Regina had built Reine Studio from the ground up.

Every chair in the reception area, every painting on the walls, every carefully chosen light fixture carried a piece of her. She had spent years convincing clients that luxury wasn't about spending the most money. It was about making a space feel alive.

It was the one place where she wasn't known as Mrs. Kingston.

Here, she was simply Regina.

She gestured toward the conference room.

"Please, have a seat."

Daniel Virelli smiled politely and followed her inside.

The room faced the city, rolls of architectural drawings covered one side of the table, while miniature models of unfinished projects occupied the other.

Daniel paused to study them.

"I've visited dozens of design firms."

Regina looked up from the coffee machine.

"And?"

"You're the first owner who actually displays unfinished work."

She handed him a cup.

"I like people to see the process."

He accepted it with a nod.

"It tells me you're confident."

She smiled faintly.

"It tells my staff perfection doesn't happen overnight."

Daniel chuckled.

"I can see why your clients keep recommending you."

Regina sat opposite him.

"So... tell me about your hotel."

Daniel reached into his leather briefcase and slid a folder across the table.

"It's a waterfront property ."

She opened it.

The first page revealed breathtaking architectural renders.

The project was massive.

Luxury suites.

Private villas.

A rooftop infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic.

Conference halls.

Restaurants.

A private marina.

Even Regina, who had worked on high-end projects for years, couldn't hide her surprise.

"This isn't just a hotel."

Daniel leaned back.

"No."

"It's the biggest project my company has ever undertaken."

She slowly turned another page.

"Why not use your in-house designers?"

"They're excellent."

"But?"

"They design hotels."

He met her eyes.

"You design homes."

She frowned.

"I don't understand."

"I don't want guests to feel like they're sleeping in another luxury hotel."

He tapped one of the drawings.

"I want them to feel like they've been invited into someone's dream."

For a brief moment, Regina forgot she was speaking to one of the wealthiest businessmen in the country.

She was speaking to someone who genuinely cared about design.

"I like that."

Daniel smiled.

"I hoped you would."

There was a knock at the door.

Regina's assistant peeked inside.

"Sorry to interrupt."

"What is it?"

"Someone's asking for you."

"I told you I wasn't taking any more meetings."

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

"I did."

"He insisted."

Regina sighed.

"Who?"

Before the assistant could answer, another voice came from the hallway.

"I'll only take a minute."

Regina's heart skipped.

She knew that voice.

Alexander.

He appeared in the doorway moments later, still dressed in the charcoal suit he'd worn to the office. His tie had been loosened, and his sleeves were rolled to his forearms, making him look less like the untouchable CEO the world feared and more like a man who had walked out of a difficult day without noticing how exhausted he looked.

His eyes landed on Daniel.

Daniel rose smoothly.

"So..."

He smiled politely.

"I was wondering how long it would take before we met again."

Alexander's expression remained unreadable.

"Mr. Virelli."

"Mr. Kingston."

The air inside the room changed.

Neither man raised his voice.

Neither offered a handshake.

Yet Regina suddenly felt as though the temperature had dropped.

"You know each other?" she asked.

Daniel looked at her first.

"We've crossed paths."

Alexander corrected him.

"We're competitors."

Daniel laughed softly.

"That's a much colder way of putting it."

"It happens to be true."

Regina looked between them.

Something told her their history ran much deeper than business.

Alexander finally turned to her.

"I came to pick you up."

She blinked.

"Pick me up?"

"You said your meeting ended at noon."

She glanced at the clock.

It was twelve-ten.

"I can drive myself."

"I know."

His answer was calm.

"I was already nearby."

Daniel watched the exchange with quiet interest.

"I hope I'm not stealing too much of your wife's time."

The word wife lingered in the room.

Alexander didn't take his eyes off Daniel.

"You've had enough."

Regina frowned.

"Alexander..."

Daniel raised a hand.

"It's fine."

He picked up his briefcase.

"Our meeting is practically over anyway."

He looked at Regina.

"I'll have my office send the contract this afternoon."

She stood.

"I'll review it and get back to you."

"I look forward to it."

Daniel walked toward the door before stopping beside Alexander.

For a second, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel said quietly enough that only Alexander could hear,

"Don't make the same mistake twice."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

Daniel gave Regina a courteous nod and left.

The room remained silent for several moments after the door closed.

Regina folded her arms.

"What was that about?"

Alexander looked toward the window.

"Business."

She laughed once.

"I may not know what that was..."

She stepped closer.

"...but it wasn't just business."

Alexander finally looked at her.

"He approached you for a reason."

"He approached my company."

"He approached you."

She held his gaze.

"And if he did?"

Alexander's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel Virelli never does anything without a reason."

Regina picked up the project file from the table.

"Maybe the reason is that he likes my work."

Alexander looked at the folder.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"The reason is me."

Without another word, he turned and walked out.

Regina stared after him, equal parts annoyed and confused.

She looked down at the folder in her hands.

For the first time since opening Reine Studio...

A project no longer felt like just another project.

Outside, Daniel settled into the back seat of his car.

His driver started the engine.

"Home, sir?"

Daniel looked up at the glass windows of Reine Studio.

A slow smile touched his lips.

"No."

He continued watching the building.

"Let's see how long Alexander Kingston can pretend he isn't afraid of losing his wife."

Alexander arrived home a little after seven. The house greeted him with the soft sound of piano music drifting from somewhere in the living room and the faint aroma of dinner coming from the kitchen. After the day he'd had, the combination was enough to make him slow his steps. He loosened his tie as he walked through the entrance. He found Regina near the dining area, arranging the last few things on the table. She had changed into a loose, comfortable dress, and her hair was gathered casually behind her head. One hand rested beneath the curve of her stomach as she moved a glass a few inches to the left. She looked up. Her face brightened immediately. “There you are.” Alexander smiled. He crossed the room and kissed her forehead. “I missed you.” “I missed you too.” She took his jacket from him before he could protest and placed it over the back of a nearby chair. “You're eating first,” she said. Alexander glanced toward the table. She led him to the table, and he took the

Alexander was halfway through reviewing a contract when Nathan walked into his study without knocking. That alone made him look up.Nathan rarely interrupted him during meetings, and never without a reason.“What happened?”Nathan closed the door behind him.“The prosecutors met with Victor.”Alexander's attention sharpened.“When?”“Today.”Alexander leaned back in his chair.“Do we know what he told them?”“Not specifically.”“Then how do you know he met them?”“His legal records changed. The meeting was formally requested and approved. There's no indication anyone interfered with it.”Alexander stared at him for a moment.“And Andrew?”“No confirmed movement.”That answer should have been reassuring. Instead, Alexander felt the familiar tension settle across his shoulders. Victor had made his decision, and that's what mattered.Alexander closed the contract.“Anything else?”“There's one thing.”Nathan placed a document on the desk.“The prosecutors requested verification on an old

“You asked for this meeting. So tell us why you're here.” Victor Moretti looked across the table at the two federal prosecutors. A recorder sat between them, its red light already glowing. Victor glanced at it once before returning his attention to the woman who had spoken. “I came because I have information about the Kingston financial structure.” The prosecutor did not move. “Which Kingston?” “Richard Kingston's.” “And what does that information have to do with you?” Victor leaned back. “More than I'd like.” The second prosecutor opened a folder. “We already know your history with the Kingston Group.” “You know the public version.” “We're interested in the other version.” Victor almost smiled. “That is why I'm here.” The woman introduced herself as Claire Bennett, then identified her colleague. Victor listened without interrupting. Claire folded her hands over the file. “Before we continue, understand that this meeting does not give you immunity. Nothing you say gu

Across the city, Andrew received another call.“Kingston hasn't been contacted.”Andrew stood beside his desk, one hand resting against the edge.“And Moretti?”“No confirmation that he has disclosed anything specific.”Andrew's expression hardened.“Because we don't know.”“Yes.”He turned toward the window.“What about Kingston Group?”“The investors' concerns are growing.”“Good.”Andrew took a few steps toward his desk. Then stopped.“No.”The man on the other end waited.“Don't push the investors any further yet.”“Why?”“Because if the pressure becomes obvious, Alexander will know exactly where to look.”Andrew sat down slowly. He had spent years waiting for the Kingston name to weaken. He had expected Alexander to react the way he always had, aggressively, immediately, trying to eliminate every threat before it had the chance to grow. But something had changed.Alexander was no longer fighting like the man Andrew remembered. He was not chasing every threat. He was not allowing

Andrew Kingston received the report just before noon. He was standing beside the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office when the message came through, his attention fixed on the city below rather than the screen in his hand. Victor Moretti had requested contact with federal prosecutors. Andrew's expression barely changed, but the news was dangerous. Andrew placed the phone on the desk. “What exactly did he tell them?” The man across from him hesitated. “We don't know.” Andrew looked up. “You don't know?” “We know he met with his attorney. We know he requested contact with prosecutors afterward. We know the request was entered through the proper channels.” “And the contents of the conversation?” “Protected.” Andrew stared at him for several seconds. That answer irritated him because it was the correct one. Victor's attorney was not his man. There was no hidden access to the file, no convenient leak waiting to be exploited. Whatever Victor had told his lawyer remained betwee

By ten in the morning, Regina had rejected three nursery designs. Maya stood beside the dining table, holding the fourth sample board patiently. "This one?" "No." "The previous one?" "Too bright." "The one before that?" "Too serious." Maya lowered the board. "You are designing a nursery, not a corporate headquarters." Regina smiled. "Our daughter deserves better than beige walls and furniture that looks like it belongs in a hotel." "Your daughter has not been born yet, and she already has expensive taste." "She gets that from her father." Maya laughed. Regina looked down at the sketches spread across the table. Designing the nursery had become impossible to resist. Every choice made the baby feel more real. The little crib. The reading chair. The shelves waiting for books nobody had bought yet. She touched one of the drawings. "I want the room to grow with her." Maya leaned closer. "So no childish decorations?" "Not too many. Something she won't outgrow in two years.
