Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Tabby
The sky was gray and overcast. Before long, it started raining.

Ava's husband came to pick her up.

When she saw him, she asked in surprise, "Didn't I tell you not to come?"

He replied, "How could I not come, sweetheart? I'd never let you get caught in the rain. Hello, Shirley. Come with us. I'll give you a ride home."

I smiled and shook my head. "You two go ahead. I'm going to sit here a little longer."

I used to envy the genuine care and affection they showed each other. Why was it that we were both married, but there always seemed to be an invisible wall between Jayden and me?

Why?

The answer was simple—he simply didn't love me enough. I had lied to myself for so long, convincing myself that he didn't know how to love.

When the rain eased up a little, I got up and walked outside.

Just then, I saw a familiar car slowly pull over to the curb.

The woman in the passenger seat wore a cream-colored dress. Her softly curled hair framed her gentle, elegant features.

Jayden got out from the other side and walked toward the cafe, looking as though he had simply stopped by to buy a cup of coffee. When he saw me, his expression didn't change. He merely raised an eyebrow slightly.

He probably thought I would take the initiative to greet him, but I only lowered my head and checked the ride I had requested on my app.

I must have been distracted, because the next moment, I missed a step and twisted my ankle.

Jayden glanced at me again and frowned without saying a single word. He then walked into the cafe and left me there.

Enduring the pain in my ankle, I continued waiting for my ride by the roadside.

A short while later, Jayden came out carrying two cups of coffee to go.

"Let's go. Didn't you do that just to get me to give you a ride?" His tone carried a trace of annoyed indifference.

"No, I didn't," I mumbled.

Jayden couldn't be bothered to say anything more. He simply grabbed me and pulled me into the car. Then, he handed me one of the coffees.

I didn't take it, so he casually set it aside.

No one spoke, so the atmosphere inside the car was stifling.

Wynona suddenly pressed a hand to her forehead and complained, "Jayden, I think my low blood sugar is acting up. Do you have anything sweet?"

Jayden reflexively took a piece of chocolate out of the center console and handed it to her. "How many times have I reminded you to be mindful of your condition? You just never remember."

Wynona accepted it, her smile gentle. "I forget whenever I get busy. It's a good thing I have you."

Their conversation naturally drifted to the past, to people they had both known and experiences they had shared. There was an unspoken understanding between them that needed no explanation.

Meanwhile, I sat in the back seat like an out-of-place listener.

The scenery outside the window rushed by. When we passed the central park, the giant Ferris wheel turned slowly in the distance.

That was where Jayden and I had gone on our first date. Legend had it that couples who kissed at the very top of the Ferris wheel would stay happy together forever.

I'd kissed him back then. At that time, he had stared at me in surprise for a long while.

I thought that was one of the few sweet memories we truly shared.

It was only later that I learned Jayden's greatest regret was never getting to take Wynona on that Ferris wheel ride.

Countless memories flashed through my groggy mind. Most of them were of my one-sided expectations and his perfunctory responses.

I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

When I opened them again, the car had already stopped downstairs at our apartment building.

At some point, Wynona had already gotten out.

Jayden unfastened his seat belt and turned to look at my swollen ankle, his brows furrowed.

He asked in a low voice, "Did you really have to do this?"

I looked up at him, confused.

He went on, "If you wanted me to pick you up, you could've just said so. Did you really have to use such a stupid trick to get my attention?"

His voice remained calm, but there was an underlying irritation that was hard to miss.

I didn't know what he was irritated about. I figured he blamed me for interrupting his time alone with the woman he truly loved.

"You're overthinking it. I never asked you to give me a ride," I replied.

He probably thought I was just being stubborn, so he let out a mocking laugh. "Oh? Then were you planning to crawl home like that?"

I looked at him and said evenly, "I could've taken a taxi. It's not like I can't live without you, you know? I used to cling to you because I loved you. That didn't mean I'd become helpless without you."

Jayden shot back, "So you want to leave? Go ahead and try leaving me. Let's see if I'd ever come crawling back to beg you."

His gaze darkened once more.

I had no desire to waste another word on him.

After all, once the divorce agreement reached his hands, he would know that I wasn't throwing a tantrum this time.

I was serious.

Edward stood silently to the side, watching Jayden and me struggle with each other. He warned in a calm voice, "Sir, please let go of her, or I'll call the police."His stance was protective, but he remained polite and restrained.I apologized, "I'm sorry, Edward. I've held you up. Give me a minute. I'll make things clear to him."Edward looked at me, then at the stubborn Jayden.Still not entirely at ease, he reminded me, "If anything happens, call me right away. I'll wait over there."He thoughtfully gave us the space to talk in private. After watching Edward walk away, I turned my attention back to Jayden. The anger in his eyes gradually faded. Little by little, it was replaced by panic. He seemed unable to understand why, this time, everything had slipped beyond his control.Suddenly, I felt exhausted beyond words. I was too tired to even argue."Jayden," I began, my voice so calm that it surprised even me. "Didn't you ask why I insist on getting a divorce? Fine. I'll tel

The plane landed in Claudvale, over a thousand miles away. It was my hometown—a warm and humid city in the south.Dragging my suitcase behind me, I stood at the familiar yet unfamiliar front door of my childhood home. After gathering all my courage, I finally pressed the doorbell.Mom opened the door. She froze for a moment, and then her eyes immediately reddened. She gushed, "You finally came home!"Hearing her voice, Dad walked out of the living room. His voice was stern, but his trembling hands betrayed his emotions.I lowered my head and spoke up in a voice choked with tears. "Dad, Mom... I'm sorry."Back then, they hadn't approved of my relationship with Jayden. Still, I had insisted on marrying him, refusing to listen to their advice."You've suffered over there, haven't you? My poor girl," Mom said. She took my hand, her expression filled with heartbreak as she looked me over from head to toe. Then, she went on, "You've lost so much weight. Have you even been eating pr

The person who sent the message quickly realized they had posted it in the wrong group and tried to recall it. Unfortunately, it was too late."Am I seeing this right? Mr. Luther and Shirley?""Wait... Didn't Mr. Luther always hate Shirley?""When did they get married? They hid it so well!""So Shirley was the real Mrs. Luther all along. Then what does that make Wynona?""No wonder Shirley snapped last night and splashed wine all over Mr. Luther..."The news was so astounding that it sent shockwaves in the group chat. It brought even the employees who usually never spoke in the chat out of hiding.Messages flooded the screen one after another.Jayden, on the other hand, froze in place like someone had pressed the pause button on him. His mind buzzed before going completely blank.By the next day, the gossip had spread throughout the entire company.Wynona reluctantly came to work, but everywhere she went, she was met with pointing fingers and undisguised looks of contempt. Jayden went to see Wynona again. The moment she came downstairs and saw him, her face lit up with delight. There was also a faint sense of smug satisfaction that he'd played right into her hands."Jayden, did you come to keep me company?" she asked.Getting straight to the point, Jayden questioned her in a calm voice that was almost devoid of emotion. "Have you seen the company group chat?"Wynona froze for a moment. "No. Why? What happened?"Jayden fixed his piercing gaze on her intently, scrutinizing her openly. "Weren't you the one who leaked those rumors about us?"Shock and hurt instantly filled Wynona's eyes. She took a step back, and her eyes reddened almost immediately, as if on cue."Jayden, how could you think that of me? I just came back to the country. I hardly know anyone here, and today was my first day at your company. How could I possibly have colluded with your employees to spread those rumors? What would I even gain from doing that?"A corner of Jayden's eye t

Jayden, carrying the smell of alcohol and an unmistakably sour mood, drove Wynona back to her apartment.Wynona comforted him gently. "Don't be upset, Jayden. Shirley probably just misunderstood. I don't think she did it on purpose. I'm fine. I just feel bad that you got dragged into this. Please don't fight because of me."Jayden stared absentmindedly at the neon lights flashing past outside the window and responded with a distracted hum. After a brief pause, Wynona reached out tentatively, intending to straighten his slightly crooked tie.Her voice became even softer as she breathed, "It hurts me to see you like this..."But Jayden instinctively leaned away.Wynona's hand froze in midair, and her expression showed a tinge of hurt. "Jayden, I didn't mean anything by it.""I know." Jayden paused before loosening his tie in irritation. "I can do it myself."An awkward silence settled in the car.Jayden seemed completely unaware of it, but he subconsciously tapped his fingers ag

That night was the company's annual dinner. As usual, a banquet was hosted. Although I was about to officially resign, I figured I'd still attend it. After all, I intended to collect the year-end bonus I had earned. In front of everyone, Jayden announced onstage that Wynona was joining our company as a director. He even went out of his way to ask everyone to look after her.People immediately began whispering among themselves. "My gosh. Did those words really come from the notoriously impartial Mr. Luther?"I listened from below the stage and applauded politely.Jayden's gaze drifted toward me as if he were watching for my reaction. The next second, Wynona stumbled a little in her high heels. He immediately turned to steady her.Halfway through the banquet, I went out to the terrace for some fresh air and heard Jayden talking with one of his friends."So, you're giving Shirley the cold shoulder again?"He casually swirled the wine in his glass and replied, "Yeah."His friend s
