"So," Daniel said, smiling. "Lydia told me you're a single mom.”
Lydia and Theo have become a problem.
Not a bad problem, but a problem nonetheless. They decided, somewhere between my healing body and Arya's first birthday, that I needed to get back out there.
Whatever that means.
At first I th
AURORA It was almost impossible to see a house without a blanket of fresh snow on its roof. The streets were quiet, and most of the shops closed early for the celebration preparation, the only sounds were the crunch of boots on fresh powder and the distant jingle of bells from somewhere down the block. I walked to the corner store to buy batteries for Arya's new toy, a little singing elephant that I was sure would drive me crazy by New Year's, and the lights for the Christmas tree. The store was almost empty. A few people stood in line, their arms full of last-minute gifts. I grabbed a pack of batteries, some cookies and was about heading to the register when I saw a familiar face.Jeremiah was standing by the display of wrapping paper, holding a roll of red and gold foil. He looked up as I approached, his face breaking into a warm smile."Ms Vale," he said. "What a pleasant surprise."I blinked. "Mr. Webb. I didn't expect to see you here.""Please, call me Jeremiah." He set down th
AURORA I left Arya with Mrs. Bayer and Maria. It was the first time I'd left her with anyone other than Lydia, and my hands were shaking as I strapped her into the car seat. I already kissed her five times. Maybe six. Maria was watching me with an amused smile."Go," she said. "She'll be fine. We've got this."I looked at her one more time, strapped in, chewing on her teething ring. She was growing so fast I could barely keep up. She looked back at me with her big dark eyes, like she was wondering why I was hovering."I'll be back in a few hours," I said."She'll still be here," Mrs. Bayer said from the doorway. "We're not going anywhere."I nodded and finally forced myself to walk away.I stopped a taxi at the front and got in.We soon arrived at the venue. It was a building owned by the school too, and as I've heard, they've got many in different states and cities. It was cold, the hallways echoing with the sound of footsteps and distant voices. I found the classroom and slipped i

They decided, somewhere between my healing body and Arya's first birthday, that I needed to get back out there.Whatever that means. At first I thought, well, it's Lydia. What is she without jokes like these. But then started texting me screenshots of men from dating apps, asking which ones I thought were cute.I ignored her, of course, thinking she'd get bored but she didn't. And then she roped Theo in even though they barely know each other, and both started sending me links to local events and coffee shops, anything he thought might help me meet new people.Although I told them both
AURORA I woke up and immediately tried to stand, forgetting about my ankle. The pain shot through me and I gasped, grabbing the edge of the couch to steady myself. I looked down at my foot, still swollen and purple.Arya started crying from her crib. I grabbed the crutches and hobbled over, each step awkward and unsteady. I reached the crib and lifted her out, balancing her on my good hip while trying to keep my weight off the bad foot. She was screaming, her face red, her little fists waving."Okay, okay, I'm here," I said, carrying her to the couch. I sat down heavily and unbuttoned my shirt to feed her. She latched on and quieted.Lydia came down the stairs with a tray of food and set it on the table. She looked at me, then at the crutches on the floor."You okay?""Fine.""You don't look fine.""I am, don't worry."She picked up the crutches and leaned them against the wall. "I'm going to run to the store. Mrs. Bayer is upstairs if you need anything.""I don't need anything."She
AURORA I balanced Arya against my shoulder with one hand and gripped the railing with the other, my foot searching for the next step. She was fussing, her little body squirming, and her face scrunched up like she was about to start crying. I bounced her gently, trying to calm her down as I made my way up."Shh, shh. We're almost there, baby. Just a few more steps."I wanted to get some fresh air, to sit outside in the diner for a few minutes. The basement was starting to feel small for days nows. Even the TV can't help. I needed to see the sky, feel the sun on my face, to remember there was a world outside these concrete walls and not turn into a caveman. My foot landed on the last step but somehow I misjudged the distance, and my toes caught the edge of the concrete. I felt myself falling as time slowed down. I twisted my body, my arms curling around Arya, pulling her into my chest as my back hit the ground first, then my head my ankle twisting under me.The pain shot up my leg like
"I can't do this."The laptop sat open on the table, the screen glowing with a lecture I paused forty minutes ago. I kept trying to watch it since Arya fell asleep, but every time I hit play, she stirred or cried or needed to be fed. I was still in my pajamas, my hair unwashed, a burp cloth thrown over my shoulder like a badge of honor. After giving birth, it felt like I was thrown five hundred steps behind on my classes. I missed so much material, so many lessons, that I didn't even know where to start anymore. The first few weeks after Arya came home were a blur of feeding and changing and surviving, and my coursework just piled up in the background. I had four lectures to catch up on in Constitutional Law alone, two assignments overdue for Legal Writing, and a reading list that seemed to grow longer every time I opened my email. I kept telling myself I'd get to it, that I'd find time, but time was something I didn't have anymore. Every spare moment went to Arya, and the spare momen
AURORAI knew she was right. Every word she said was true and logical and practical, and I hated her a little for saying them out loud because they were the same thoughts that had been rattling around in my own head since the doctor spoke.
Aurora's POV Damien’s hands paused briefly against his shirt buttons. For one foolish second, hope filled my chest Maybe he felt guilty. Maybe somewhere deep down, there was still something between us.Then he continued unbuttoning his shirt calmly.“Love,” he repeated coldly. “Is the last thing
Aurora's POV The next morning, I woke up with a pounding headache. My eyes burned painfully from crying all night. For a few seconds, I stared blankly at the ceiling, silently hoping everything that happened yesterday had only been another terrible dream. But reality settled in quickly.Damien che
Aurora's POVI felt my heart sink down at that sound. I took one look at Ray and his face was totally pale and drained of colours. Was this why he didn't want me to give Damien his food myself? Was this why Damien was working late?No.. no. I didn't want to think about it. My marriage was already s
