Serena's POV

I woke up to the sound of Ryker's voice, low and troubled. My neck was killing me from sleeping in that awkward position, but I stayed still and listened.

"Can't lose it," he was mumbling, his brow furrowed even in sleep. "Can't lose my pack... everything I built..."

His hand was still wrapped around my wrist, but looser now. He was having some kind of nightmare, his body tense with whatever he was dreaming about.

Without thinking, I reached over with my free hand and touched his arm gently. "Shh," I whispered. "It's okay."

He went quiet almost immediately, his face relaxing as if my touch had chased away whatever demons were haunting his sleep.

I stared down at him, wondering what could make someone so powerful look so scared, even in his dreams.

My eyes drifted to his shirt again. To that lipstick stain that was still there, mocking me. The anger came rushing back, hot and fierce and completely unwelcome.

I carefully pulled my wrist free from his grip and stood up. He s

Serena's POVBy the afternoon, I was going crazy. I had cleaned my room, organized everywhere. But nothing helped with the restless feeling inside me.I needed fresh air. I needed to get out of this house, even if it was just for a little while.I walked to the front door, hoping maybe the guards wouldn't be there or would let me pass without making a big deal about it. But of course, a guard was standing right at the door. "Ma'am," he said with a polite nod as I approached. "Going somewhere?""Just outside for a walk," I said, trying to sound casual. "I won't go far.""I'm sorry, ma'am, but I can't let you leave without the Alpha's permission."The same old excuse. I felt my patience snap."I'm not asking to leave forever!" I said, my voice getting louder. "I just want to walk around outside for a few minutes. I'm not a prisoner!""Ma'am, please calm down. I'm just following orders….""Orders? I'm going crazy stuck in this house all day! All I want is some fresh air!"The guard shif

Chapter 31Ryker's POV"What did you mean?" I demanded, stepping closer to Serena. "What mistress?"Jason stared at me and left the room. Serena crossed her arms and looked away from me, her jaw set in that stubborn way that meant she wasn't going to answer."Serena, I asked you a question.""And I don't have to answer it." Her voice was cold, distant. "You figure it out."I was about to press her further when heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs. Jason appeared in the doorway looking frantic."Alpha, you need to go attend to the elder now. The elders are waiting and they're not happy about the delay."I looked between Jason's urgent face and Serena's turned back. The elders never called emergency meetings unless something was seriously wrong, but I wasn't done with this conversation."Five minutes," I told Jason."Alpha, with respect, we don't have five minutes….”"Fine." I looked at Serena one more time. "We'll finish this when I get back."I followed Jason downstairs where Alec w

Ryker's POV I woke up feeling different. My head was pounding from the alcohol, but there was something else, a warmth, a scent that lingered in my room like a sweet memory.Serena had been here. Her scent was everywhere - on my pillow, on the sheets, even on my clothes. I closed my eyes and breathed it in, trying to remember. Flashes came back to me. Her hands on my shirt, unbuttoning it. Her face looking down at me with worry. Me holding onto her wrist, begging her not to leave.I had slept better than I had in months. Years, maybe. And it was because of her.I checked the time and was shocked to see it was noon. I never slept this late. Never.I made my way downstairs, still wearing yesterday's clothes, expecting to find Serena but i saw Alec. "You’re finally awake."Alec sitting at the dining table with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. His expression was anything but friendly."Where's Serena?" I asked."Still sleeping. Unlike some people, she actually needs rest after dealing w

  • Curse of the Alpha demon   This isn’t part of the plan

Serena's POVI couldn't sit still after what happened in the living room. The tension between Ryker and Alec had been so thick I could almost taste it. Something was wrong, but neither of them would tell me what. But then the two of them lie that there’s nothing. And Ryker just brushed it off like I’m not worthy of his time and explanation. I told myself I didn't care. This was what I wanted, wasn't it? For him to leave me alone? For there to be distance between us?But I kept checking the clock on the wall. Seven o'clock became eight, then nine, then ten. I found myself walking to the window every few minutes, looking out at the driveway for his car. I saw Ryker driving out earlier and now I couldn’t help but anticipate for his return. "This is stupid," I muttered to myself. "Why do I care where he is?"But I did care, and I hated myself for it.I tried to distract myself by watching TV, but I couldn't focus on anything. I tried reading, but the words just blurred together on the

  • Curse of the Alpha demon   Drunk

Ryker's POVI slammed my bedroom door shut and leaned against it, my chest heaving like I'd just run a marathon. Alec's words kept playing in my head like a broken record. *Do you really think she'll accept you when she finds out what you did to her father?*Of course she wouldn’t. I walked to my window and stared out at the woods beyond. The truth was eating me alive. Deep down, I knew Alec was right. Serena would never forgive me. How could she? I had killed her father. Even though I couldn’t remember who exactly her father is. I couldn't stay in this room. I couldn't think about this anymore.—-Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in a bar downtown. The place was dark and loud, exactly what I needed. I ordered whiskey and kept ordering until the bartender stopped asking what I wanted and just kept refilling my glass. The alcohol burned going down, but it wasn't enough to burn away Alec's words. Or the look on Serena's face when she'd brought me that sandwich. "Hey there, hands
