Chapter 4

Author: Levinne
Later, my friend and I were confined to bed for a full two weeks before we could barely walk again.

During that time, we asked a nurse to go back to the house and bring us some clothes.

The nurse told us it was a woman, pale to an unsettling degree, who handed over the luggage she had packed.

Lucien and Ethan never called again in those two weeks.

I checked their social media.

They had already gone to several resort lodges, traveling and sightseeing with Vicky.

In the photos, the three of them were smiling brightly.

The smiles were painful to look at.

Lucien and Ethan had always claimed they were too busy with work.

They had refused to spend even their annual leave with us.

Above the photos, I saw the caption.

“Family forever.”

If I had seen this while trapped in the fire, I might have cried.

I might have completely broken down.

But now, I felt nothing at all.

I calmly contacted them through the lawyer and asked them to come the next day to discuss the divorce.

After being discharged from the hospital, Claire and I went to the police station together.

The suspicious woman she had seen that night, the door sealed with vampire magic, and the silver beads scattered through the crack of the door all pointed to one thing.

This was a planned murder towards us.

We tried to contact the driver who had demanded money from us that night so he could act as a witness.

But the phone number he left was fake. It could not be reached.

The police asked why we had waited so long to report the case.

“So much time has passed. The location was deep in the woods. Any evidence at the scene was probably washed away by the rain.”

I had no choice but to explain everything.

My husband had run off with his lover.

My friend had miscarried while saving me.

There was no one left to help us, so we could only come to the police ourselves once we were barely able to leave the hospital.

A trace of guilt appeared on the officer’s face.

“Ladies, I will do everything I can to find the criminal.”

After leaving the station, Claire and I moved back into the apartment I had bought before marriage.

The place was covered in dust.

The empty beer bottles from the night before our weddings were still there.

Back then, we had been happy for each other, convinced we had both found true love.

We threw the bottles away and decided to support each other once again, starting over.

I had completely blocked Lucien’s number.

I did not expect him to call me using Ethan’s phone.

“Where have you gone? Why aren’t you at home?” he shouted.

“You’re pregnant. Why are you out wandering around instead of staying home? My assistant said you haven’t been home for two weeks. Caroline, my patience has limits.”

“You ran off yourself, fine. But why did you drag Claire with you?”

“You’re always good with sweet talk. No wonder your stupid friend listens to you.”

Claire snatched the phone from my hand.

“Limits? You keep talking about limits, but you clearly don’t have any,” she snapped.

“Who are you calling stupid? Take a look at yourself. Why would we go home? To get infected by you? You make me sick.”

That night, the two of us sat together and blocked every contact related to them.

The next morning, we arrived at the agreed location with our lawyer.

To our surprise, Vicky arrived before they did.

Her eyes were red from crying. Her shoulders trembled.

She lowered her head and walked up to us.

“I’m sorry,” she said softly.

“I’m here to explain. Lucien and Ethan are just old friends of mine. We made plans long ago to travel together once I came back.”

She sniffed and continued.

“We were having too much fun. We forgot about you.”

“I really didn’t know they hadn’t contacted you. I sent them messages, and they would checked their phones. I don't know they are ignoring you.”

I took a deep breath and held Claire’s hand.

I could feel how close she was to losing control.

Vicky looked like she was apologizing, but every word was a display.

Old friends. Long standing promises.

We were just humans who had known them for a few short years.

“Fine,” I said coldly.

“If you’re here to explain for them, then I hope you can sign the divorce papers for them too.”

I pushed the documents toward her.

Vicky froze. It was as if she smelled something in the air.

Suddenly, she lunged at me and grabbed my necklace.

I instinctively shoved her away, and she fell to the ground.

She cried out, revealing burn marks on her palm.

On my necklace, a small cross I had never seen before was now visible.

Lucien rushed forward and ripped the necklace off, throwing it aside.

“Caroline! Why would you do something like this?” he shouted.

Then he noticed my flat belly.

His already pale face turned completely white.

“Where is our baby?”

Ethan was still at a distance when he received a call.

“The fire department wants me to investigate a cabin fire in the woods. They suspect arson. I need to go.”

He took a few steps closer and finally noticed that Claire’s pregnant belly was gone.

He froze.

The voice on the other end of the call kept talking, but Ethan could no longer hear anything.

“Claire?” he whispered.

“What happened to you? What happened?”

When he heard the testimony, his entire body began to tremble.Ethan’s already pale face went ashen, his lips pressed tight and dry.He tried to call Lucien, but his hands were shaking so badly that he dialed the wrong number several times. When the call finally connected, he told Lucien to bring Vicky to the police station immediately.Lucien had no idea what had just happened. Confusion filled his voice.“Why the police station? Vicky said she wants to travel abroad. I’m on the way to the airport with her right now. Whatever it is can wait until she get back.”Claire and I sat across from Ethan, watching despair wash over his face as he closed his eyes.“Don’t ask questions,” Ethan said hoarsely.“Is Vicky next to you right now? Then don’t talk to her. Bring her here. Now. Immediately.”Forty minutes later, Lucien walked into the police station, still completely unaware of the situation, dragging a violently struggling Vicky behind him.The moment she stepped inside, one of Lucien’s

But Vicky had been their dream girl for years. On a subconscious level, they simply refused to let go.They could not bring themselves to admit how foolish it was to overlook her as a suspect.Still, their movements and expressions were growing increasingly impatient.Claire and I exchanged a glance and let out a cold, knowing laugh. The vampire spell on the front door had suddenly sealed it shut. The passing driver had refused to help and had clearly been affected by vampire illusion magic.Silver beads were scattered all over the floor. The criminal had known exactly that both Claire and I were carrying vampire babies. If it wasn’t someone close to those two men, then who else could it be?None of this could be a coincidence. The answer was already painfully obvious. My fists clenched tightly, pain biting into my palms. The sunlight grew sharper, and a burning heat crept across my back.Claire noticed my reaction at once. She quickly reached out and gently patted my back, urging me t

Ethan had never seen me explode like that before. He froze on the spot, stunned and unable to react. In his mind, I had always been gentle and quiet.Someone easygoing, especially when Lucien was around.Neither Ethan nor Lucien had ever known the real me.Before this, I had been blinded by love, always trying to please Lucien, shrinking myself to fit what he wanted.Looking back now, I realized I had slowly been molded into a substitute for Vicky without even noticing. It took three wasted years and the loss of my child for me to finally wake up.They had never compromised in love. They trampled over truth and our dignity, taking everything while giving nothing back.Of course, they assumed we would keep giving in.So they thought none of this was worth a divorce. After I finished yelling, I hung up the phone.Claire had come out of the bedroom and was leaning against the doorframe.“This is who you really are, Caroline,” she said. When the sun finally rose and its warmth spread acros

Lucien slipped back into his usual habit of blaming me.That was all it took for Vicky to steady herself again, even letting a faint, smug smile surface. My chest rose and fell violently with anger. This vampire had lived for centuries, yet learned nothing.Even now, he lacked the courage to admit his own mistakes. This was the man I had loved for three years.Vampire loyalty to marriage was nothing but a joke.Claire spoke before I could.“Don’t push it too far?” she lashed out.“You’re the one who refused to save us because of your ignorance. You don’t get to decide what ‘too far’ means anymore.”She turned to Ethan.“Didn’t you say divorce meant divorce? What, you are crawling back to me now? You coward.”Her words hit their mark. Both men were visibly enraged.Once the documents were signed, Claire and I finally felt relieved. We didn’t care how they felt anymore. We left with our lawyer without looking back.We stood outside and breathed in deeply, staring at the sky. Then we deci

Her shoulders began to tremble visibly. When Lucien pushed her hand away, her fangs slipped out before she even realized it.I didn’t want to waste any more time.I told them to sign the divorce papers.Lucien suddenly grabbed my wrist. He couldn’t get a full sentence out. His voice broke, uneven and rushed.Ethan finally understood what his brother was trying to say and stepped in.“I need to look into the arson case. I’ve got work to do,” he said.“The person who report the case is in a hurry. We’ll set another time to talk.”He glanced at Claire behind me, clearly trying to soften his tone, but authority came too naturally to him.The brothers exchanged a look.In the end, they chose not to suspect Vicky. She had merely assumed that the person passing the cabin was a woman, and they told themselves they couldn’t accuse her without solid proof. To them, the fire was still just an accident. No matter how many doubts were laid out in front of them, they would always choose to trust Vick

The two vampires stood frozen, their composure completely shattered.“I told you already. The baby is gone. Sign the divorce papers. I don’t want to see you again.”Lucien took the papers in a daze.It took him nearly two full minutes to react. He could no longer feel any connection to our dampir.Rage exploded across his face.“Caroline! Didn’t I tell you I would turn you?”“It was just pregnancy discomfort. Why couldn’t you endure it?”“Why would you deliberately kill my baby?”“All this because of your shallow jealousy?”“Do you have any idea how much I was looking forward to this baby?”Even now, he refused to face reality.Vicky hid in his arms, crying as she tried to soothe him.I felt sick.“I was trapped in a fire and lost my baby,” I said coldly.“And you’re saying I did it on purpose?”“Would you have been satisfied only if I died in that fire too?”“Jealousy?”“Would I risk my life over jealousy?”He knew exactly how bad my condition had been. Some days, I could barely walk.
