Anne-Marie’s P.O.V

“Mommy?”

The poly bag slips from my grip as I turn my head to my little girl. She holds up her stuffed rabbit, walking toward me with legs so tiny, and wearing only her diaper. She’s taken off her top again.

“Mommy, see… dirty… dirty…”

Turning completely, I reach for the rabbit.

“No,” she frowns, withdrawing her hand to hug her toy. “No.”

“Let me see it so I can clean it up for you.”

She mumbles gibberish and backs away.

“But–”

My door slowly creaks open, and my eyes flick up

Memphis’s P.O.VEverything goes quiet inside of me. And I choke up, “T–two years ago?”“Yeah,” Marcus answers, nodding. “Her mom got into an accident, and I happened to be driving back to the hotel we stayed at when we went to New Jersey for that game you were invited to, and the conference Dad and I had to attend. Remember? It happened right in front of my car.”My mind splits in half. I shut my eyes for a second and pull away from him, shaking my head as it puts two and two together. My fingers dig into my hair, raking it backward.“Are you sure you’re okay, Big Guy?”I exhale deeply; it’s a shaky one. My hands are also shaking on my head. I want to tell him I’m okay, but my wobbling legs force me to drop into a squat.“Memphis?” Marcus calls out, concern lacing his voice.I lift my lids and head, staring up at him, looking into his worry-filled eyes. “What’s up with you?” His brows curve with concern. “You’ve been so out of it.”A deep breath slips out of me. “She had a panic atta

Memphis’s P.O.VMy heart races with terror, my eyes unable to move on from her, … unconscious in his arms.“Memphis!” Marcus yells at me, his brows furrowing.I snap out of my head. A foul word escapes my lips as I shove my trembling fingers through my hair and turn, jogging toward my friends. On my way, I bend over, snatch my jacket from the floor, and keep moving. “Everybody, get back inside!”“What’s happening?” Norman shouts.“Nothing. Get back inside!” I growl, flicking my eyes to Clarissa’s questioning gaze for a moment before repeating myself. “Keep partying! Nothing’s happening.”Slowly and with murmurs, they start to troop back inside. My head pounds like a volcano erupted inside it. Shaking my head and cursing, I move toward them, still gesturing for them to go inside. The blue gift bag on the floor steals my attention. My chest tightens, and sluggishly, I bend over to pick it up with the shiny handle.Voices rise again. I lift my head and see everyone still standing and tho

Memphis’s P.O.VRap music blasts from the speakers, ear-splitting. College mates and friends dance, drink, make out, and play games all around me. Drinking an exquisitely tasting cocktail from a red cup, I refresh the school’s breaking news page for the hundredth time. Still nothing. I check my emails and messages. Nothing. Nothing from Mr. Snape, too. My jaw ticks. It’s been over twenty-four hours since we were meant to get an official response from the Office of Sports and Athletics regarding our protest. Mr. Snape assured me that we were finally getting what we wanted. It’s my birthday; I should be partying and drinking like there’s no tomorrow, but I’m here losing my fu–ing mind because silence is never good news. Slipping my phone into my pocket, I purse my lips and exhale with worry before raising my head to meet Avan and Norman’s questioning gazes. Hope and expectations fill their eyes. With another sigh, I shake my head in response.“Shit,” they say at the same time, slappin

Marcus’s P.O.VHer brows snap together for a second as she hesitates. But she says, “Twenty-four.”“I’m twenty-eight.”She nods.“I can’t promise that I’ll cut you off… I think I’ll still text you, call you, and be tempted to come see you here, but I promise not to show up unannounced. When I want to send the second text, I promise to stop myself.”A corner of her lips twitches as if she’d smile, but she doesn’t. And I give myself a mission—a mission to get her to smile. Until then, I think I’ll keep coming back.“Promise to call me if you need help with anything. Anything at all.”She nods. “I will… Thank you.”I buckle my seat belt, start the car, and we hit the road. My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing in the center console. I ignore it, stealing glances at her while she looks out the window or stares at her phone.A highly coveted billboard comes into view, and her eyes stay glued to it longer than any other thing she’s been staring at until we drive past it. On it was an image announc

Marcus’s P.O.VMy breath ceases, my eyes completely glued to her once she’s out of the building, wearing a short pink dress, a dark jacket, short white socks, and white sneakers. Her ginger hair – rich, long, full, and curly – bounces with every move she makes. My hand goes up, and her head whips in my direction.Just as she ran toward my car on that unfortunate night, as I gave her directions, tonight, she runs toward me again, straight into… my heart. ‘Don’t run,’ I want to say, but she seems to move in slow motion. I blink once, my lips spreading into a smile as I enjoy it. Her legs are long, strong, and athletic. A small white purse hangs on her left arm. In her right hand, she holds a little blue gift bag. Must be that big guy’s birthday present. Her perfume hits me before she gets to me. And when she finally stops,“Anne-Marie.” Her name rolls off my tongue as I’m mesmerized by her beauty. Her green eyes steal my thoughts for a moment; I just stare at her made-up face. Her freck

Barbara and Diana have their heads poking in as their eyes sweep over me with delight.“What’s that?” Diana asks, her eyes shifting to my closet. Before I can utter a word, they burst into my room. Ignoring them, I turn to my baby, scanning her toy for dirt. I see a light-brown dust smear on the rabbit’s head and stretch a hand to take it from her.“Noooo,” she whines, taking tiny steps back. And in a second, she turns away from me and runs toward Beatrice. “Aun Betice, Mommy is… is…”B
