MONIQUE

I swallowed, staring at Ryan.

Then, all of a sudden, a smile appeared on his face as he stepped farther into the room. He came closer, holding both my arms, his touch light but firm.

“Are you feeling any better?” he asked.

“Ah?” I mumbled, a little confused, still dizzy and dazed, wondering if he had seen the phone, if he had seen me hiding it or if he had noticed something was wrong.

“The pills,” he said, nodding toward the bedside table. “I told the maid to bring them up to you. Take them. They’ll help with the headache and fight off the remnants of what you took yesterday.”

“You mean what you.....when you drugged me?” I asked quietly.

But he brushed that off easily, as if I hadn’t spoken at all. His eyes moved to the table, to the untouched glass of water and the white pills still sitting there.

“Come on,” he said. “Take them. The police have already arrived. Just drink the pills, have something to eat, and then come downstairs. I already told them you are here, that you we

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Hope You're Right

MONIQUEWhen we get back inside, I quickly get changed, and I hurry downstairs to Marcus’s office to see if he’s phoned his friend, if they talked, and to see what’s going on.I knock, and when his voice calls me in, I push the door open. He’s still on the phone. He raises a hand, telling me two minutes, so I sit down and wait.“Okay, we are on our way,” he says before hanging up.Then he turns toward me.“So… what did he say?” I ask immediately.“Okay,” he begins, leaning back slightly. “He’s agreed to take you as a client. Even though he has a huge case going on right now, I called in a favour. He’s personally going to take care of your case. And since this is going to turn out to be a public case, it’s going to be the state against Ryan, so he’ll mostly be assisting the public prosecutor who ends up handling it. But...” He points a finger lightly for emphasis. “He told me he’s going to be with you every step of the way. He’ll guide you, advise you, everything you'll need. He’s got

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Yes

MONIQUEI didn't even have to think about it,“Yes. Yes. And yes again. How many times do I have to tell you for you to understand?”“Well, it just surprises me that you didn’t talk to me about any of this. When I met you this morning, you told me you were just going in search of Marcus so you could know where to start. Suddenly, I see your father’s lawyer coming to the house, and then I hear that you’re getting a divorce. What is this really about? What is going on? I’m only trying to save you. I don’t want you to run into the arms of another Ryan. I want you to take your time. It doesn’t matter if you don’t divorce him today and you divorce him tomorrow, but I want you to do it with a clear head....not to go from one relationship to another.”It’s my turn to take a deep breath.“I know what you’re saying, Auntie. I’m listening. I hear you, and I’m doing exactly what you’re saying, I will take my time with everything... Except when it comes to the divorce. I can do all of that when I

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Aren't You

MONIQUEI quickly walk back toward Marcus.“No, no, no, no, no, no. What are you saying? I want the divorce. I do NOT want to be married to Ryan. Please don’t think I’m doing this because it was your idea. I do not want to be married to that horrible disgusting man. Who would want to be married to him? Of course, I want to get divorced.”“Are you sure?” he asks softly. “Because your aunt kind of used some crazy big words.”“I guess she’s scared. And she cares about me.” I tell him the truth.“Okay,” he says finally. Although he doesn't look convinced.“I’m going to go upstairs and talk to her while you talk to your lawyer friend,” I say, hoping to ease his doubts.“Okay,” he murmurs, leaning forward to kiss me, soft, reassuring, grounding. A kiss I didn’t realise I needed.I walk out of Marcus’s office with a bright smile on my face, but the moment I start climbing the stairs to find my aunt, the smile fades, and the anger starts rising inside me.Because what the hell was Aunt Jane t

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   A Lot To Say

MONIQUEFor a moment, I just stand there, staring at the closed office door, as if it might swing back open and Mr Smith will walk in again and finish what we started. My mind is running—no, sprinting—trying to catch up with everything that just happened.I run a hand through my hair. I’m not sure what stings more: the disappointment I saw in his eyes, or the fact that he thinks I trust Marcus more than I trust him.And maybe… maybe he’s right.I let out a long breath. Everything feels tangled, twisted, upside down. I only wanted to read the damn paper before I signed anything. I only wanted to understand. After everything Ryan did to me, how am I supposed to just sign anything without looking? How is that unreasonable? But now it feels like I disappointed Mr Smith just by being careful. Great! Another person I’ve let down today.I take a step forward, ready to go after him, maybe to fix it, maybe to explain, but before I even reach the door, there’s a soft knock. My heart jumps. I qu

MONIQUEI nod slowly. “Okay.”Mr Smith leans back a little. “Alright. Now, if you’re completely sure, and if everything Marcus told me is right, then we can open a case against him before we deal with the divorce. We will open a case against Ryan for keeping you against your will, about his kidnapping your aunt, about his assaulting you, and about threatening you. We can take him to court for all of that.”“Would that help me with my divorce?” I ask immediately. “Because the last thing I want to do is get anywhere close to him and try to pretend I’m trying to work out our marriage.”“We will do so,” he answers, “we will file for your divorce, but I think first we should deal with all the criminal stuff. We should go to the police. You should file your case, let the police investigate the issue, and as they do, then we will file the divorce and use it as the reason....as the basis for divorce.”I breathe out. He continues:“And it will also help get us a quicker divorce process. Altho

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Are You Sure

MONIQUEI don’t know why, but my eyes automatically go towards Marcus. I look at him, and he gives me an understanding nod. I hear my aunt coughing beside me. When I turn towards her, I ask her "What?," and she shakes her head in total disappointment.I decide to take back my attention towards Mr Smith, who is still waiting for an answer.I nod. “Of course,”Mr Smith turns towards Marcus.“You don’t mind if we use your office?”“Of course. No problem.” Marcus replies.Marcus stands up and gives my hand a quick reassuring squeeze before letting go and walking out of the office. My aunt watches him until he disappears through the door, then turns to Mr Smith.“Can I talk to my niece for a second?”Mr Smith looks confused for a moment.“No, Aunt. I will talk to you later,” I cut in quickly. “Mr Smith is on a tight schedule. He has things to do. I’ll talk to him, and then I’ll come see you later and we’ll talk all about it.”She gives me a look, that look, and then she says, “I hope yo
