  • DEAR EX, THE VERSION OF ME YOU LOST.   CHAPTER 40

Author’s POV Daniel was on the sofa reading when Vivian got home.He looked up when she came in and read her face the way he always did. She put her bag down and took her coat off and sat on the other end of the sofa and he closed his book and put it on the table and waited.“How was it?” he asked. She looked at the proper window. The city outside doing its Saturday afternoon thing. “Strange,” she said. “Good strange. I think.” She paused. “He said he didn’t know about the bet. That it was happening without his knowledge.”“Do you believe him?” Daniel asked. She thought about it honestly. “Yes,” she said. “I think I do.” She paused. “But I also think he felt something was wrong and chose not to look at it.” She looked at Daniel. “And I told him that.”Daniel held her gaze. “What did he say?” he asked.“That it was its own kind of knowing,” she said.Daniel was quiet for a moment. He looked at his book on the table. “That’s honest,” he said.“I know,” she said. “That’s why it landed t

Author's POVLyon arrived at the café on West 54th at ten fifty. He had not intended to be early. He had left the house at ten thirty telling himself he was giving himself enough time for traffic and that was all and he believed that right up until he was standing outside the café at ten fifty looking at his watch and understanding that he had been lying to himself. He went in anyway. The café was small and warm and smelled like coffee and something baking. A woman at the counter looked up when he came in and pointed at the menu on the wall behind her. He looked around the room. Corner table near the back. Empty. He went to the counter and ordered a coffee and sat down at the corner table and waited. She walked in at exactly eleven. He saw her through the window first — just a second before she pushed the door open, moving through the street outside with that ease she had now that she hadn’t had when he knew her before. She came through the door and looked around the room and found hi

Author's POVVivian’s phone buzzed at eleven thirty that night. She was already in bed, not quite asleep, lying in the dark with the city outside doing its quiet late night thing. She reached for the phone without thinking. Looked at the screen.Lyon. Three words.Lyon: Name the time. She stared at it for a long moment. Then she put the phone face down on the mattress and looked at the ceiling and thought about those three words the way she had thought about the please the night before. Turning them over. Looking at them from different angles. Trying to find the thing underneath them that was real and the thing that was just a man who was used to getting what he wanted trying a different approach. She couldn’t tell yet.She put the phone on the nightstand and closed her eyes.***In the morning she called Sandra before she had her first coffee.Sandra picked up on second ring. " Hello, good morning Vivian."" Good morning, Sandra. Lyon texted back requesting the time we met."Sandra w

You know where.”“Thursday,” Sandra said. “Thank you Patricia.”She hung up and made a note and moved on to the next call. She had four more to make before noon. All quiet. All careful. All to exactly the right people. She was not ready to move yet. But she was getting things in position and she was very good at getting things in position.****Vivian was at the kitchen table with her second coffe

  • DEAR EX, THE VERSION OF ME YOU LOST.   CHAPTER 36

Author’s POV Vivian didn’t say anything for a moment. The city was still outside the window. The lamp was still on in the corner. Everything in the apartment was exactly the same as it had been thirty seconds ago and yet something had shifted in a way she could feel without being able to point to it.“Rhea,” she said.“Yes,” Grace said quietly. “Rhea Collins.”Vivian turned away from the window. “You’re certain,” she said.“Certain enough to call you at this hour,” Grace said. “And certain enough to bring everything I have to Sandra’s office tomorrow morning.” A pause. “I’ve been sitting on this for weeks. I needed to be sure before I said it out loud.”“How long have you known?” Vivian asked.“Known for a few weeks,” Grace said. “Suspected since the production.” Another pause. “Since the scarf.”Vivian closed her eyes for just a second. The scarf. The first missing item. The thing she had filed away and told herself was probably nothing.“Is there more?” she asked .“Yes,” Grace sai

Author’s POV Daniel was sitting on the sofa when Vivian walked in.He had a coffee in his hand and his jacket over the arm of the chair and he looked up when he heard the door. He looked at her face the way he always did when she came in from something, reading it before she said anything.“How was it?” he said. She put her bag down and took her coat off and sat on the other end of the sofa. “Fine,” she said.He waited.“He was there,” she said. “Lyon. He arranged it. Called Bellmore personally two days ago.” She leaned her head back. “He got me alone for about two minutes near the end.”Daniel set his coffee on the table. “What did he say?” he said. She looked at the ceiling. “That he can’t stop thinking,” she said. “About how wrong he was.” A pause. “About a lot of things.”“What did you say?” he said.“That it wasn’t enough,” she said. “And I walked away.”He nodded once. “Good,” he said. She lifted her head and looked at him. “Are you okay?” she said.He met her eyes. “Yes,” he s
