The leather backseat of Brody’s Honda Civic was freezing, but I was sweating.
It was messy, rushed, and completely entirely awkward, but I didn't care. I just needed the distraction. I grabbed the collar of Brody’s jacket, pulling him closer, trying to focus on the heat of his mouth against my neck instead of the massive knot of anger that had been sitting in my chest for months. "Wait, hold up," Brody mumbled, his breath hot against my skin as he shifted his weight. His knee dug into the door handle. "Just shut up and kiss me," I whispered back, pulling his face down again. I didn't want to think. I didn't want to think about my mom working another double shift at the hospital. And I definitely didn't want to think about Vance, her brand-new husband, sitting in my living room, acting like he owned the place. I needed to feel something else. Anything else. Brody’s hands were rough, sliding up my thighs, pushing my skirt up higher. My heart hammered against my ribs. We were right on the edge. The windows were completely fogged up, the cheap vanilla air freshener mixing with the heavy, heated air in the car. I closed my eyes, finally letting my guard down, finally letting the tension snap— Bang. Bang. Bang. I nearly jumped out of my skin. A bright, blinding light cut through the fogged-up window, flashing directly into my eyes. Someone was laughing outside. "Whoa, shit!" Brody scrambled backward, hitting his head on the roof of the car. My heart dropped into my stomach. I yanked my skirt down frantically, my face burning as I tried to cover myself. Brody didn't even look at me. He just reached over and rolled down the window, letting a blast of freezing night air into the car. "Dude, seriously?" a guy's voice cracked up laughing. I peeked over Brody’s shoulder. It was Matt and Chloe. Of course. Brody’s idiot friends from campus. Matt was holding his phone flashlight, grinning like he had just won the lottery, while Chloe giggled beside him, covering her mouth. "Man, you parked right in front of the convenience store," Matt laughed. "You couldn't find a darker street?" I expected Brody to be pissed. I expected him to tell them to screw off, to roll the window back up, to defend the fact that we were literally in the middle of something. Instead, Brody just laughed. He actually laughed. "My bad, man," Brody chuckled, leaning out the window. "Didn't realize you guys were on a snack run." My jaw clenched. The heat between us was completely dead. The heavy, desperate feeling I had a minute ago vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp sting of reality. To him, this wasn't an escape. It wasn't even important. It was just a funny story he’d joke about with his friends tomorrow. "We'll leave you to it," Chloe giggled, pulling Matt away. "See ya, Brody." "Yeah, later." Brody rolled the window back up and turned to me, a stupid grin still on his face. "Sorry about that. Anyway, where were we?" He reached for my leg again. I slapped his hand away. "Don't," I snapped, fixing my shirt and grabbing my purse from the floorboard. "I'm done. Just take me home." Brody blinked, clearly confused. "Are you mad? Come on, Harper, it was just Matt. It’s not a big deal." "Just drive, Brody." The ride home was completely silent. He didn't try to apologize, and I didn't try to explain. He pulled over at the corner, a full block away from my house, just like we always did so my mom wouldn't hear his loud exhaust. "Catch you later," he said casually as I opened the door. "Yeah. Whatever." I slammed the door shut and didn't look back. The night air was freezing as I walked down the quiet, empty street. My skin felt tight. I was frustrated, angry, and still completely pent-up. Nothing had been solved. I just felt cheap. I reached my driveway and stared at the house. The front windows were completely dark. My mom's car was gone she wouldn't be back from the hospital until morning. That meant it was just me and him. I walked around to the back of the house, my sneakers quiet against the damp grass. The back porch light was broken. I slid my key into the kitchen door, turning it as slowly as humanly possible so the deadbolt wouldn't click too loud. The door opened with a soft creak. I slipped inside, closing it gently behind me. The kitchen was pitch black. I let out a slow breath, dropping my keys into my purse so they wouldn't jingle. I just needed to make it across the tiles, up the stairs, and into my room. I took one step forward in the dark. Then another. On the third step, I slammed face-first into what felt like a solid wall. A sharp gasp escaped my throat, my hands flying up to brace myself. But it wasn't a wall. It was a chest. A very hard, very warm chest wrapped in a cotton t-shirt. Strong fingers immediately wrapped around my upper arms, holding me in place before I could stumble backward. Click. The overhead kitchen lights flared on, blinding me for a second. I blinked against the harsh light, my breath catching in my throat as I looked up. Vance. He was standing right in front of me, a glass of water in one hand, his other hand gripping my arm. He was dressed in sweatpants and a tight grey shirt, his dark hair messy like he had been awake for hours. The silence in the kitchen was deafening. My heart started pounding all over again, but this time, it was pure panic. Vance didn't say a word. He didn't ask where I had been. He didn't ask why I was sneaking in at 1 AM. Instead, his dark eyes slowly trailed down from my face. I watched his gaze drop to the messy, unbuttoned collar of my shirt. I watched him notice the red, irritated skin on my neck where Brody had been kissing me. I watched him take in my flushed cheeks and my completely ruined hair. When his eyes finally met mine again, the casual, easygoing stepdad act was completely gone. A slow, terrifyingly dark smirk spread across his lips. "Have a good night, Harper?"I practically ran down the hallway. The second my bedroom door clicked shut, my legs completely gave out. I slid down the hard wood, hitting the floor hard, pulling my knees tight to my chest. My hands were shaking violently. I stared at the torn, ruined edge of my underwear, my breath coming in short, panicked gasps. What the f**k did I just do?Tears of pure frustration burned my eyes. I pressed the heels of my hands against my face, trying to block out the memory of what just happened in that office. But I couldn't. I could still feel the phantom weight of his hands gripping my hips. I could still feel the brutal, relentless way he moved inside me, owning every single part of me.I hated him. I hated his arrogance, his absolute control, his sick little games. I went into that room to ruin his life. I wanted to show him that I wasn't scared of his threats.Instead, I completely surrendered.A sob ripped out of my throat, but I quickly clamped both hands over my mouth. I coul
"You think you're so f**king tough, Harper. But you're just begging for it."My brain screamed at me to shove him away. I needed to run out the door, lock myself in my room, and never look at him again. But my legs wouldn't move.He didn't give me a single second to recover. Vance grabbed my hips, lifting me entirely off the floor, and slammed me down onto the edge of his desk. My legs dangled off the edge as he stepped directly between my thighs, completely trapping me."What the hell are you doing?" I choked out, my hands automatically flying up to brace against his chest."Exactly what you came in here for," he said flatly."I came in here to prove you're full of sh*t," I spat, even though my voice was violently trembling. "Let me go.""No."His hands dropped to the hem of my skirt. In one swift, brutal motion, he pushed it all the way up to my waist. The cool air hit my bare skin, but my entire body was burning alive."Stop," I whispered. I tried to push his shoulders, b
I didn't sleep at all. By the time morning came, the fear from last night had completely burned away, leaving nothing but pure, destructive hatred. My mom was asleep upstairs. Vance was in his home office at the end of the hall. The door was cracked open. I didn't knock. I pushed the door wide and marched straight in. He was sitting at his desk, typing on his laptop. He didn't even look up. "Knock, Harper." "No." I walked right around his desk. My blood was practically boiling. I was done hiding in my room. I was done letting him hold all the cards. If he wanted to use threats to control me, I was going to call his bluff. I wanted to see him panic when he realized I wasn't scared of his twisted games. I grabbed the screen of his laptop and slammed it shut. That finally got his attention. Vance leaned back in his chair, his dark eyes locking onto mine. He didn't look angry. He just looked like he was waiting. "You want to threaten me?" I hissed, stepping right betwee
"Are you out of your mind?"The words ripped out of my throat. My hand connected with his jaw before I even realized I was moving. The slap echoed through the living room, a sharp, violent crack. My palm stung like fire. I breathed heavily, my chest heaving, glaring at him with absolute hatred. I wanted him to hurt. I wanted him to realize how sick and twisted he was.Vance’s head was turned slightly from the impact, but he didn't stumble. He didn't even raise a hand to his face. Slowly, he turned his head back to look at me. His jaw was clenched, a faint red mark forming on his skin, but his eyes were completely calm. That calmness made my stomach turn."You're disgusting," I spat, shoving hard at his chest to get him away from me. "You're married to my mother!"Vance caught both of my wrists this time, his grip tight enough to bruise, and pinned them to my sides. I kicked at his shin, thrashing wildly."Let me go!" I screamed."Stop acting like a child," Vance said, his voi
My mom’s car pulled out of the driveway at exactly six in the evening. By six-ten, I texted Brody to come over.I was still furious. My blood had been boiling all day. I wasn't going to hide in my room and let Vance think he had won. I wanted him to see that his little threats didn't work on me. I marched downstairs wearing my shortest sleep shorts and a tight tank top, practically daring him to say something.Vance was sitting in the living room, scrolling through his phone. He glanced up when I walked in. His eyes dropped to my bare legs, lingering for a second, but his face was completely blank. He didn't say a word. He just went back to his phone. That indifferent silence made me want to scream.Ten minutes later, a knock hit the front door.I didn't hesitate. I yanked the door open, grabbed Brody by the front of his jacket, and pulled him inside. I didn't even say hello. I just dragged him right into the living room, practically shoving him onto the couch, and kissed him har
"Have a good night, Harper?"The deep, mocking tone of his voice snapped me out of my shock. Pure, hot anger flooded my chest. I violently yanked my arm out of his grip, taking a step back."Don't touch me," I spat, glaring daggers at him.Vance didn't even flinch. He just took a slow sip of his water, his dark eyes looking me up and down with that same infuriating smirk."I asked you a question," he said quietly."And it's none of your business," I shot back, keeping my voice low but venomous. "What are you doing sitting in the dark anyway? Mom finally realize how boring you are and kick you out of bed?"I expected him to get angry. I wanted him to get angry. If he yelled, I could yell back. But Vance just chuckled, a low, rough sound that vibrated in the quiet kitchen."Your mother is working a double shift at the hospital. Which you would know, if you actually cared about anyone but yourself." He set the glass down on the granite counter. The soft clink sounded like a gunsh
