SLOAN.

With more force than was strictly required I slammed the sickbay door shut the quiet click reverberating in the quiet hallway like a gunshot. My jaw hurt and was clenched so tightly that I could almost hear my teeth gritting. The crimson Mark. Each syllable of the words sent a new jolt of annoyance to my brain.

She wanted the Mark. In reality, Ivy the woman I was attempting to shield from this whole pernicious world wanted to brand herself with the very image of its chains. I paused a few steps away from the door and leaned against the cool shiny wall my hands clenched into fists by my sides.

I had the first overwhelming urge to go straight to Ivettes office kick down her absurdly elaborate door and vent my frustrations. An enormous furious piece. She had been feeding Ivy those sneaky half-truths and portraying the Mark as a VIP pass to ultimate knowledge so she had been whispering in her ear hadn't she? The sheer insolence.

I detested the fact that Ivy knew about it much l

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 123: Echoes of a Touch

IVY.The afternoon sun was a faint recollection and the room felt cold once more. With my legs crossed over my chest and my eyes averted I sat on the edge of my bed. Once so secure the white walls now felt oppressive. A sharp reminder of the pages that were missing from my memory they were a blank slate. In defiance of Sloans wishes I had been attempting to interpret what had transpired. To glimpse the last three hours of my memory that had just disappeared—a fragment a shadow. It was like attempting to scoop water with my hands each time I thought I was getting close a searing pain would shoot through my skull and the moment would vanish into thin air. The memory of Victor’s visit hung over me like a poisonous specter. The most terrifying thing of all was how courteous and concerned he had been. His deliberate and smooth voice reverberated in my ears. “We all feel terrible about what happened…” “We will examine every possibility. That I can assure you…” “I sincerely hope you ge

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 122:The Unwanted Visitor

IVY.Wearing a soft robe, I sat by the large bay window and watched the afternoon sun peek through the leaves of the tall oaks outside. The medical wing felt like a haven a place of safety but the immaculate white walls and the subtle antiseptic smell served as a constant reminder of my purpose. It was an odd paradox. I had been surrounded by gentle-spoken maids filling meals and Sloan’s silent watchful presence for the past few days. Just before he left a silent fear that was more terrifying than any outburst of rage was etched on his face. He had informed me that he would review the results with Liam the security chief. I was by myself and the silence was a solace I hadn’t yet recognized I needed. A soft tap on the door snapped the silence. I said my voice still a little weak “Come in.”I thought it was Sophia or one of the maids who had been a reassuring but infrequent guest. Victor entered as soon as the door opened. My heart gave an abrupt uneasy lurch just as it was beginning

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 121: Quiet Tensions

AUTHOR'S POV.With the lingering smell of disinfectant from the medical wing and the weight of worry Sloan’s office was a suffocating blanket of silence. The sentiment was the same throughout the mansion. In the past there was a faint murmur of activity as the staff went about their daily tasks but ever since Ivy was attacked everything has become silent. The silence was tense but respectful. Holding their breath everyone awaited news and the possibility that she would be fine in no time. Sloan was the same. He was sitting at his desk a pile of unopened documents collecting dust the mahogany surface cool under his hands. The terror in Ivy’s eyes and the image of her lying so motionless and pale replayed in his mind like a million miles away. He flinched when there was a knock on his office door. “Come in” he said sounding rougher than he meant to. Victor walked in as the door opened. His smile was a bit more forced and his normally assured gait was a bit slower. Sloan knew it was

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 120: An Epiphany

IVY.My new reality was the sterile white walls of the medical wing. After Sloan had brought me back I had spent three days being pampered looked after and guarded like a delicate piece of glass. After going through a horrible experience I was starting to feel more like a Greek princess than a woman. My meals were served, my hair was brushed and I was bathed by the maids who spoke quietly and with soft hands. It was a peculiar life an opulent prison and the memory of that night dwindled into an even more hazy horrifying void with every day that went by. A dull ache throbbed in my head as I sat up in bed. It was like trying to chase smoke when I tried to remember the hours that had gone by and piece together what had happened before I was abducted. A sudden intense pain would pierce my skull every time I approached making me turn away. I had to fulfill the promise I made Sloan that I would no longer try. He was already very anxious. He had just left to visit Liam most likely still a

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 119: Silent merry

Author’s POV With a faint buzz of victory pulsing through her, Ivette’s fingers traced the graceful curve of her wine glass for the third time. She was by herself and the heavy mahogany door was locked and locked. Her private celebration couldn’t be interrupted by anyone. If she didnt say it herself the plan had been a masterwork of deception and guile. It was nearly too simple. She had just learned that doe-eyed Ivy was awake. And the sweet twist! Her amnesia was described as a blessing by the doctor. Ivette enjoyed the irony as she took a slow sip of her Cabernet Sauvignon. Maybe it was a boon to them. The blessing erased the memory of Ivys last three hours including the picture of Ivettes face Victors icy hands and the whole messy situation. It almost had a poetic quality. Ivette whispered to herself in the mirror of a side table “Cheers to a very forgetful little bird.”She purred softly as she laughed filling her rooms opulent quiet. Her steps were muffled by the soft rug as

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 118: Promises and Truths

SLOAN.It was a hazy walk back to the medical wing. There was still a sharp humming sensation inside of me from the cold hard rage I had let loose on Sophia but it was being subdued by another emotion. Fear. Its the kind of fear that makes your hands shake and your stomach knot. Ivy was the one I had to face. I had been given a name and some motivation by the conversation with Sophia but it had not helped me get ready for the challenging task of telling Ivy what had happened. I had to be honest with her about what had been taken away. the reality of what I was unable to shield her from. It felt impossible to hear the quiet click of the latch as I pushed open the door to her room. It felt like a fortress with the sterile white walls the quiet hum of the monitors and the smell of antiseptic. This is the only place in the world where I can let my guard down even for a brief moment. Ivy had woken. Leaning against the pillows she watched the door with a slight flicker of worry in the
