Chapter Seventy

Aria

His hands were still on my arms when I looked up.

Rhett. Of all the people I could have collided with in that corridor, it had to be him.

He hadn’t changed much. He still had the same sharp eyes, same unreadable half-smirk that always felt like he knew something I didn’t, but there was something else now. His edges were harder and his posture was a bit warier.

His grip loosened slowly, but he didn’t step back.

“Well, well,” he drawled, gaze sweeping over me in open assessm

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   110-We're not done yet

Chapter One Hundred and TenAriaThe kiss wasn't a reconciliation; it was a collision. My fingers were buried so deep in the fine silk of his shirt that I heard the threads groan. I wasn't just kissing him, I was trying to devour the arrogance right out of his mouth. The anger from the garden, the humiliation of Adeline’s smirks, and the sheer, exhausting weight of our contract all poured into the way I moved against him, and worse? He wasn't even complaining. He seemed to want it more than anything else in the world.Zane let out a guttural, dark sound, a growl that vibrated through my teeth, and he didn't just take the lead, he hijacked the room.In one fluid, violent motion, his hands dived under my thighs and he hoisted me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist instinctively, my heels digging into the small of his back.He didn't carry me to the bed. Instead, he slammed me back against the heavy oak door we’d just walked through. The wood rattled in its frame, the vibration rattli

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   109-You kissed me again

Chapter One Hundred and NineAriaThe walk back was unbearable, not because Zane said anything, but because he didn’t.He walked beside me in complete silence, calm and composed like he hadn’t just detonated half the social order in the garden with one kiss. Meanwhile, every single step I took felt too loud in my own head.Everyone saw that. The noblewomen, the guards and even Adeline.God.My jaw tightened harder as we turned down the quieter corridor leading toward our rooms. The farther we got from the garden, the worse it became somehow, because now there was space for the reality of it to settle.Rumors were already spreading.By tonight, people would be whispering about it in every hallway. By morning, they’d be dissecting every glance, every interaction, every second of what happened. And Adeline…My stomach twisted sharply. She wasn’t going to let this go. A tiny part of me just knew she was going to use this against me.The moment we stepped inside the room, I turned on him i

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   108-You kissed me

Chapter One Hundred and EightAriaThe entire garden went silent immediately. Not quiet, but silent, like the kind that hit all at once, heavy and stunned, swallowing every sound around it.My breath caught somewhere in my throat as Zane kissed me, one hand firm against my waist, the other brushing lightly against my jaw like this was natural, intentional, planned, like he hadn’t just detonated the entire garden.Heat rushed through me instantly, sharp and overwhelming, not soft, not pleasant, but confusing and hot and infuriating all at once.Because this wasn’t just a kiss,it was a statement. A public one at that too, and somehow that made it worse. My fingers curled tightly against his chest for one brief second before I shoved at him hard enough to force space between us.“What the hell was that?” I snapped immediately and the silence somehow deepened.Behind me, I heard one of the noblewomen suck in a quiet breath, while another looked seconds away from fainting.Good. Let them.Z

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   107-Shunned

Chapter One Hundred and SevenAriaBy the third guard rotation, I was ready to lose my mind. I sat rigidly on the stone bench in the garden, staring at the fountain ahead of me while two guards lingered several feet behind like badly placed statues. They weren't even trying to be discreet or subtle. Instead, they stood behind me, watching, following and reporting me like I was some spoilt child who'd taken an extra piece of candy even after being told not to.My jaw tightened as I crossed one leg over the other, trying and failing to ignore the weight of their presence pressing against the back of my neck.Zane had actually done it.The realization still irritated me more than I wanted to admit. When he’d given me that ultimatum in the corridor, I thought it was another one of his control tactics. A threat meant to corner me into backing down, apparently not.Apparently, he’d meant every word and I'd been stupid enough to think otherwise.Fuck.The thought was beyond infuriating, soI

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   106-Bad influence, Strict methods

Chapter One Hundred and SixZane“Step away.” I repeated the words again, even though I doubted it did too much. I didn’t raise my voice,I didn’t need to, because the words landed clean and cold, cutting straight through whatever had been building in that room. Kieran froze where he stood, his hand still hovering too close to the restraints for my liking. For a second, no one moved, then slowly, deliberately, I stepped forward, placing myself between them.Kieran’s gaze snapped to me, something sharp flickering there. There was a little bit of guilt, but what shone out more was resistance.Of course.“What are you doing?” he asked, his voice tight. “What did you just do?”I didn’t look at him immediately. My attention stayed on the chains, on the space between him and her, on the fact that he’d gotten this close, too close. If I had stayed outside for even a minute, then I didn't even want to think about what would have happened.“Stepping in,” I said finally, my tone even. “And stopp

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   105-Maybe Aria was right

Chapter One Hundred and FiveZaneThe report was useless. I read it once, then again and again, but nothing changed. They were the same words, the same empty conclusions and the same careful phrasing that meant absolutely nothing. My grip tightened on the paper before I let it fall onto the desk.“They moved before we got there.” I read the line out loud this time, my voice flat. “No trace. No witnesses.”Maybe reading it out loud would change the variables, or help me admit that I wasn't hallucinating. Or perhaps it would give the soldiers a chance to correct my mistake.I counted to ten, but silence answered me. No one answered or tried to counter me, and that was when I realized that I was cooked.Slowly, I lifted my gaze. The soldiers standing in front of me didn’t move. They didn’t speak and didn’t even breathe too loudly, like that might set me off.Too late for that.“They moved,” I repeated, quieter now. Then I leaned forward slightly, my eyes locking onto them. “So what you’r

Chapter One HundredZaneI let her walk away and that was the first mistake. The second was pretending it didn’t get under my skin. The corridor had gone quiet after she disappeared around the corner, but the tension she left behind hadn’t. It clung to the air, sharp and lingering, like the afterma

Chapter Ninety NineAriaI didn’t go back to my room. Or more specifically, I couldn't stay put in my room no matter how hard I tried. It had been two days, two excruciating days and I hadn't been ae to calm down. That alone should’ve told me everything about where my head was at.Zane’s order stil

  • Contractually Married my ex-mate's father   98-Uncertainties

Chapter Ninety EightZaneThe silence in my study had weight to it and it was not the calm kind, nor was it the kind that let you think clearly. This one pressed in, slow and deliberate, like it was waiting for something to crack.I leaned back in my chair, my fingers steepled beneath my chin, and

Chapter Ninety SevenAria“What the hell is going on in here?” Zane’s voice cracked through the room, sharp enough to split bone.I didn’t flinch, even though every instinct in me told me to. I turned to face him slowly, meeting that dark, furious gaze head-on. My knees threatened to buckle from un
