Elena finished her tea, tucked the drive and tablet back into her inner pocket, and paid the waitress with a twenty-dollar bill from her purse. It was nearly 1:00 AM.

She stepped out of the diner and turned down the narrow service alleyway that cut through to the subway station on 4th Street. The alley was dark, illuminated only by the faint orange glow of a single security lamp high above a loading dock.

She had only taken ten steps when the sharp beams of high-intensity LED headlights blinded her from the end of the alley.

A heavy, unmarked black SUV pulled sharply into the alley entrance, blocking her path to the main street. Before she could turn back toward the diner, the low rumble of another engine echoed behind her as a second vehicle backed in from the opposite side, trapping her in the middle.

The side doors of the lead SUV hissed open. Three tall men wearing rainproof tactical coats stepped out into the pouring rain. Their movements were coordinated, fast, and quiet.

Julian had discovered the missing server logs faster than she had anticipated. The moment she signed those papers and walked out, his automated security protocol must have detected the missing backup key.

The lead security officer—a heavy-set man with a scar running through his left eyebrow—stepped forward, his leather boots splashing through the water puddles.

"Mrs. Sterling," the man said, his voice flat and hard over the sound of rain. "Mr. Sterling sent us to retrieve his private property. You took something from his study that doesn't belong to you."

Elena backed up until her shoulders hit the cold, damp brick wall of the warehouse behind her. Her hand instinctively pressed against her chest, protecting the drive inside her coat.

"I don't have anything that belongs to Julian," she said, her voice remaining surprisingly firm despite the panic pounding in her ribs. "I left everything in his apartment. Check the security cameras."

"Don't make this difficult," the scarred man said, taking another step closer. "We know about the drive. We know you accessed the server at 11:15 PM before you signed the agreement. Hand over the physical storage media, and you get to board your train."

"And if I don't?" Elena asked.

The man reached into his coat, pulling out a compact, silenced sidearm. He held it low against his thigh, out of sight from the main street, but fully visible to her.

"Mr. Sterling instructed us to clear the file," he said simply. "He didn't specify whether you needed to be conscious when we retrieved it."

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribcage. She looked to the left—a padlocked security gate. To the right—two heavy metal dumpsters. She was completely pinned.

"I'll count to three," the man growled, raising the weapon slightly. "One..."

Before he could reach two, the violent screech of high-performance tires tore through the alleyway.

A massive, matte-black armored Maybach pulled a high-speed J-turn off the main street, mounting the curb and slamming violently into the side of the lead SUV. The impact was deafening—metal crumpled, glass shattered into thousands of glistening fragments, and the lead guard was tossed sideways onto the hood of his own car.

The rear passenger door of the Maybach clicked open with a smooth, mechanical hiss.

"Get in!" a deep, quiet, commanding voice echoed from the shadowed interior. "Now!"

Elena didn't waste a split second. She lunged forward, dove into the spacious back seat of the Maybach, and pulled her legs inside just as a silenced gunshot pinged off the armored door frame with a sharp clink.

The Maybach’s heavy door slammed shut automatically. The driver hit the accelerator, the twin-turbo V12 engine roaring as the heavy vehicle shoved the wrecked SUV aside and burst out into the night traffic.

Designed as an offshore archive and refuge for independent marine scholars, cartographers, and maritime poets, the station had been blockaded for weeks by the Horizon Syndicate's aggressive corporate cruisers. As *The Albatross* drew within visual range, two sleek patrol craft bearing the insignia of the Horizon Syndicate detached from the syndicate's mothership and cut across the water, attempting to establish an unlawful exclusion zone.
