you.”Delete.Tears blurred her vision. She slammed the phone down, clutching her head. In the small crack

Clara’s eyes followed him as the door slammed. For a moment, her mask slipped—her lips twisted into a smile of triumph. He was still fighting her, but she had won a piece of ground last night. She had something she could use.And she would.Later that morning, Clara sat in the vast parlor of Damian’s family mansion, sipping tea with Damian’s mother. Her voice trembled as she spoke, her eyes brimming.“I shouldn’t even be saying this,” Clara whispered, lowering her gaze. “But Damian… he let me in. After months of shutting me out, he finally… he finally needed me.” She dabbed at her eyes with a handkerchief. “We spent the night together. I love him so much, Mrs. Knight. And I think—no, I know—he’s starting to see I’m the one who belongs by his side.”Damian’s mother beamed, clasping Clara’s hand. “Finally. Finally, he’s come to his senses.
