Darla’s POV

“Shit. It’s not here too.”

The voice wasn’t mine, but it came from inside my bedroom.

I froze mid-step, the glass of water slipping from my hand and shattering against the kitchen tile.

Then the sound of footsteps, slow and measured, like they weren’t in a rush.

My blood turned cold.

My fingers trembled as I grabbed my phone and fired off a message to Ezra:

DARLA: Someone’s in my apartment.

EZRA: Lock yourself in or get out. I’m on my way.

Screw hiding, I wasn’t that girl anymore.

I moved fast, quiet but sharp. My body knew exactly where to go. Just past the entry table, behind the large vase of fake peonies, I reached for it: the bat.

An aluminum baseball bat. It was old, dented, but still solid. It had belonged to my father. The moment I wrapped my fingers around the grip, my fear turned to fire.

I moved closer to the bedroom, heart pounding like a war drum.

One step. Then another.

I gripped the bat tighter and nudged the door open with the edge of my foot.

It was empty.

Melanie's POVI tipped my head, frowning at Richard with half-teasing, half-warning eyes. "You were spying?"He shrugged, leaning in the doorway with that casual assurance of his that never failed to make me smile. "I prefer to think of it as. strategic listening."I rolled my eyes, even as my lips quivered. "Of course you do."He crossed the room, slow, calculated steps, purposeful footsteps. "So," he halted a few feet from me, "what was this project Mandy was mentioning?"I sighed and pushed a few hairs from my face. "It's a possible campaign, big deal. She believes I'm her guy for the job."Richard nodded, his eyes never wavering from my own. "She's right. You generally are."His tone was casual, yet in some manner of his speaking it, incontrovertible and certain, warmth seeped into my chest. You weren't used to compliments from Richard, but they had a weight that lingered with you."Don't go starting with that now," I said. "It'll get you just so far."He smiled. "Wouldn't dare to

Melanie's POV I scrolled to Mandy in my contacts and called. She picked up almost immediately, face materializing on my screen as she switched to video call. She had on her messy bun and giant sweatshirt, so she was home. "Finally," she said, eyes squinting at me. "What did you do a minute ago? You hung up so fast." I smiled subtly, ruffling my hair. "Oh, that. Just drama with Richard," I said casually. "He's okay now." Mandy cocked an eyebrow. "Drama? What kind of drama?" "Nothing serious," I said, though my voice contained a giveaway. "He was just. being dramatic." Mandy gave a sly laugh. "Let me guess—horny? That made me laugh, leaning back in my chair. "You could say that," I replied, raking my hair behind my head. "But he'll have to wait. I'm not feeling up for all of that right now." "Good," Mandy said, sipping from a mug which I could only hope was her third coffee of the morning. "Let the man wriggle a bit. You baby him too much, Mel." I rolled my eyes but couldn't he

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Flirty Richard

Melanie's povRichard's arm was wrapped around my waist the moment I'd turned to him. His grip was firm but gentle, the type that caused an automatic shiver down me. I didn't even have a chance to register what was happening before his lips landed on mine and the distance between us melted. It was not a soft kiss. It never was with Richard. It was voracious, his lips on mine with an appetite it was hard to breathe through, his fingers along the curve of my spine, pulling me towards him until his chest was pressing into my breasts.I let myself slip into it, into him for a moment. Then the nag that had irked me last night slipped past my lips before I could catch myself.I leaned back, gasping. "Richard," I panted, my breathing increased more than I intended. He blinked, his eyes fogged with lust. "What?""How do we deal with Xavier?" I asked, the words between us heavy and bitter.Richard's jaw dropped for a moment before he took a breath, his arms still on my waist. "You don't need

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   It's Not Over Yet

Melanie's POVI was on the couch, laptop sitting open in front of me, coffee half-filled beside it.Mandy's face covered the screen, grinning and cheerful as always. We were talking about some new investment deal, one that was supposed to be huge, even bigger than Sinclair Group's latest merger."Mel, I'm telling you," said Mandy to me, excitement oozing into her voice. "This one's huge. Double what you made from Sinclair, if you get in early."My lips curled into a smile. "Sounds good to me. Send me the link so I can go over the details.""Sure, I'll—"But she never managed to get that far, as a huge crash thundered from the other side of the room.I turned around to see Richard at the window, phone in his hand, his face contorted in rage. He'd thrown a file off the desk, papers everywhere."Richard?" I asked, frightened. He didn't respond. His grip on the phone tightened, and I could hear him breathing hard.Mandy blinked on the screen. "Uh, what's happening there?""I'll call you b

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   The Deal

Darla's POVHe shrugged barely, however, his expression didn't shift from mine. "You never speak of anyone else. I wondered."I hesitated, looking down at the table. "No," I said quietly. "My parents died. It's just me and Melanie."He nodded slowly, nearly contemplatively. "That makes a lot of sense."I fixed him with a look, my eyes narrowing slightly. "Makes what?"He smiled weakly, near wistfully. "Why you're so used to fighting by yourself."I fell into silence for a moment. The words hurt more than I'd expected, partly because they were true. Finally, I breathed softly and said, "You make it sound like something bad.""It isn't," he said. "It's just lonely.".For once, I was speechless. I simply sat there with him, over the table, wondering if maybe he really had gotten it hurt worse than he was sharing with me.I cocked my head, watching Xavier cut into his food just as calmly. "You've been questioning me a lot about my family," I said at last. "What's yours, then, other than R

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Faced with Skepticism

Darla's POV"Yes." His tone was firm, but I sensed something combustible lurking beneath the surface. "You wished for your company back. I made that happen. I did not buy the shares to control you, Darla. I bought them to protect you."I frowned. "Protect me from the board?""From the people who will be hunting you because of what you did today," he told me. "You humiliated powerful men not accustomed to losing. They will try to get their revenge. I'm making sure that they can do no damage to you."I stared at him, the seriousness of his words sinking in slowly. "I wonder if you're telling me the whole truth."He nodded brusquely. "You don't have to accept the way that I work, but I don't work by accident. Keeping those shares ensures that nobody is able to vote you off again. Not without coming through me first."I didn't know what to do with this. Part of me wanted to thank him; another part wanted to scream."So you're my bodyguard now," I said, half in mockery."If that's what it
