Chapter 2

Author: Sunflower
Evelyn looked soft and fragile, like a pure white jasmine flower drifting down from the sky.

The first time she walked into our classroom and introduced herself, Matthias could not take his eyes off her.

Her family situation was not great either. She only had a disabled father at home. Maybe it was that unspoken bond between people who struggled, but Matthias and Evelyn quickly grew close.

Evelyn could never keep up with the lessons. She would carry test papers covered in red X's, sit beside Matthias, and ask timidly, "Matthias, may I ask you something?"

Every time, he would take the paper and patiently explain everything step by step. There was none of the impatience he showed when he tutored me.

Once, after Evelyn ranked dead last in a physics exam, she lay her head on her desk and cried. Matthias pushed her deskmate aside and sat next to her, quietly keeping her company, handing her tissues again and again without a hint of annoyance.

By evening, a neatly organized summary of basic concepts appeared on Evelyn's desk, packed with notes.

Everyone said Matthias and Evelyn looked perfect together. My presence only made things awkward.

However, that was not why I refused them.

Three days before Matthias planned to bring Evelyn to my house, I accidentally overheard a conversation in the bathroom.

"Evelyn, Matthias treats you differently. Are you two together?"

Evelyn let out a mocking laugh, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

"Have you seen how poor he is? Do I look like I'm done enjoying a good life? He's just a free tutor to me."

"Wow, seriously? Wendy has to pay to get him to tutor her."

"Please. With Wendy's brain, what will she learn anyway? Just wait. Sooner or later, I will take Matthias away from her completely."

Back then, I stood inside the bathroom stall, shaking with anger as I listened.

At the time, Matthias treated Evelyn with almost devout care. It was senior year, and I was afraid telling him would affect his mood, so I kept it to myself.

I only hinted there and then that he should stay away from her.

So, when he asked to bring Evelyn to my house for tutoring, I refused without hesitation.

Evelyn ran out of my house crying. At the intersection, she failed to notice the traffic light and got hit by a car. One of her legs was left permanently disabled.

Matthias, his eyes red, pointed at me and blamed me.

Behind the scenes, he wove a net so tight I had no way out.

Everything I did turned into a joke of self-sacrifice, paid for with my entire youth and even my life.

Then, I finally understood something.

I should let go of my urge to save others and respect their fate.

When I refused, Matthias immediately got worked up.

"Tutoring you alone is tutoring. Why can't I bring Evelyn along, too?

"This is a critical stage in our studies. Can you stop being so selfish?"

He glared at me, aggressive and pressing, making me question my judgment back then.

In high school, Matthias had excellent grades and a proud personality, but he was so poor he could barely afford food. I did not even like studying, yet I paid him a high tutoring fee and asked him to help me. I did that just to protect his pride.

After graduation, I brought him into my dad's company as an intern and even pulled strings to make him a project manager.

After we got married, I handed the entire company over to him.

Even after all that, he still wanted me dead.

So, how could I possibly make the same mistake again?

Evelyn chimed in too, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

She gently tugged at the corner of my sleeve, her lips trembling as large tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Wendy, if I can't get into college, my dad will force me to marry early.

"Please, just think of it as saving my life, okay? I will repay you for the rest of my life."

The impact was too strong. They kept rolling until Matthias's back slammed hard against a rock, forcing them to stop. That same day, he was rushed to the hospital. The initial diagnosis was a spinal fracture. From then on, he probably would not be able to do any heavy labor. The school sent Derrick and me as student representatives to visit him, carrying a fruit basket. Before we even reached the room, we could hear arguing from inside.Matthias lay there with bandages wrapped around his waist, struggling to lift his upper body. He clutched Evelyn's arm, refusing to let her leave.Evelyn looked at him with clear disgust, trying to shake him off but failing."Matthias, how many times do I have to say it before you understand? We're over."His voice was hoarse as he asked, "What about our future? Didn't we say we'd always be together?""Future?" Evelyn let out an icy laugh. "What can you even give me now? Look at yourself. You might not even have a future."Matthias still held o

Evelyn's grades were still at the bottom, just like always. However, Matthias's drop was shocking.I had climbed 15 places. He had fallen 15.Then, he was only two ranks ahead of me.People were already looking at him differently, whispering with regret about the fall of a former top student.Matthias sat at his desk with his head lowered, a dark aura hanging over him.Suddenly…Crack! The pen in his hand snapped in two.…Soon, it was time for Derrick's competition exam.As a responsible student, I personally walked him to the entrance of the test center."Check your stuff again. Make sure you didn't forget anything," I said, reminding him.Derrick casually opened his file folder and showed me. "All set. See?"That check nearly gave us a heart attack. His admission ticket had been swapped out for a blank sheet of paper."What the hell? Which idiot did this?" Derrick shouted.Luckily, I had been worried something like this might happen, so I had printed extra copies in a

A genius was valuable, sure. However, our school had never been short on geniuses. Judging by what Matthias was doing then, he was acting more like an idiot than anything else. From that day on, Matthias really did stop attending classes and stayed home with Evelyn. However, instead of softening the teachers, his actions turned him into a joke among the students."Matthias actually stopped coming to school for Evelyn. That's so romantic!""Romantic? It's senior year. This is just insane.""I saw him after school the other day. He was in an alley with Evelyn and a bunch of sketchy guys, smoking.""No way. Has the former top student fallen that far?""He hasn't been to class in forever. I wonder if he can still keep his genius title.""The mock exams are coming up soon. I'm so nervous."Derrick poked me from the side. "So, mock exams. Feeling confident?"Of course, I was. Even if I felt a little nervous inside, I could not show it.I answered seriously, "Don't worry, Coach. I'l

The moment I heard that familiar voice, I almost burst into tears from relief. "Derrick! Derrick, I'm locked inside!"Derrick tried the door from the outside. It would not budge. "Don't panic. Wait here. I'll go get the janitor for the keys."Just then, thunder cracked loudly across the sky. A second later, the classroom lights went out all at once."Ah!" I screamed, covering my ears as I crouched down on the floor.Derrick had only taken a couple of steps away when he heard me. He ran back immediately and, without thinking, kicked the door open.Dim emergency lights from the hallway spilled into the room."Come on." Derrick held out his hand to me.It was still raining outside. We shared one umbrella as we walked, neither of us speaking. The silence felt awkward."Were you here to grab something?" I blurted out, just to say something.Derrick held up the book in his hand. It turned out to be a math competition workbook. He laughed a little. "Kind of embarrassing, but I staye

Over time, the two of them actually started dating. In my previous life, to help Matthias do well on his exams, I bought him an endless supply of supplements. Whatever practice papers or materials he needed, I never once said no.In the end, Matthias got into Kingswell University just like he wanted, yet he credited everything to his talent.I was honestly curious whether this so-called genius could really balance love and studying at the same time. One day, I walked into the water fountain to fill my bottle and accidentally caught them kissing. Matthias had his back to me, bent slightly as he wrapped Evelyn tightly in his arms, his whole presence calm and restrained. Evelyn looked at me over his shoulder, her eyes glistening. She even let out a soft, deliberate murmur and raised her brows at me.Unfortunately for them, that same day, the dean caught Matthias and Evelyn together. Our homeroom teacher stormed off with Matthias to the office. Even from far away, I could hear him si
