My vision began to blur out as a pool of salty water filled the dried-up, shock-streaked eye sockets.
"Why would they do that to me? What did I do to deserve this?"
"Am I too miserable that anyone could do anything to me?"
"Do I even deserve to be called a man?"
The pain which they had caused me yesterday was nothing compared to this one. I managed to walk with those external injuries causing me pain when I walk only. However, this time they had hit me internally and I could not find a way to even move my ass with this killing pain.
Why me? Asking this question, I get out of the bus and took a route back home bearing the weight of those eyes staring, and mouths laughing all through the way.
What can I do to stop them?
Nothing!
I was just a miserable man with no physical, mental, or emotional powers to deal with people using me, hating me, teasing me, and making fun of me.
I was shattered to my core, my hopes were drowned, and my faith was lost. I didn't know how to still stay alive with the damage they had caused me.
Still holding up my senses, I swallowed down the emotions and shut the doors of all the sympathies blooming out for myself.
I locked myself for three days and two nights. I didn't cry even a tear. They had done something to me which was new and surprising for me.
I pledged instead. I prayed.
"Dear God,
Make me efficient, and strong.
Make me handsome, and good-looking.
And give me... Bless me ...
With powers no human being possessed.
Take anything you want. I'm ready. I'm ready to give out anything you want. Just turn me into a powerful man."
My sobs silenced gradually and I rode into my world of imagination. A peaceful wave circled around me and kissed me everywhere like the goddess of air was charming to me. I experienced tickling which eased my pain and made me relieved.
"Where am I now.?" I asked myself.
The tunnel lit with unseen colors and filled with the flutters of unimaginable butterflies as I traveled through it to an unforeseen territory that was illuminated with the candles blazing dark.
"Where have I landed?"
I asked.
My whole body was spinning at 360 degrees when I attempted to turn my head around to investigate my surroundings. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed in finding even a single dot of light peeking in from a distance to give relief to my heart thumping wildly.
"You believe in God?" A voice came piercing through the darkness around me from an undetectable space.
Shockingly, I turned around to figure out who it was. My eyes strained to look through the grave blackness but couldn't find even a hint of anyone being around.
"Whoo.. who are you?"
I forced down my fears and spoke.
"Out of all His creatures, God has not given humans any supernatural power for a reason." Ignoring my question, the voice continued with its point.
"It's a real pity to see humans now begging for powers without understanding the reason for keeping them deprived of it." The voice was full of resentment.
You're now called here. Into the room where secrets are kept and formed."
As it took a pause, I found a chance to ask another question of mine.
"Wha.. what secret?" I asked.
"I'm here to announce two pieces of news to you. One is a good one and the other is bad. The decision is left to you which one you want to listen to first."
To my greatest shock, it was the first time my question was being addressed, giving me the realization that there was actually someone addressing me but not a tape recorder playing out there in the darkness.
My mind was tangled in the web of questions and confusion making it worse. What could it possibly be about? I had zero ideas about it.
I was forced to make a decision in this terrible situation without any help being offered.
Neither did I have an idea about what was about to happen to me nor did I know what it was all about. Amidst the dark pool, I drowned till my head with my knees shivering and my heart skipping beats. I was so puzzled to make a decision when it repeated his words and added.
"You don't have much time. Fast!"
"Goo.. good." I blabbered out in a hurry.
"I'm pleased to reveal to you that your prayer has been heard and pondered over and answered.
"As a result, you'll be blessed with some supernatural power, and with respect to that you have to go through a physical, mental, and emotional transformation." The voice was firm, strong, and determined enough to send chills down my spine.
I became so overwhelmed when I heard the word "supernatural powers", finally, I would no longer be going to an individual with an unintellectual mind and ugly body who's been bullied by everyone throughout his life. This was going to change. Everything was. I had no idea by now whether it was for the good or the bad. Neither was I interested in bothering to think about it. All that was exciting me so much as to make me jump on my feet amidst the tension that was screwing me up inside, was the fact that I'd be going to be a superhero.
"Enough of this ugly man, I'd be a different man now with all these superpowers, and who'd dare to bully me now?" I smirked arrogantly.
Engrossed in imagining the future life that I forgot about the bad news.
"And!? The bad one?" I subconsciously bit my lower lip indicating my curiosity. The silence was winding around me easing me over my lips.
No answer came.
Seems like silence was ruling the throne again. Before an intense voice intruded carrying the intensity to shake the existence of anyone who gets to hear it.
"You've to sacrifice yourself to satiate your hunger for power." A composed yet gruff voice echoed in the darkness.
"Sacrifice yourself?" I repeated the words like it doesn't make any sense to me. Or as if I was unable to understand the language at first.
"What the heck, do you mean by this?"
"If I'd sacrifice myself then how would I be able to make use of these powers? What use would they be of me then?" I wondered.
"Yes. To achieve something in your life, you've to make sacrifices. Just like that, you've to give yourself to satiate your uncontrollable hunger for power." The voice resonated clearer.
"I accept!" Before wasting even a second I said.
Never had I before been so certain and abrupt about any of my decisions. I didn't know what made me eagerly plunge into agreeing to the terms and conditions of this mysterious voice offering me a deal.
Grey puffs of smoke began to fill in the space around me like I was put in some airtight sealed container. Gradually, my breath began to break and the shutters of my eyes dragged themselves shut. I could not tell whether my eyes were open or shut, for it was equally dark either way.
I was suffocating heavily, my chest was thumping like I had run miles. Pearls of sweat were embellishing my face and neck glinting in the streams of darkness.
Unsuppressed groans began to resonate loudly in the quietness around.
"Aahh..." I shot up panting heavily from my sleep with the terrible memory of the nightmare lingering like a danger over me.
Astonishingly, my throat started to soar and crack like a parched land. I moved to my left to grab a glass of water. Immediately, I put it to my lips and smolder the throne of thirst tickling in my throat.
Creases of concern formed on my forehead, as I tried to recall the dream which swept off my memory in an instant. It took moments to vanish the memory of that dream which shook my soul to the core.
"What was it about!?" I mumbled wiping off the sweat from my face.
"What a fool am I! Who can't even remember a dream." In utter disappointment, I said under my breath and flew off the blanket.
It felt like a hot summer night in December. My body was drenched in sweat water.
I shuffled to the washroom to take shower at midnight.
Unbeknownst to the surprise awaiting me there.
Had he ever thought his prayer would have been answered so quickly, could he have asked for something else?
The cold mist started to engulf my feet and up when I turned on the shower and began to take off my clothes.
I arched my back and gasped heavily as the freezing cold water rained down over my body.
Still, struggling to retrieve from the horrible dream I just had, I tried to focus on recalling it when to my shock I was unable to do so.
"Was it even a dream or an illusion or a reality?" I thought confusedly.
Droplets of water were rapidly running over my feet as I trailed my orbs below to my feet to see the mist rising up from there.
Within a snapping moment, a glimpse crossed in front of my eyes which made me hop back and I terribly hit my back against the wall.
"Ouchh...!" I winced as a gush of pain popped across my back and was clawing at my spine now.
A wave of nostalgia embraced me quickly when I saw that grey smoke around me.
"Why am I experiencing something like this? It was not me. It just couldn't be me. I was sleeping. And I just woke up."
I muttered under my breath as I was fully under the influence of fear now.
Imminently, I grabbed the towel and tied it around my waist when I shambled past the mirror. My poor orbs hadn't had enough for a single night when something appalling, strange and bizarre again caught my attention.
"Wh- Who's that!?"
My eyes froze from the view they just had witnessed now. A cold chill ran down my spine, as I saw those red drops drilling down his perfectly formed body.
I haven't fully recovered from the shock that I heard the noise of a shrieking scream amalgamating with the splashing of water.
Yes! It was me bawling like a crazy lad who had just confronted the devil in his nightmare.
It seemed like someone had pulled the wet floor underneath my feet when I felt a sharp sensation running down my back. I bolted back to confront the deadliest view one could ever come across.
"Who is he?" I stammered in sheer fear.
It was me.Athen. Though I didn't even look slightest the same I used to be. As I reeked my trembling fingers through my hair, wishing in my heart that the illusion I was having would snap away. But it didn't. I flipped my new hair to the left and then right before I pulled them harder."Ahh…" I gasped in fright. Then my fingers traced down my shocked face, over the bridge of my nose, down on my neck, and then I pinched myself.Acknowledging the reality, I experienced sweet shrills of pain my pinching had caused.Wondering, I squeezed my gaze to focus on my past. Was this the way I used to look? Shockingly, my blown away mind was unable to recall my past, and how I used to be like. Nothing came to me as I forced my memory. Hence, I ended up acknowledging the reality, the appearance, the body, the features I own now. Though an unusual feeling was prevailing in my throat seeing the unhackneyed appearance of myself in the mirror. The next morning a sweet yet new breeze greeted me afte
Yes. Where have you been?" His question still stood there unanswered. Travis became my friend from the day first, our bond transformed from exchanging uncomfortable gazes, giving a brief introduction to sharing uncontrollable touches of laughter, notes, and sweet memories."I… I… we just met yesterday. What are you talking about? I am not getting you, man!" Muddled, I spoke."Haha…" bursting out in laughter he pushed my shoulder. "No, bruh. I'm assuming you slept for long hours and must have met me in your dreams." Nonchalantly he blabbered the astonishingly strange truth. "Yeah… umm…" my jumbled-up mind was still trying to process his sayings. Was I missing something? Or was whatever he said the truth?"Seems a sure thing." I shared his laughter and then we both began walking towards our campus side by side.Everything felt amazingly the same yet strange. As I stepped into my classroom filled with chattering heads relentlessly moving, mouths bursting in loud waves of laughter. None
"Athen." I slowly repeated his name.Shifting on my toes and craning myself up to get a glimpse of the guy winning the hearts of all the girls watching him teaching Neil a lesson.I felt a pang of curiosity as my heterochromatic eyes rose above the head of the girl standing in front of me, blocking my view. I fought with everything hindering my vision to get a partial view of him. "Hey what are you doing?" The girl shouted at me when I lost my balance, trembled, and fell on her back. Luckily she managed to maintain her balance and save both of us from falling, diverting all the eyes hooked on Athen, the hero of the day, to us. Though, realizing that it would have earned me the chance to have his attention, I regretted not tumbling down."I'm sorry. I was just…." My words cut short when I saw the crowd scattering and minimizing eventually. The trio soon walked out of there as Niel was dragged out of the spot by his friends who didn't dare to come in between to rescue him until he comp
My head was spinning to the echoes winding in my ears, my mind was though unable to process the words, the gossiping wisps divulging the rumors about myself."You just nailed it." Clancy punched my shoulder in appreciation. Shaking my absentee consciousness, and bringing me back to reality. Everyone walking past us had their eyes hooked on me, as their lips showed movement indicating that they were discussing me.A wave of confusion wrapped me in, as I didn't know how to perceive the unexpected attention I was getting. "Yeah, really," Travis spoke, bewildered. "I told you. You appear different. And now we all have seen the proof." he continued.Athen's gaze averted toward him as he spoke. Amidst the chirps, wisps, and harsh laughs, some distant voices whirled over his head and got rapidly processed by his brain as if it were these echoes it had been busier in deciphering than the words his friends were uttering."Oh come on. Don't blabber about anything." I tried to dismiss the conve
The food was finger-licking good. I left Mr. Jen's place after he served me a cup of hot brewing lemon green tea and both of us shared some casual talks while sipping on it. It was a refreshing stay genuinely, especially after having gone through so many confusing, muddling events, moments, like finding oversized clothes in my cupboard to turning down a gangsta guy in front of the whole campus, and those weird, odd whispers oath to never leave me alone."Thanks, Mr. Jen." I courteously said, bent forward as he wanted to pat me on my shoulder. I preferred to call him by his name than use any titles, such as Uncle, Grandpa, and any other that would best suit his personality. I felt comfortable regarding him by his name. It appeared bizarrely fine to me. To my relief, he was not offended by it, as his facial expressions showed, he seemed to enjoy being called by his name just like some of his friends referred to him. Realizing that at this point he needed the company of a friend more
The next day, I was sitting on the couch waiting outside the psychiatrist's room, I booked an appointment. A few more people were accompanying me in the waiting area, their faces appeared normal, and their demeanor was fine. No one could guess if any of them were experiencing any mental abnormalities."Mr. Athen?" A girl called my name, responding, I shot up from my position and walked into the room, as all the eyes followed me until I disappeared behind the glass doors.A middle-aged man with grayish hair and thin-framed specs clumsily sitting on the bridge of his nose looked in my way as I walked in nervously. The aura inside the room was quite depressing and gloomy. I wonder how anyone walking in with tension and depression could find a cure here. An air of uneasiness, uncertainty, confusion, and unrealistic apprehension engulfed me as I dragged my feet against the wooden floor. The room was sparsely furnished with a dark wooden desk and a black leather chair behind it on which th
"Jade, what are you doing!?" Stopping her hands laid on my belt, I spoke in a shocked tone as if I didn't know what she was going to do.Reaching home, I formally asked her to take a seat on the only couch I have in my tiny lounge while I rushed towards the kitchen to fetch something for her to drink with some snacks to eat.As I pulled my back straight, with an orange juice bottle in my hands, I saw her standing on the other side of the opened refrigerator door with a bawdy smirk gracing her mouth."I was coming for you." Retrieving from the surprise, I eyed her."It's ok. I was just getting bored, so I thought I shall give you company in the kitchen." Winking at me naughtily, she proceeded. As her mini skirt flared in the air when she moved forward, her heels clacked against the tiled floor. Amusingly, I averted towards the shelf to grab some glass to pour juice in them. Meanwhile, she stood behind me, I could feel her lewd gaze weighing me down. I felt a crude glamor pinning me do
"Listen to me." I grabbed her by the arm and turned her around. The lewd glow shining in her gray orbs burned yellow with the fiery. How could someone be so dumb as to make his first-ever date angry? I felt the need to hit my head on the wall. After the blunder I had made in the kitchen, it would be worse if I let her go as it is. I needed to make up for my behavior."Sorry. It was my mistake." Her lips twisted, as she spoke in her irked tone.A pang of guilt crept over me, I bent to grab her hands in mine. Though, I had no idea how to make it up. I was a noob when it comes to dealing with girls, especially when their eyes were impregnated with expectations as you look into them."Ssshhh." I put a finger on her lips."Don't say it. I should be the one apologizing for my behavior." I tried to look into her eyes, though an odd thing hindered my vision and stopped me from diving deep into her. As if I was not meant to do so. The nature of the moment was ambiguous and appalling, as I sw
