CHAPTER 29

TYLER

The water was warm enough to be dangerous. Not dangerous like hypothermia — dangerous like forgetting where I was and doing something stupid.

Everyone was in — coaches lounging on deck chairs, a few guys tossing a volleyball across the shallow end, Avery cannonballing like a ten-year-old. Malik was attempting to balance on a giant inflatable flamingo while Damien tried to flip him over.

I was hanging near the edge, arms on the tiles, when I felt a hand wrap around my waist.

I didn’t have to turn to know who it was.

“Don’t start,” I said.

Mason’s chest pressed into my back, voice a low hum in my ear. “Not starting. Just appreciating.”

“Let go.”

“Why?” His fingers splayed against my side, thumb brushing the waistband of my trunks under the water. “We’re just two teammates enjoying some light—”

“Shut up.” I shoved him off and ducked under, kicking hard until I surfaced halfway across the pool.

He swam toward me like a shark, hair slicked back, grin dangerous.

MASONI was already in a pissy mood before practice ended. Two days of Tyler ignoring me felt like being benched during finals—humiliating and infuriating in equal measure. I’d never admit it out loud, but I’d gotten used to his smartass remarks, his little scowls, even the way he stomped off like I’d ruined his life every other hour. Now? Nothing. Just silence. So yeah, I was plotting an apology, which was a first for me. I didn’t apologize. Ever. But this was Tyler, and the way he wouldn’t look at me was driving me insane.By the time I trudged back to the room, sweat still clinging to my shirt, I’d decided: I’d talk to him. Clear the air. Maybe throw in one of those stupid half-smiles he pretends not to like.Only when I dumped my bag on the bed, something slid out.I frowned. “The hell?”It wasn’t one of my shirts. Not tape. Not gear.A photo.I picked it up, and my chest tightened. It was me.Asleep.In this exact room.I stared at it, my mouth dry. The sheets in the picture were

TYLERTwo days. That’s how long I’d ignored Mason. Not that it was easy — we shared a damn room. But I’d mastered the art of silence. Eyes on my skates. Hands on my stick. Focus on drills. No lingering glances. No stupid laughs at his dumb jokes. Just ice. Clean, cold, and predictable. Unlike him.By the time practice ended, I was drenched, lungs burning. Exactly how I wanted it. Exhaustion meant less time to think.I yanked off my pads and trudged into the lounge. The second I stepped inside, chaos.Avery was practically draped across Malik’s lap, long legs hanging off one armrest like he owned the place. Malik had his hand shoved in Avery’s face. “Get off me, man. You’re heavy.”Avery grinned, unbothered. “Shut up. You love it.”“I don’t,” Malik said. His ears were red though.“Mmhm.” Avery picked up a chip from the bowl, popped it in his mouth, then leaned closer. “Say that again while looking me in the eye.”The room howled. Damien threw a cushion. “Y’all are disgusting.”I droppe

CHAPTER 66MASONI barely had time to toss my gear into the locker when footsteps echoed behind me.Sharp. Fast. Angry.Then—smack.My head jerked sideways. My cheek stung.“What the—Tyler?”His chest heaved, eyes blazing. “That picture. That’s why you’ve been acting like an asshole all day?”I blinked. “You slapped me.”“Answer the question!”I scoffed, rubbing my jaw. “What do you expect me to think? You had her on your lap, kissing you like—”“I pushed her away!” His voice cracked with fury. “I didn’t kiss her. She kissed me. And you—” He jabbed a finger at me. “—decided I was the villain.”I opened my mouth. Closed it. “You didn’t exactly fight her off instantly—”“Are you f*cking kidding me?” His laugh was sharp, bitter. “You don’t believe me. Even after everything?”The words sliced through me.He shook his head, stepping back. “You know what, forget it. Think what you want. I’m done explaining myself to you.”“Tyler—”“No!” His shout echoed in the empty locker room. “You don’t

MASONThe first thing I saw that morning wasn’t Tyler’s face.It was my phone. And the headline.“Hockey’s Golden Boy Tyler Reyes Caught in Heated Club Kiss.”Underneath, a grainy shot of Tyler in that stupid dim club lighting — some girl straddling him, her mouth mashed against his.Perfect. Just perfect.I stared at it so long I forgot to breathe. My chest went tight, stomach hollow, like someone had sucker-punched me.Last night I’d fallen asleep with him in my arms, his hair in my face, his voice still rasping in my ears. And this morning? The internet thought he was out there tasting random girls like he hadn’t had me moaning under him hours before.I threw my phone onto the pillow and dragged a hand down my face.“Idiot,” I muttered. At him. At me. At all of it.He wasn’t even awake yet — sprawled across his side of the bed, lips parted, looking way too damn peaceful for someone who’d just made me look like a clown.I showered, dressed, and left without waiting for him.Breakfas

TYLER I couldn’t feel my legs.My whole body was still trembling when Mason finally loosened his hold on me, his forehead pressed to mine, both of us catching our breath in the quiet room.“Holy shit,” I whispered, my voice raspy, chest still heaving.Mason chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to the corner of my mouth. “Holy shit is right. You’re… unreal.”“Don’t get all sentimental on me,” I mumbled, collapsing onto his chest. My face felt hot, but his skin was hotter. His heartbeat thundered under my cheek. His arms wrapped around me instantly, like they belonged there. “Not sentimental. Just facts,” he said, his voice low and lazy, like he could fall asleep right then.I rolled my eyes even though he couldn’t see it. “You say that every time.”“And every time, I mean it,” he shot back, brushing his lips over my hair.Silence stretched for a moment, not uncomfortable, just heavy with everything I didn’t know how to say. I curled closer instead, letting his warmth seep into me. His thu

CHAPTER 63TYLER The next morning, I thought my legs had officially filed for divorce. Every step onto the rink was like a private joke between my thighs and Mason’s smug face. But somehow, I was in a good mood.Yeah, Markus was still throwing his usual daggers from the sidelines — “lazy stride, Reyes,” “you’ll never make nationals if you keep dragging,” “try to skate like you’re not carrying baggage.”Normally, it would’ve ruined me. Today? I just let the insults slide right off me like sweat on the ice.Maybe it was because I’d already been ruined last night. Thoroughly.I bit the inside of my cheek to stop the grin threatening to break my face. If I started smiling mid-drill, the guys would know something was up. Mason caught my eye across the rink, and I swear his smirk nearly sent me flat on my ass.“Reyes, focus!” Markus barked.I nodded like a dutiful soldier, but inside? I was laughing. After drills, I tugged my skates off and stretched out my sore calves. Malik plopped down
