The nightclub was already packed when Beth and I stepped inside. The heavy bass pounded through the air, vibrating under my feet as colorful lights flashed across the crowd. The smell of alcohol, sweat, and expensive perfume clung to everything. People danced like they didn’t have a care in the world, bodies pressed close, lost in the music.

Beth grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the bar. “Come on, girl. First round’s on me.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “You just want an excuse to get me drunk.”

She smirked. “Obviously. You’ve been acting like a nun lately. You need to loosen up.”

I didn’t tell her Mark had practically put me on house arrest since Travis became a problem. This night out? A rare break. Of course, his men were here—blending into the crowd, watching my every move. I could feel their eyes on me, even if I couldn’t see them.

But I didn’t care. Not tonight.

Beth ordered us a couple of shots, sliding one toward me. “To freedom,” she said, raising her glass.

“To not dying,”

Mark’s PovI knew Alice would try something. She always does. The moment she asked me to meet her alone in the study, I should’ve said no. But here I am, leaning against the desk while she paces the room like she owns it. Same old Alice—always pushing her luck.“I’m not here to play games,” I tell her, my voice flat. “Say what you need to say.”She stops, turning those sharp green eyes on me. “Mark, you’re not happy. I know you.” Her tone softens, like she’s trying to be sweet. “You think she can handle you? The real you?”I clench my jaw. “Sage’s stronger than you think.”Alice laughs under her breath. “Please. She’s just a girl playing tough. Sooner or later, she’ll run.” She steps closer, her perfume heavy in the air. “You and I… we’re the same, Mark. We both know it.”I don’t answer. I won’t give her the satisfaction.“You loved me once,” she says quietly, her voice softer now. “You can love me again.”I force a cold smile. “I loved who I thought you were. Turns out, that woman di

The gun felt heavier in my hand than I expected. Cold. Solid. Dangerous. I liked it.Mark stood behind me, his chest pressed against my back, his breath warm against my neck. His hands slid over mine, adjusting my grip on the handle."Relax your fingers," he murmured, his voice low and smooth. "You're holding it too tight."Easy for him to say. My heart was pounding, and not because of the gun. Having him this close—after everything—was messing with my head. And my body.I loosened my fingers, and his hands stayed over mine, warm and steady. "Better?" I asked, tilting my head back slightly. His lips curved into a small smirk. "Better."He moved my arms up, positioning the gun toward the target he had set up. The tension between us was thick—almost unbearable. Every touch lingered a little too long. Every brush of his fingers sent a spark through me.I cleared my throat, trying to focus. "So, what next? Point and shoot?"He chuckled softly, his chest vibrating against my back. "If it w

I hate feeling helpless. For days, I replayed everything—Mark getting arrested, Alice hovering around like a shadow, and the fact that some psycho named Travis was still out there. I wasn’t going to sit back and wait for something worse to happen. Not anymore. If I wanted to survive in Mark’s world, I had to be ready for it.I was up in his basement training room now, staring around. It was huge—had sleek black walls, rows of weapons hanging in perfect order, and thick mats covering the floor. Mark’s men trained here, but today, it was just me and him.And Alice. Why the Fuck was she here anyway? She leaned against the far wall, pretending to check her nails, but I felt her eyes on us. Watching, always watching.Mark stood in front of me, arms crossed, his rock hard, his muscles had me feeling squishy inside, God I needed the genes for my baby, yes. I wanted his babies. His black shirt clung to him, the sleeves pushed up just enough to show the veins in his forearms. “You sure you’r

I didn’t expect to hear from her again. Not after everything that had happened. But there she was—Beth. My best friend since high school, standing outside the café where I’d stopped to grab a coffee.“Sage?” Her voice was a mix of surprise and excitement.I blinked, almost not believing it. “Beth?”She squealed, running over and throwing her arms around me. “Oh my God, I can’t believe it’s you! Where the hell have you been?”I laughed, hugging her back. “It’s a long story.”“I’ve got time,” she said, pulling back to look at me. “You look… different. In a good way. What’s going on? Are you finally out of that boring life and living a little?”If only she knew.“It’s complicated,” I said, not even knowing where to start. How did I tell her I was living in a secret penthouse with a man who just killed a crime boss? Yeah, probably not a great idea.Beth rolled her eyes. “Ugh, everything with you is always complicated. But hey, I’m not complaining. I missed you, you know?”I smiled, and fo

I couldn’t stop thinking about it.The way Alice had looked at Mark. The words she said—like I wasn’t enough. Like I couldn’t handle him the way she did.It burned under my skin, and no matter how much I tried to shake it off, it just wouldn’t go away.I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Mark as he pulled off his shirt. His muscles flexed under the dim light, his body tense like he was holding something back. He’d been quiet since Alice left—too quiet. Like her words didn’t matter. But I knew better. And I couldn’t let it go."Mark," I said softly, breaking the silence. He glanced at me, tossing his shirt onto the chair. "Yeah?"I hesitated for a second, biting my lip. "What did she mean?"His brow furrowed. "What?""When she said I couldn’t handle you," I pressed, my heart pounding. "What did she mean by that?"His face shifted, the easy calm he wore cracking just a little."She’s just messing with you," he said, turning his back to me.That answer wasn’t good enough."Don’t lie t
