LOGINSkylar.
“So, this is where I live,” I announced as I opened the door to my single bedroom abode. The floor was clean and the sheets were folded but I'm sure it still looked like a shit hole to Conrad, who walked in after me.
He had to bend his head to enter the room. His black face cap did well to cover most of his face but anyone who knew him averagely well could recognize him at first glance.
I just hope no one around here did.
“Alright, let's pack your things and bolt.” He said, sweeping his gaze around.
Yeah, we bolt.
According to Conrad, there was a place his grandfather's influence didn't reach. And yes, it was here in this same country. He said the town was habited by a group of people who were very territorial and had resisted his grandfather for years. He didn't tell me more than that, though I would've loved to ask if they could be trusted.
For the next twenty minutes, I ransacked my small wardrobe and luggage boxes, separating clothes that I might need from those I wouldn't.
“So this town you said we're going to, do they have Wi-Fi?” I asked, facing Conrad as I squeezed a sweater into the box.
“What?” He raised a brow.
I shrugged, “You know, it'll be important so we can hear the news about your disappearance and all.”
“Skylar, hurry up, we don't have much time.” He said, his right leg gyrating.
I frowned and turned around. “You know, if you don't want to be in here, you can just wait outside.” I grumbled, throwing in my clothes.
“Whoa, Skylar, wait.” I felt his hands on my shoulder turning me around.
Up close, I had to arch my head up 60 degrees to see his face.
“I could see your leg gyrating, you don't like it in here and you don't have to pretend to…”
He cut me off, “I do like it here. It's cosy and private. And as for my leg gyrating, I'm nervous, Skylar. I know this area, there's a small pack close by and I know my grandfather has the Alpha in his pocket. They could be watching us as we speak.” He said with a serious face.
My eyebrows shot up. “What? No, Conrad, I've been living here for three years, it can't…”
“And my grandfather has been the most powerful Alpha in the entire country for fifty years. Do you think he did all that by not first subduing the surrounding packs first?” Conrad tilted his head and I could hang my mouth hung open speechlessly.
Someone knocked at the door and I flinched while Conrad turned swiftly and held me to his back. My heart raced.
“Skylar dead, are you in there?” A familiar feminine voice asked from outside.
I pushed Conrad's hands away, giving him a ‘you’re so dramatic’ look as I went to the door.
Mrs. Parker stood at the doorstep with her usual big smile on.
“Hi Mrs Parker,”
“Goodness Skylar, where have you been for the past two days. I thought something bad happened to you, I was worried sick, child.” She said in her motherly tone, cupping my face affectionately.
“I'm fine, Mrs Parker, I just had to study at a friend's place.” I lied with a smile.
“And you didn't call me, uh-huh, not fair.” She shook her head and I held her hands.
“I'm sorry I didn't call, ma. Listen I kinda have to prepare for school so, I'll see you later, right?” I said and blocked her view as her eyes had drifted past me into my room.
She smiled and nodded frantically, “Take care, child.”
I heaved a breath as I shut the door. “She's really something.” I remarked, walking back towards Conrad.
But he sprang towards me and grabbed my wrist tightly. “She's a werewolf!”
“What? No way!” I've known Mrs Parker for more than three years.
“She is, she's using a scent cloak, that's why you can catch her wolf scent!” Conrad explained, gathering my bags and the rest of my clothes.
“Then how can you tell?” I asked, confused.
“I'm an Alpha.”
Of course, you are.
“So what do we do now?” I asked, lifting my box on my head.
“We bail like we planned. Let's just hope your landlady hasn't called for backup yet. I know she saw my face.” He said, collecting my bag and pushing me forward gently.
We glanced around cautiously as we made our way out of the compound. We marched towards where Conrad had decided to park his car across the streets.
My chest heaved as my legs carried me across the road, Conrad's hands still wrapped around my wrist.
At that moment, a man appeared before Conrad and we halted abruptly.
“Mr Conrad Reign, it's really you.” He said with an outstretched arm and an overly wide grin.
My heart skipped and my eyes found Conrad's face, waiting for his next move.
He calmly took the man's hand but didn't return the smile.
I glanced around the streets and there they were. Two, no three or more men from different angles walked out casually but I knew they were coming for us.
I looked at Conrad again and saw both men’s hands tightening on each other's. I got the message immediately. Without another word, I bolted down the streets and made a sharp turn down a narrow alley.
Conrad's car was just ahead. Air whipped past my face, my leg was almost a blur below me.
However, a body landed in front of me and I crashed into him. We both fell on the hard ground before skidding to a stop. I was on top.
I groaned, feeling a momentary jolt of pain all over my body before it disappeared. The man below me had the same grin as his friend from earlier.
I needed no soothsayer to tell me before I jumped off him and dashed towards the car. But I came crashing face down immediately.
He was holding my ankle. I groaned frustratedly, finding his ugly fat face and sending my boot into it.
I continued to rain kicks on him, panting with each kick.
“You bitch!” He yelped as his hand finally slipped from my ankle and I bolted.
Conrad was probably still taking care of the others as that one seemed to be the only one in the alley with me.
I ignited the car engine the moment I entered the car, watching the ugly man scramble to his feet in front. I revved the engine with a wicked grin and just as he stood up, I jammed my foot on the accelerator.
Bang, scream, roll and crash. That was the case with the ugly faced man after I hit him mercilessly.
I didn't stop the car as I drove out of the alley. Something crashed into my side of the car, shattering the glass instantly.
“Shit!” I exclaimed, raising my arm to protect my eyes from the shards of glass.
All of a sudden, something or someone landed on the hood of the car.
“Conrad?” I exclaimed with an uncharacteristic thin voice.
“Drive!”
That was all it took for me to drift the vehicle around, pointing to the west and speeding across the streets.
From the side mirror, I could see four bodies littered on the road behind us. My skin crawled as my brain noted that it was my mate's handiwork.
“Should I pull over?” I asked as Conrad threw my luggage box inside and tried to enter the car through the window.
“No! Keep going!”
And I did, watching as he managed his way smoothly into the passenger seat. He didn't even do so much as break a sweat.
“Damn, Skylar, where did you learn how to drive like that?” He asked and I found myself grinning excitedly.
“You were badass too.” I returned the compliment.
“I told you my grandfather is still onto us.” Conrad said, rolling up the window.
“Should we head back to your apartment and get some things first before going t
o that town you talked about?” I asked.
“No, no turning back. Straight to the town we go.” He answered, sinking into his seat as I drove.
Skylar.I took a step back as the wolves closed in around us. All sounds had zoned out, leaving the echoes of my heartbeat for me to hear—thundering underneath my chest. I couldn't even feel my left hand because Conrad's grip was so tight around it.A loud snarl escaped the wolves and I reached for Conrad's arm with my free hand. I gave him a worried look as he faced me. But he, surprisingly, gave me a warm smile and held the back of my hand reassuringly. What was he so hopeful about? Couldn't he see that this was the end?The revving of engines filled the air, stealing my attention and that of the wolves. In an instant, a car drove in, its tires spraying off sand and debris as it drifted along the woods. It turned sharply and hit the first wolf before it could react. I gasped sharply as the wolf was sent flying into a tree bark and a bone-snapping sound erupted. It didn't stop there and hit the next wolf who made a little attempt to jump but still got hit, ending up in the same predi
Skylar..“What are you talking about?” I asked, my tone high-pitched.He gestured for me to come to him and I heaved a sigh before doing so. I rolled my eyes as he grinned at me.“What is it?”“Would you relax and listen! There's a wolfsbane spray can in here, meaning we have a chance of escape.” He said and I narrowed my eyes on the cereal-laden plate. There was an obvious bump that showed there was truly something beneath.“So? How do we get out of here with one spray can? I may not be from your pack but I'm pretty sure there are about a million guards lurking around!” I pointed out, my tone dropping with sarcasm.Conrad chuckled and I was hit with befuddlement.“We're not going to fight the entire pack guards. We just need to get past a few—the ones who'd be present at the ritual in about an hour.” He said and I breathed, my nervousness heightening. He slid his hand over mine through the bars and looked straight into my eyes. I felt calmness wash over me even though I didn't want
Skylar.“Look at you, still as weak as you used to be, a worthless reminder of your insignificance in my pack all those years.” Alpha Caleb said, his lips upturned in pure disgust. An expression I was so familiar with.“To think you'd have grown to steer away from trouble after all these years. Pfft, I can't believe I overestimated you. You'll never be sensible, always jumping from one trouble to another. I cannot even begin to fathom how you got yourself into trouble of this magnitude!” He chided, his eyes blazing. He moved closer to my cell, glaring into my eyes. I gasped, fighting off the tears that danced at the edge of my eyelids.“You remember how useless you were back in my pack? How we had to put you to warriors’ quarters cleaning duty just so you could earn your place in the pack.” His tone dripped with taunt, reminding me of my painful days.“You couldn't even do that without causing more trouble. You had to walk in on your superiors in their private moment. Not just private
Skylar..The dim light in the dungeon cell flickered, making my head spin and the space feel even smaller, more suffocating.Conrad's expression had been that of concern earlier but it turned to stormy the moment I dropped the news about Alpha Griffith’s plan. His jaw tightened like he'd been hit with a bolt of lightning.I watched him keenly, trying to untangle the knot of anger and doubt around my heart. Part of me wanted to lash out, to demand answers about my mother, but another part—the part tied to our bond—held me back, whispering that he couldn't be that monster."Conrad,” I drawled, “what's the ritual really about?" I pressed, my voice steadier than I felt. "You're making me nervous with the way you're acting."He stopped pacing and gripped the bars between us, his knuckles turning white. He said nothing for a long moment, he just stared at the floor as if debating how much to reveal. Finally, he swallowed hard, his Adam's apple moving in his neck. "It's called the Soulscour
Conrad..“Oh goddess! That's Master Conrad!”“He's back!”“He's unbelievable! After abandoning his pack, he just waltzes in?”I ignored the voices of my pack members as I walked through the massive compound towards the pack house. My home.I had pushed down every ounce of apprehension in my heart and I was only filled with determination.Today, I got my mate back.“Hold it right there, Master Conrad!” A young guard said, holding his hand forward as I approached the entrance.I paid him no attention and walked past him but he shocked me by holding my shoulder. My brows furrowed and my wolf growled in fury. Then I shocked the guard by grabbing his arm and throwing him over my shoulder. I heard his bones crack as he crashed on the floor before me.Stepping over him, I walked into my domain. My grandfather's—point of correction. The reception hall was empty, save for Lexi, the receptionist whose attention was stolen by her computer.I walked into the elevator and clicked the fourth floor
Skylar..My heart continued to pound like a war drum in my chest, Clyde's words resounding in my ears like a horrible tale I couldn't shake off."And did he tell you he holds your mother captive?" It couldn't be true. Conrad would never do that, he just wouldn't. How was I supposed to believe that the man who'd looked at me like I was his whole world, who'd run away from everything for me was holding my mother prisoner? No. Clyde was lying, he had to be. That's what Conrad had warned me about his nature—cunning, manipulative, always playing angles. But the way Clyde had said it, with the way his eyes glinted with the smugness of a devil who enjoyed inflicting pain on others, like he knew it would shatter me... it planted a seed of doubt I found hard to uproot.Standing up, I paced the room, the cold tiled floor biting into my bare feet, but I barely felt it. My breath felt labored as the walls of the room seemed closer now, the air thicker with the scent of polished wood and distant
