Lauren stumbled into her penthouse, the cab’s taillights fading into Singapore’s neon glow. Her phone, still warm from Priya’s call, slipped from her trembling fingers, the Langston lawyer’s notification burning in her mind: “Emergency meeting, 10 a.m., Langston & Associates.” Melissa’s venomous laughter echoed, her taunt—“You’ve got nothing”—a whip across her heart. The apartment’s emptiness, her mother’s belongings gone, was a fresh wound, bleeding hope.

She sank onto the velvet couch, her hands cradling her belly, the baby’s faint kick a fragile tether. “Mom, where’s the letter?” she whispered, tears streaming, her voice raw. “I need you.”

She looked at the wall, blankly, the memory of her and Tom flooding. His praise, sift kisses and words of encouragement…they all felt unreal now, like it was just a dream and she was awake, reality hitting her on the face.

Lauren’s heart pounded, her hands trembling as she gripped Priya’s arm in the hospital’s sterile corridor, the weight of her bluff against Melissa crushing her. “Priya, I lied,” she whispered, her voice raw, tears brimming. “I don’t have the proof. I don't even know what it looks like. Mom never mentioned it.” Her eyes widened, a spark of hope flickering. “But… what if she hid it? What if it’s with her things, somewhere safe?” Memories of her mother’s locked jewelry box, her cryptic words about “your legacy,” surged, a lifeline in her storm.Priya’s eyes lit up, her voice urgent. “Then we find it, Lauren. Your mom was smart—she’d protect you. We’ll search together.” She squeezed Lauren’s hand, her loyalty fierce. “Where do we start? Her old apartment?”Lauren nodded, her mind racing, the hospital’s hum fading. “Yes, the apartment. She kept everything there—her box, her papers. Lauren’s world was a haze of pain and fear, her body weightless, as if sinking into a dark sea. Priya’s scream—“Lauren! The baby!”—echoed in her mind, a desperate lifeline pulling her back. Her eyes fluttered open, the sterile white of a hospital room searing her vision, the beep of monitors a harsh rhythm. Her hands flew to her belly, a gasp escaping her lips. “My baby!” she cried, her voice raw, tears already pooling as she clutched the hospital gown, the memory of blood dripping down her thighs like a knife in her heart.Priya, red-eyed and trembling, grabbed her hand, her voice thick with relief. “Lauren, you’re awake! No stress, or…” Her words faltered, her eyes darting away, filled with unspoken dread.Lauren’s chest tightened, her voice trembling. “Priya, what’s wrong? Lauren’s scream tore from her throat, raw and primal, her eyes locked on Tom, who staggered back, clutching his chest, blood blooming crimson through his white shirt. His knees buckled, and he collapsed, unconscious, his face pale against the marble floor. Dan, who had gone wild-eyed, gripped the will, poised to flee, but sirens wailed outside, and police burst through the curtain, shouting, “Freeze! Everybody hands up!” Dan froze, the gun clattering from his hand, his snarl twisting as officers tackled him, cuffs snapping around his wrists.Lauren dropped to Tom’s side, her five-month pregnant belly straining against her emerald gown, tears streaming down her face. “Tom! No, please, wake up! Please, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry for bringing you into this,” Her hands pressed against his chest, blood slicking her fingers, her voice breaking, tears spilling down on her face. “You can’t leave me! Not now!” The purse with the note—lay forgotten, its proof of her mother’s murder eclipsed by

Lauren’s heart pounded like a war drum, her forehead coated with a thin film of sweat, her breath ragged as Dan’s gun pressed icy against her temple, the velvet curtain of the Sky Lounge’s dark corner swallowing the distant chatter of Singapore’s elite. The city’s skyline glittered beyond the glass, a cruel contrast to the terror gripping her. Her five-month pregnant belly strained against her emerald gown, her hand clutching her purse, where Melissa’s note to Dan burned like a live wire, proof of her mother’s murder. Dan’s voice, a venomous hiss, cut through her fear. “You’re too nosy, Lauren. That letter was meant to rot in the dark. But I guess it doesn't matter anymore. You can't escape from me.”Her voice quaked, fury clashing with dread, her mother’s pale face haunting her. “You slaughtered my mom, Dan! You and Melissa—my own sister! You think I’ll bow to you?” Her tear-streaked eyes glared into his, defiance flickering despite the gun’s threat.Dan’s smirk twisted into a snarl

Now, in a dimly lit hallway leading to the restrooms, she froze. But there he was again, leaning against the wall, his eyes locking onto hers with that same intensity, that same chilling smirk curling his lips. Her hand tightened on her purse, her heart beating wildly against her chest, the fear gripping her almost paralyzing her. The letter inside—Melissa’s scrawled note to Dan: “I’ve paid the nurse. It takes just one heart attack.”—feeling like a bomb ready to detonate. She ducked into a corner, finding her way through a backdoor, finally coming out to a janitor's closet. Her five-month pregnant belly pressing against her emerald gown, as she fumbled for her cell phone, dialing Ethan with trembling fingers. “Ethan…Ethan it’s me,” she whispered, voice shaking. “Dan’s he

“Security, check the cameras now!” Lauren’s voice echoed in her hotel suite, her hands trembling as she stood amid the chaos—drawers yanked open, clothes strewn across the floor, her belongings violated. The letter was still safe in her purse, burning with its own discreet truth: Melissa and Dan’s role in her mother’s death.Lauren glared at the note pinned to her pillow—“You’re next”—sent ice through her veins. She knew Dan was closing in.The security guard, a burly man, shook his head. “Ms. McCarthy, no one’s on the footage. The locks didn't look like they were forced. You think I'm insane!” Lauren scoffed at the man, her eyes burning with rage. “Someone broke in, left this note! • Cripple Billionaire Husband    CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

“Lauren, you’re shaking. What’s in that purse?” Priya’s voice was sharp, breaking her out of her thoughts as she stood in front of the bar, her hand still clutching the crumpled letter in front of her. Priya’s eyes narrowed at her, insinuating she knew that she was hiding something very important, as she cornered Lauren into a quiet alcove of the Sky Lounge, the party’s chatter fading behind them. The exotic skyline sparkled through the fragile looking glass, but Lauren’s focus was far from the city buzz, her gaze locked in the letter on the table, now in her purse—Melissa’s scrawled note to Dan: “I’ve paid the nurse. It takes just one heart attack.”It was what she had been searching for. What she had spent nights thinking over. But it was far from what she expected. She knew Melissa was bad, her half-sister hated her with everything in her. “Lauren, are you sure about this party?” Lauren looked back to see Priya standing behind her, a solemn look on her face. Priya’s voice was soft, her eyes scanning Lauren’s face as they stood in the quiet of Orchid Enterprises’ office, the city's skyline glittering beyond the glass. “Tom’s been acting like you’re all-in, but you look like you’re carrying the world. I know you too well to know that you're worried about something.”Lauren gripped her desk, the diamond ring on her finger—Tom’s, that she had slipped on to hurt Alex—now felt like a heavy chain, too heavy to carry. “I’m not sure, Priya,” she admitted, voice low, her five-month pregnant belly a reminder of her lie. “I said the baby is Tom’s to crush Alex, and now Tom thinks I’ve said yes to his proposal. He’s planned this huge engagement party, and I… I’m in too deep. I don't know how to tell him the truth… I don't want to keep hurting him.” Her heart raced.Priya heaved a heavy sigh and set down her coffee, frowning. “In dee
