Darla's POV

Xavier’s phone buzzed on the table, its screen flashing once before he picked it up. He spoke a few words into it, his voice low and clipped, then looked at me.

“That was my lawyer,” he said, setting the phone down. “He’s here.”

For a moment, I felt my pulse quicken. I’d already spoken to my own lawyer earlier, and part of me wondered if bringing another into this mess was even necessary. But Xavier’s confidence carried a weight I couldn’t ignore.

“Let him in,” I said softly.

Minutes later, the sound of the door opening reached us. A man in his late forties stepped inside, sharp suit, sharper gaze.

He carried a leather briefcase, and the way he moved told me he was the kind of man who already knew the battlefield before stepping onto it.

“Ms. Darla,” he greeted me politely, giving a slight bow of his head before glancing toward Xavier. “I came as quickly as I could.”

Xavier gestured to the empty chair across from me. “Sit. She’ll explain.”

I cleared my throat and did jus

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Suspicion

Darla povI crouched at the edge of the bed, my brain spinning. What was Sam doing in Xavier's house, for crying out loud? Were Sam and Xavier buddies? Did they hang out frequently like this? And most importantly, what in the world were Sam and Xavier talking about downstairs?I prodded my palms into my knees, uneasy. If not for that break, Xavier and I would have gone too far.We would have had sex there in the living room, no hesitation. I did not know if I was relieved that the maid stepped in or regretful that she did.I sighed and took out my phone. I called the home number, and the maid answered right away. "Yes, ma'am?""Get out the blue dress for me," I whispered. "The silk one. And iron it.""Yes, ma'am," she replied, and I placed the phone on the hook.I pushed to my feet and walked over to the mirror. My face stared back at me, hair somewhat messy, lips still swollen from Xavier's kisses.I ran my fingers against my lips, and the memory of how he had kissed me, how his arms

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Foul Play

Xavier's POVI slammed my glass down more forcefully than I intended. The sharp shatter of glass shattering filled the room, earning a snicker under his breath from Sam."I don't get scared," I hissed, my eyes locked on his condescending ones."Mm-hmm." He rocked his drink casually. "Funny, because you look really damn shaken to me."I took a step forward, looming over him. "Say the name, Sam. I'm not asking again."He sat there, frozen for a second, deciding what to do. Then he leaned back on the couch, looking way too comfortable. "His name's Victor Crane."The mention struck me like a cold wave. Crane wasn't merely "someone big." He was dangerous. A businessman by name, but in essence, he was neck-deep in shady business, black market transactions, money laundering, men who vanished if they dared cross him.I narrowed my eyes. "You took Darla to Crane?"Sam grinned. "Hey, relax, Xavier. He's got resources. Connections she could use. Come on, tell me you wouldn't want her taken care

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Unpleasant Visit

Xavier's POVI remained stationary, immobile, as Darla disappeared upstairs with the maid.My jaw locked in outrage as I turned around within. That moment, our moment, had been taken from me.The worst part? I'd never known Darla wanted that intimacy from me. If I'd known, I would have swept her to my room and slammed the door.It was gone, exchanged for silence and aggravation.I took a deep breath, grabbed my shirt from the couch, and yanked it back up over my head. My fingers were stiff, cold with heat still humming beneath my skin. Halfway buttoned before I even made it halfway down the stairs.Sam was lounging in the living room, reclining on one of my couches like he was the owner. The moment he caught sight of me, he smiled."Xavier, my man, you don't look too good," he said smoothly.I arched an eyebrow. "I was working, Sam. And you burst in without giving me advance warning."He threw up his hands in a 'calm down' gesture. "Come on, bro, don't blow a fuse. Your maid already t

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Grief or Fear

Darla's POV"That they're sure I'll lose," I told him, bitterness creeping into my tone. "Sure. As if my entire career is nothing more than a bet for them."He moved over and squeezed my hand gently. "They're trying to intimidate you."I wanted desperately to believe him, but in that moment, I didn't feel terribly strong.Elise's death had fractured something deep inside of me.I looked out the window. "I don't know how much longer I can keep this up, Xavier." My whisper wasn't much more than that."You can," he said, as if commanding me to make it so. "And you will."The jeep motor hummed quietly along the road as I allowed myself to let my eyes drift closed for an instant. When I opened them again, we were on Xavier's driveway.Xavier stopped and turned to me. "Come inside. You need heat. Food. Rest."I agreed, too tired to argue. As we stepped out of the car, the rain started.Xavier ushered me in, opening the front door for me, and I slowly walked in. His home was quiet, I needed

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Grief

Darla's POVThe jeep left the gates behind, and we were almost on the main road.Silence accumulated between us for a while. My fingers drummed an anxious rhythm on my bag, betraying the beat of my mind.Xavier finally broke the silence. "You don't have to be so tense. We're just about there at the hospital."I smiled half-wittedly, but my voice betrayed me. "I can't help it."His eyes ruffled over me for a moment before he lifted his gaze to the windshield again. "I see."We arrived at the hospital an hour later, Xavier's jeep rumbling into the huge parking lot of a huge, glass-enclosed complex. The moment I stepped out of the vehicle, a cold jolt of fear swept over me. Hospitals did that to you. Today was no exception.Within, the antiseptic sting reached my nostrils at once, but what drew my eyes wasn't the clean white of reception, but the known faces scattered all around the waiting room.Jace was present, his body rigidly sitting on one of the plastic chairs. Next to him was Ma

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Bad News

Darla's POV"Pick it up," I instructed softly, nudging the phone towards him. "I want you to listen to what he has to say."Xavier raised an eyebrow at me, his eyes hanging for a fraction of a second longer than they needed to, like he was attempting to decipher between my words. Then, with no hesitation at all, he took the phone. He slid his thumb across the screen and put it on loud speaker."Mavins," his tone abrupt. "You're on speaker."The silence grew suddenly too loud, the tick of the ancient wall clock too strained."Xavier, thank God I reached you. There's. there's been an accident."I jerked my eyes to his, his face tightening at once. "What kind of accident?""One of the cast," Mavins replied, his voice low and quiet. "It's not good. They just took them to the hospital. I thought you would want to know right away. The shoot is, well, it's being put on hold until we hear more."My breath caught. "Who?" I asked, stepping closer to the phone, my voice quivering even as I attem
