Darla's POV

His lips curved, but it wasn’t a smile. It was something else. “I want you, Darla. You don't have to pretend about it anymore."

My throat tightened. “Pretend about what?”

“About me. About the way I feel about you. About the fact that I'm really interested in you. And I think you like me too."

I swallowed hard. “You’re wrong.”

“Am I?” His voice dropped, almost a whisper now, but it carried across the room like a command.

I turned away, clutching at the flowers again, like they could shield me. “Xavier, you don’t understand. I can’t-”

“Can’t what?” He interrupted, sharper this time. “Can’t admit you like me? or can’t be with someone like me?"

My hands trembled. I curled them into fists so he wouldn’t see. “You’re arrogant. You think everything is about you.”

He stood then, setting his glass on the table. I froze as I felt him coming closer again. Each step seemed louder than the last.

“Maybe,” he said softly. “Or maybe I just see through you in a way nobody else does.”

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   I Need Proof

Darla's POV" That wasn't the end," he went on. "After your fight with her, she came again. This time she lied, said you slapped her first. She just—" He slammed his hand on the steering wheel. "She kept twisting things.I narrowed my eyes. "Twisting things? You expect me to believe this?""I am telling the truth, Darla," he protested."Convenient," I muttered icily. "Very convenient now that I already caught you with that message.".His jaw clenched. "That's what I'm trying to explain to you. My phone was in airplane mode when she came in. I hadn't even realized she had touched it. It was hours later that I turned it on again… that's when the message was sent. Darla, sincerely, I did not send it."I let out a bitter laugh. "So, what you're saying is that Melanie hacked into your phone when you were distracted getting drunk and coming clean to her?""No, not really. She came the first time and I was drunk. The second time she came over, I wasn't drunk, I was just really loose with

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Back Door

Darla's POV"Okay," I said, attempting to keep the impatient tone out of my voice. "For a second."They squealed together, shoving the notepad toward me. I scribbled my signature in a hurry as they oohed and ahhed over it. Then, one after the other, they stood beside me, taking pictures on their cell phones."You're even more beautiful in person," one gasped in awe.I smiled sweetly again and then held up my hand in a small wave. "Thanks, girls. I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I have to leave now."They trilled their farewells as I turned and headed to the back of the building at last.I peered into the dimly lit area as I stepped outside, hoping to catch sight of Jace leaning against a wall or pacing back and forth. But no one was there."Geez?" I grumbled, annoyance creeping under my skin. "He brought me out here for nothing?"I had been heading back towards the door when the faraway roar of an engine cut across the parking lot.A black car turned the corner, headlights s

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Trust Issues

Darla's POVI breathed again, realizing I'd been holding my breath through most of his speech. My heart was pounding, as though he'd spoken to me alone.Watching him above, ruling the room with such effortless command, I couldn't help but feel a pang of pride and… something else that I did not want to name. The master of ceremonies stepped forward once again, his deep voice jovial. "Thank you, Mr. Lorette, for that great speech. Now, gentlemen and ladies, let the fun start! The dinner party is now open, and tonight we have surprises, games, and more. So, let's enjoy ourselves!"The crowd cheered again as waiters began streaming into the room, carrying trays of food, drinks, and colorful snacks.Music wafted up from the live band in the corner, a relaxed jazz rhythm that lightened the mood instantly.Mavin cleared his throat softly, bringing my gaze back from its internal wanderings."You look like you're lost in the labyrinth," he said, his eyebrows furrowing slightly as if he coul

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Party Starts

Darla's POVThat voice I was so familiar with was once more near me, nearer this time. Mavin was back, and now he stood holding two glasses of wine. He placed one in front of me.I hesitated. "Should I be suspicious about this drink?"He smiled, the first genuine indication of amusement he'd experienced all night. "Only if you don't trust me.""That's the trouble," I muttered, but I did accept the glass from him. Fingers brushed fingers and a strange shiver traveled my arm.I shifted away with a pretense of adjusting the strap of my pack.Mavin sat down beside me, nearer than he had to, his bulk taking over the space."You're holding up well tonight. But Darla…" He paused, his eyes flicking in even more. "You can remember that. Not everybody here tonight is partying. Some of them are here watching you."My throat constricted. "What's that supposed to mean?""Because," he murmured, his gaze locking with mine, "you're on stage, and people like to play games in the light. And you don't e

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Dinner

Darla's POV"To be honest," I started. "I'd rather be single right now, there's just too much on my plate right now, and I don't want to have any distractions."He nodded. "I understand.""And you? What's new with you?" I asked, trying to deflect him before he could launch another awkward question. He eased back some, his smile natural. "I've been traveling quite a bit lately. Paris, London, even a brief sidetrip into Dubai. Business keeps me in the air."I raised an eyebrow, trying to look nonchalant. "You must love all that traveling so much.""It has its perks. I meet people, wonderful stars. Investors, designers, even royalty."I half-snorted, leaning my head to one side. "Sounds like you've got a pretty crazy network."He smiled gently. "I do. But I enjoy it. I enjoy building, deal-making, making my mark. Every step I take feels like I'm adding another brush stroke to the painting that I'm creating."I rested my chin on my hand, watching him. “You sound like a man who already h

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   The Press

Darla's POVThe drive to the event was smooth, but my chest tightened the closer I got to the venue. When I finally turned into the street, my eyes widened. The place was bigger and brighter than I imagined. For something that was put together in less than a day, it looked like a big bash.Cameras clicked from every corner, red carpets extended far out, and reporters gathered outside in clusters like bees drawn to nectar.I left my car and sat for some time, taking in the sight. "Wow…" I muttered to myself. Part of me wanted to just drive away, but I knew I couldn't.This was too important, and besides, if I did run now, they'd just spin more stories about me. So I stood up straight, grasped my tiny purse, and stepped out of the car.The second that my heels hit the sidewalk, the crowd went wild. Flashes were going off nonstop, microphones were being shoved in my face, and voices all shouted simultaneously."Darla! Over here, Darla!""Talk about your romance with Jace!""Is it tha
