Iris’ POV

Iris fell asleep because she had no other choice.

Her body was tired. Her head hurt. Her chest felt heavy in a way she didn’t want to think about. Lying awake would only make it worse, so she forced herself to rest.

She lay on her side, facing the wall, staring at nothing.

Earlier, she had told herself she didn’t care. She had acted like Dante’s words didn’t get to her. Like the way he’d spoken, cold, distant, careless… meant nothing.

But when the room went quiet and she was left alone with her thoughts, she felt it.

One tear slipped out.

She noticed it immediately and wiped it away, annoyed with herself. She hated crying. She hated feeling small. She hated feeling like she wanted something she had no right to want.

She shut her eyes tighter.

Sleep came anyway.

Flashback, Eleven Years Ago

She was little again.

Not the way she remembered herself in pictures, but the way her body felt. Short. Weak. Easy to miss.

It was night.

She knew that much right away.

The air was co

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 29 – Misplaced Territory

Dante’s POVDante hadn’t planned to come to the firm like this.If he was being honest with himself, he hadn’t planned to come at all.For days, he had been deliberate about staying away from Iris. Not because he didn’t want her. That was the problem. Wanting her had started to feel like a weakness, and Dante Moretti did not survive by entertaining weaknesses. He had been distant on purpose. Cold on purpose. Avoidant because he needed control over something before it controlled him.Feelings made men stupid. Men like him didn’t get the luxury of stupidity.Still, when he heard Mark was there, inside Iris’s office, something ugly stirred in his chest. He didn’t panic. Neither did he want to die of jealousy. But then it was something darker. Something territorial. That was his wife. On paper or not.He pushed the door open without knocking.Mark was standing too close to Iris’s desk.Too comfortable.Too familiar.Dante’s eyes went to Iris first. She was standing, tense, her jaw set, her

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 28 – Uncrossed Lines

Iris’ POVPreviously Iris had been staring at her screen for almost ten minutes without reading a single word. The document in front of her was open, the cursor blinking patiently, but her mind was somewhere else entirely. It had been there since morning. Since the image refused to leave her head. The shirt.Dark blue. Faded around the collar. Slight tear at the sleeve seam. She knew that shirt and she knew it too well.Eleven years ago, her father had owned one just like it. Not similar. Not close. The exact same one. She remembered because she used to tease him about it, telling him he wore it too often. She remembered how it smelled faintly of cologne. She remembered folding it after laundry when she was still young enough to think her family was unbreakable. And now, one of Dante’s men had barged into her room wearing it.When he rushed in earlier to check on her with a heavy breath and two eyes at alert, she noticed it immediately. Her heart had skipped before she could stop it

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 27 – Control

Mark’s POVThree days passed after the incident in the car, and the house had remained cold since then.Mark noticed it in the way Veronica moved around him like he was furniture. In the way she spoke to the staff but barely spoke to him. In the way she slept on the far edge of the bed, her back always turned to him, like she was daring him to touch her and prove her wrong. But then he didn't try.He let the silence sit. Let it go beyond. Let it remind him of what he was dealing with.On the third morning, Mark stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuff of his shirt. His reflection stared back at him with a face that looked calm enough, but his eyes told a different story. He looked like a man who was tired of pretending, tired of bending, tired of owing people explanations. But he still had to do it.Not because he felt bad or because he was sorry. But because he needed control. He walked into the bedroom where Veronica was sitting at her vanity, applying lotion to her hands wi

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 25 – The Other Side Of The Table

Hugh’s POVHugh’s landline rang. He straightened immediately and reached for it. “Hugh Carter.”“Mr. Carter,” the receptionist said. “Mr. Royce would like to see you in his office. Immediately.”His lips twitched. “Of course.” He already could guess why he was being summoned and he could make this guess after recalling Iris’ face earlier on. After recalling the names she called him just because Dante Moretti was involved. After recalling her being sassy to him, forgetting she was once at his mercy.Maybe she had him there when she mentioned the sex with her which he had been craving for so long. But this…This was far from it. He still wanted to hit, anyway. But this was purely business. He just couldn’t have his mentee become more successful than he ever was when he was her age and even now that he was older than her both in job experiences. Plus Dante Moretti… bringing him in would make him bigger much more than he had ever been. Thus, he wouldn’t let the opportunity pass by.He hun

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 24 – The Morning After

Dante’s POVDante knew it was a mistake the moment he woke up.And no, it wasn’t the sex. That part had been inevitable the second Iris walked into his room last night with fire in her eyes and panic in her voice. He hadn’t stopped it because he hadn’t wanted to. He hadn’t stopped it because for a few hours, he forgot who he was supposed to be.That was the problem. He lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling.. Iris wasn’t beside him anymore. He’d noticed the moment her warmth left the bed, even though he’d pretended to stay asleep. He dressed quietly and left the room without looking back.By the time he entered the kitchen, Iris was already there. She stood at the counter in one of his shirts, sleeves rolled up, hair pulled into a loose knot. She was cracking eggs into a bowl, focused, calm on the surface. Domestic. Too normal for something that shouldn’t exist between them especially because everyone in his circle. In his penthouse, knew she was supposed to be his fake wife.
