Chapter 3

Author: Potato Bunny
I was about to put my phone down when a text from the revenue agency popped up. It reminded me that I hadn't paid my taxes in full, and my company account would be frozen if I missed the deadline.

Then, I remembered—back when we were expanding the business, the finances were tight, and my accountant had warned me about it.

I had looked at the timeline and thought I had time, so I hadn't paid right away. Later, with so many things happening, I completely forgot about it.

Just as I was about to call the accountant, an idea struck me. If the company account got frozen, even their corporate credit cards wouldn't work.

I let out a long breath and put the phone down.

That night, I finally slept peacefully. But my sister, Sophia Lane, called in the middle of the night. She was crying, saying that our mother had suffered a brain hemorrhage while on a business trip in Slarqia and was now in the hospital.

My heart dropped, and I immediately booked the earliest flight out.

When I arrived at the airport, I ran into Harry, Zoey, and the others.

Harry saw me and sneered. "I thought you were trying to save the company money. So why did you follow us here? Apologize to Zoey in front of everyone, and we'll take you along."

I felt a wave of annoyance and shook his hand off. I was in a hurry to go to the hospital.

Harry's anger flared when I ignored him. He kicked my suitcase across the floor and yelled, "Samantha! Don't act like you can walk all over me! Since you're already here, stop throwing a tantrum. Apologize, and we could let it slide."

I slapped him, furious. "Get out of my way! My mom is in the hospital. I don't have time for you."

Harry's eyes flickered. He was about to speak, but Zoey wrapped her arm around him, pretending to be shocked, and pointed at me.

"Samantha, I don't remember your family staying in Slarqia. Are you lying about your mom so that you can follow us?" she asked.

Harry looked at me, suspicion replacing the guilt that had been on his face. Then, his expression twisted into disgust. "Samantha, you lie without batting an eye. That phony front of yours is revolting!"

Zoey raised an eyebrow and scoffed. "Exactly, Samantha. Even if you wanted to tag along, you shouldn't have dragged your mom into this!"

Livid, I swung my hand and slapped her across the face.

Zoey clutched her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief, then burst into tears. "Samantha, I'm sorry! Don't hit me! I'll never touch your money again!"

Colleagues nearby were drawn over by her crying. Seeing what was happening, they all rushed to defend her.

"Ms. Lane, if you're unhappy with us coming, just say so. There's no reason to give Zoey a hard time."

"You're the worst kind of boss, looking down on us like we're nothing!"

Zoey buried her face in her hands, tears streaming down her cheeks.

The others' fury kept mounting, and before I knew it, someone had thrown the first punch.

Outnumbered, I had no choice but to keep backing up, retreating all the way into a luxury boutique. Suddenly, someone shoved me hard. I stumbled into a display and knocked over a decorative item.

Harry didn't flinch. He stared at me coldly and said, "People like her need to be taught a lesson."

I caught the hostility in his voice and struggled, trying to break through the crowd and run.

The others weren't letting up. They grabbed items from nearby counters and hurled them at me.

Seeing the situation, the store manager rushed over and shouted, "Stop! You'll pay for everything that's already broken or about to break!"

Zoey smirked and responded, "Don't worry about it. We can afford to pay for the damage."

The staff quickly tallied the damage, and the total came to 12 million dollars.

Harry looked completely unconcerned. "Zoey, swipe the card."

Zoey pulled out the corporate credit card smugly and swiped it. However, a cold, robotic voice rang out from the machine. "Payment declined. Insufficient balance."

Harry's eyes became red with fury when he saw the debt piling up to nearly 200 million dollars. "Samantha, you bitch! You set me up!"I coldly watched him rage from behind a team of bodyguards. He didn't know that every project had come to a halt after the company's assets were frozen. The daily losses alone were almost tens of millions of dollars.I had given him a chance. If he had even a shred of conscience and chose to walk away from the marriage without claiming the assets, none of the debt would be his. Yet, he chose to split everything. There was no money and only a heap of debt.My company declared bankruptcy, and all the employees lost their jobs.I watched them walk out with tear-stained faces, not telling them that there was no place left for them in this industry.Sophia had already warned the other business owners. Those employees were all blacklisted for their disloyalty. It would take repeated rejections before they started regretting betraying me.After divorcin

When the crowd learned that Sophia owned the luxury boutique, their expressions shifted slightly.Harry, however, looked at ease. "Since everything here belongs to my sister-in-law, there's no need for us to pay anything. Everyone, pack up your things. We're heading back."Everyone erupted in cheers, hailing Harry as their hero.I looked at them, my heart tight with bitterness. Amid their cheers, not a single apology came my way.Sophia's expression darkened when she saw them about to leave. "Guards, stop them all!" she ordered.A group of men in black surrounded Harry and the others.Once Sophia made sure I was okay, she turned and slapped Harry across the face several times. "How dare you do this to my sister?"The bodyguards followed her lead and did the same to the crowd. The group that had been so fierce earlier now trembled against the wall.Zoey's face twisted from the blows. She fell into Harry's arms, tears welling up in her eyes. "Harry, it hurts."Harry pulled her

"Just now, Shawn said he saw you coming over. It really is you. Sam, are you here to pay for the damages?" Harry asked.I stayed silent. Joseph frowned and asked, "What are you talking about? Ms. Lane is the victim here. You're the ones who assaulted her. Why should she pay us? She's only here to collect her ID. We've already reviewed the surveillance footage. She had nothing to do with the damage caused."Harry's expression changed instantly. "Samantha, you lied to me? You said you'd pay them. Why bother pulling up the footage? Are you trying to wash your hands of it?"He then grabbed a fistful of my hair, his face twisted with rage. "You bitch! I took care of you and your mother! How dare you trick me?"I struggled with all my strength, tearing away the mask he wore. "All you ever wanted was my family's money! I heard you on the phone with Zoey! Harry, you're despicable! No matter how high you climb or how fancy you look, the muck you came from still sticks to you!"His face flu

Perhaps Harry didn't know what Zoey had done. Maybe she had fooled him, too. That morning, Harry got up early to buy breakfast for us. Sophia came over to take her turn caring for our mother and caught sight of me, smiling brightly in Harry's jacket."If Mom saw you looking this happy, she'd regret ever trying to keep you two apart. You're not getting any younger. Hurry up and have a baby! I can't anymore, and the family business needs someone to take over in the future!" she said. Her words stirred something inside me. Maybe if we had a child, Harry and I could go back to how things used to be.Blushing, I stood up. "Come on, Sophia. You should have one yourself! I'll go give Harry a hand."Sophia then laughed at how clingy we were, and I teased her for being envious. When I stepped out of the hospital, I couldn't find Harry anywhere. I was about to call him when I heard his voice around the corner.A rush of joy filled me, and I followed his voice—only for his gentle tone to f

Sophia chided me for being childish, saying that I was already married yet still crying like a kid.I laughed as she wiped my tears, just like she used to when we were little. For a moment, I remembered what real happiness used to feel like.Once I calmed down, I asked what had happened.Sophia said that she and Mom had come here on a business trip, but the travel and meetings wore Mom out. The moment she stepped out of the conference room, she collapsed."Mom's getting older. With the company keeping her busy all the time, it's no surprise her body finally gave in," Sophia said. She then told me to come home soon and help her out. She couldn't handle it all on her own.I hesitated, but I knew I had no choice. I had to go back.Thankfully, the surgery was a success. Sophia and I took turns staying by our mother's bedside.Harry took care of everything else, never leaving our side. One night, Sophia whispered congratulations, teasing that I'd married a good man.I looked at hi

The store fell silent.Harry couldn't believe it and told the manager to bring another card machine, but the result was the same.I stood there, disheveled, watching their faces drain of color. A rush of satisfaction warmed my chest. This time, the company's assets were frozen. I wanted to see how they would deal with it.Zoey broke into a cold sweat, and the others moved closer, anxious and pale-faced."Zoey, what's going on? Is the card faulty?" one of them asked.Zoey suddenly looked up, as if she had found a lifeline. She muttered to herself, "The card must be faulty. It must be."I let out a cold chuckle.Harry suddenly glared at me and slapped me to the ground. "You gloating bitch! You're in charge of corporate credit cards. How could it be faulty? Tell me, what did you do?"Everyone immediately turned to stare at me. I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and said with satisfaction, "I didn't do anything. It's just that the company's assets have been frozen. The
