Chapter 47: Why He Did It

Amelia sat frozen on the floor where Ryan had caught her, the phone still glowing in her hand, the words refusing to rearrange themselves into anything that made sense.

"That's not possible," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "My grandfather loved me. He wrote letters trying to protect me. He wouldn't have orchestrated my own divorce."

Amelia's whole body went still. "Who," she said. "Gregory, whatever it is, just say it. I can't do another slow reveal right now. I don't have anything left for that."Gregory sat down heavily across from her, his hands folding together the way they always did when he was steadying himself for something he didn't want to say."Your mother didn't only have an affair with Robert Kingsley," he said. "There was a child."The room went silent except for the hum of the ventilation overhead."A child," Amelia repeated slowly. "You mean I have a sibling.""A half-sibling," Gregory said. "Born a year before you. Given up quietly, arranged through a private adoption your mother handled without telling anyone in either fam

"Say something," Amelia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Gregory, please. Just say something."Gregory didn't move for a long moment, his eyes fixed on the note in her hand like it might disappear if he looked away. When he finally spoke, his voice came out cracked and old, nothing like the composed man who had guided her through board meetings and legal hearings for the past three weeks."Sit down first," he said."I don't want to sit down. I want an answer.""Amelia." His voice broke slightly on her name. "Please. Sit down."She didn't move, her legs locked in place, her whole body braced for whatever was coming. "Tell me it's not true," she said. "Tell me my father is who I've always believed he was."

  • DIVORCE ME, MR. BILLIONAIRE   Chapter 53: Lillian's Mother

Amelia sat on the edge of a worn floral couch in a small house in Brooklyn, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea that had long since gone cold. Across from her sat Rose Brooks, Lillian's mother, a woman in her sixties with tired eyes and hands that hadn't stopped moving since Amelia arrived, folding and unfolding a dish towel like it gave her something to hold onto."I never thought I'd sit across from Whitmore," Rose said quietly. "My mother used to say that name like it left a bad taste in her mouth.""I understand if you don't want to talk to me," Amelia said. "I came because Lillian said there was more to the story. Not to force you into anything."Rose looked up, something sharp flickering behind her exhaustion. "You want to know the truth. Fine. But once I say it, you can't unhear it, and I don'

Gregory was waiting at the door when Amelia arrived, his face pale, a thick folder pressed against his chest like he couldn't quite let go of it."How many," Amelia said, not bothering with a greeting."Eleven," Gregory said. "Eleven names over thirty years. People fired, discredited, blacklisted from their entire industries, because they found something Arthur wanted buried, or simply because they got in his way at the wrong moment."Amelia stepped past him into the office, her legs unsteady beneath her. "You said one of them is close to me."Gregory set the folder down on the desk, his hands trembling as he opened it to a page he'd already marked. "I didn't want to tell you over the phone.""Gregory."

"Say it," Amelia said, her voice barely holding steady. "Whatever name you think I'll recognize, just say it."Damian didn't turn from the window right away. When he finally spoke, his voice had lost some of its earlier confidence, like even he understood the weight of what he was about to hand her."Margaret Brooks," he said.Amelia's breath caught somewhere in her chest. "That's Lillian's grandmother's name.""Yes," Damian said, turning to face her now. "Your best friend's family. Margaret Brooks worked as an accountant for Whitmore Global in its earliest years, back when it was still barely more than warehouses and shipping contracts. She discovered discrepancies in the books long before my grandfather ever raised a complaint. She tried to report them to the board.""And," Amelia said, though some part of her already knew the shape of the answer waiting for her."Arthur fired her within the week," Damian said. "Buried her complaint. Made sure no other company in the city would hire

"You're not going alone," Ryan said the second he read the message over her shoulder."He asked for it alone," Amelia said. "The same way everyone else has asked all week. I'm done letting that scare me off.""That's exactly what worries me," Gregory said. "Amelia, this man spent fifty years wanting revenge for something his grandfather lost. That's not a person who plays fair just because you show up with confidence.""I'm not asking any of you to agree," Amelia said. "I'm telling you what I'm doing."Ryan crossed his arms, jaw tight. "Then I'll be outside the building. Not in the room. Not visible. But close enough that if something goes wrong, I'm not fifteen minutes away."
