Joella’s POV

Then I saw Bryan’s face across the table, calm and steady. So he won’t mind me taking you out on a date. And my own voice, so sure of itself. What I do is none of his business.

I groaned and pulled the blanket over my head.

Who was that woman at dinner? That confident, flirty, chin-up woman who agreed to a date with her college hookup just to spite a man she wasn’t even dating?

Oh right. It was me. That was me.

Sorry, Aunty. Your niece is a mess.

By the time my alarm went off, I ha

Joella’s POVThe waiter came. A thin, serious man with silver hair and a little gold pin on his lapel. He poured water into our glasses from a crystal pitcher and recited the specials in a soft, respectful voice. Truffles. Wagyu. Something with caviar. Something with gold leaf. I understood maybe half of it.I tucked my napkin into the neckline of my gown like a bib.Callum burst out laughing.“Don’t,” I warned him.“I’m not saying anything.”“You’re laughing.”“I’m enjoying the view.” His eyes twinkled. “A million-dollar gown with a napkin bib. It’s very you.”The waiter, God bless him, didn’t even blink. He just nodded at me with total respect, like women in Delacroix gowns tucked napkins into their necklines every night of the week.Cavern ordered wine. Callum ordered food for the whole table without even opening the menu. The waiter bowed slightly and left, closing the door behind him. Then it was just the three of us.And the candles. And the city. And the remote. Both of their h

Joella’s POVThe night air hit my face the second we stepped out of the hotel. It was cool and sharp and smelled like the city. Car exhaust and roasted nuts from a street cart and the faint, sweet perfume of the rich women still spilling out the gold doors behind us. After the hot glow of the ballroom, it felt like stepping into cold water.I needed it. My whole body was still buzzing. Not from the remote. From everything else.Callum was holding my arm. Cavern was right behind me, his hand resting low on my back, his fingers right at the base of my spine where the gown dipped. And the photographers went crazy.“Mr. Kingston! Mr. Kingston, over here!”“Callum! Is it true you paid a million dollars?”“Miss Smith! Miss Smith, who are you wearing?”Who was I wearing? Who was I wearing? I was wearing a gown made of eight thousand crystals that I didn’t pay for, a necklace I couldn’t afford, and a pair of vibrating panties controlled by the man on my left. That was who I was wearing.“Dela

Joella’s POVI blinked. In all this time, I had never asked. I had heard it on the roof, whispered against my ear in the dark, and I had wondered. But I never asked. Asking felt like admitting it mattered.“No,” I said.He reached up and touched one of the tiny crystals on my sleeve. Just one. With the tip of his finger.“It’s Greek,” he said. “It means little star.”Everything inside me went still.Little star.He had called me that on the roof. Before he knew my name. Before he knew anything about me. He had looked at a stranger at a rail and called her his little star. And tonight I was standing in front of him covered in stars.“Callum,” I whispered.“When I walked in and saw you up there in this dress,” he said, his voice low and a little rough, “I thought, of course. Of course that’s what she’s wearing. The universe has a sense of humor.” He smiled. Softer this time. Not mischievous. Just him. “You look beautiful, Asteraki. You looked beautiful on the roof, too. But tonight…” He

Joella’s POVI was going to kill him. Both of them.I was going to kill them both, and then I was going to hire the best lawyer in New York with my new car money, and I was going to tell the judge exactly what happened, and no jury in the world would convict me.“Sold, for one million dollars, to Mr. Callum Kingston!”The gavel cracked. The room exploded. Applause. Cheers. Camera flashes so bright I saw spots. Somewhere a woman screamed like she was at a concert. And I stood frozen in the middle of the stage in eight thousand hand-sewn crystals, staring across the ballroom at Cavern. He was smiling at me.Slow. Smug. Satisfied. He lifted a glass of champagne toward me in a little toast, like we were celebrating something together. You’re right. I can’t.That snake. That beautiful, smug, tuxedo-wearing snake. He knew. He knew the whole time. He let me stand there on that ballroom floor and tell him he couldn’t bid. He let me walk off to backstage feeling like I had won. And then he pul

Cavern’s POVHe didn’t look at the tables or the guests or the photographers suddenly swinging their cameras toward him.He looked straight at the stage. At her.And I saw his face change. Just for a second. The smile slipped. Something softer and deeper passed through his eyes. The same look he used to have on our tiny fire escape in Queens, when we were kids with nothing, and he would point up at the sky and name every star he could find. Then the mischief came back.He walked down the center aisle without stopping. Without hurrying. Past table after table of staring faces. A waiter rushed up beside him holding out an empty paddle. Callum took it without breaking his stride. On stage, Joella had gone completely still. She was staring at him. Her lips were parted. Her eyes were huge. She looked at him, then her head snapped toward me at the back wall, then back to him. I watched her put the whole thing together. My calm. My smile. My phone in my hand when she walked away. You can’t b

Cavern’s POVOf course he was late. Callum had never been on time for anything in his life. He was late to our own birth. Our mother used to say I came out first, looked around, and waited patiently for him for nine whole minutes, and that this explained everything about both of us.“Two hundred thousand!” Edward announced. “Two hundred, from table four. Do I hear two-twenty?”Gregory Haines raised his paddle again. My hand tightened around the remote so hard the plastic creaked.I wasn’t worried. Not really. I knew my brother. He would come. He always came when it mattered. But that didn’t mean I enjoyed standing at the back of my own charity gala watching men twice her age bid on my—On her.On Joella.I didn’t finish the thought. I didn’t know how it ended yet.Off to my left, I spotted Richard Dunmore at table fifteen. He had his paddle in his hand. He was looking at the stage. His fingers twitched like he was thinking about it.I turned my head and looked at him. That was all. I

When I finally got to my room, I stopped in the doorway and just stared. It was beautiful. Really, genuinely beautiful. The room was spacious and airy, with high ceilings and large windows that looked out over the water. The last light of the evening was painting the Mediterranean in shades of oran

Those blue eyes. God, those blue eyes.Up close, they were even more intense than I'd noticed from across the room. They were the kind of blue you saw in pictures of the Mediterranean—deep and clear and impossibly bright. They held a sharpness to them, an intelligence, like he was taking in everyth

Lia’s POVA real smile, not the annoyed half-smile he usually gave me. His eyes lit up as he looked at her, traveling down her body slowly, taking his time."I don't need anything for now," he said, and his voice was different. Warmer. Friendlier. Flirty, even."Okay, sir," she purred, holding his
