Chapter 3

Penulis: Tightrope
"Lucas!"

A woman's excited voice shattered Ariel's thoughts.

Before she could react, the woman brushed past her and threw herself straight into Lucas' broad chest. He caught her out of habit, letting her cling to him without resistance.

"Do you know how long I've been waiting for you? If you weren't released soon, my dad was going to force me into an arranged marriage!"

Lucas studied the woman's face while responding to her eager kiss. A smirk played at his lips. "Are you that desperate? Tell your driver to step out for a moment. I'll give your dad a grand gift."

The woman pouted playfully but clung to him. "Don't be naughty! My dad wants me to bring you home. He said he wants to meet you. He even planned a welcome-back dinner."

Ariel felt like her feet were nailed to the ground. She stared blankly at the scene before her.

The delayed sting of embarrassment and helplessness set in.

The Lucas she had known—the one who had always been gentle and thoughtful and who had centered his world around her—felt like nothing more than a dream from the past ten years.

A dull pain began to stir in her stomach.

It was as if a knife from the past had traveled through time and struck her all over again.

"Ari, I don't want to be a Sanderson. I don't want to be your brother. Will you marry me when you grow up?"

His warm voice echoed in her mind, making Ariel momentarily dizzy.

"Watch out!"

A sharp voice jolted Ariel back to reality. She turned in time to see a motorcycle speeding toward Lucas and that woman.

Without hesitation, Lucas pulled the woman into his arms, shielding her completely.

Meanwhile, Ariel stumbled back, covering her face in a panic. In her haste, she twisted her ankle.

"Are you…" Lucas turned to look at her. His deep gaze flickered with scrutiny and a hint of panic.

"I'm fine." Before the tears could fall, Ariel turned and ran.

The woman tilted her head curiously. "Who was that?"

Lucas hesitated for a moment before pinching her chin and kissing her lightly. "Looked like someone I used to know."

Someone he used to know…

The person he grew up with for over a decade and the one he once promised to marry was just someone he used to know.

Ariel hurried back to her car. Clutching her aching stomach, she leaned against the steering wheel and gasped for breath. Cold sweat broke out in layers across her skin.

She couldn't tell if the pain in her chest was worse or the illness that was eating away at her.

Her thoughts were cut off by the sudden ringing of her phone.

She glanced at the screen. It was Colton.

At Bluum Corp, Colton frowned as he received the document Ariel had sent.

They worked in the same building. What was she trying to pull? Was this her way of getting Jayson's attention, since she wasn't allowed near the CEO's office?

How childish.

Annoyed, Colton marched straight to the PR department only to be told that Ariel wasn't in today.

The day was already hectic. He frowned deeper and called Ariel. "Ms. Walker, I don't know what game you're playing, but get back to the office immediately."

Ariel's eyes darkened.

This must be about Jayson. Had he already seen the divorce papers and wanted to talk?

That was the only possibility she could think of.

Without hesitation, she turned the car around and headed straight for Bluum Corp.

When Colton saw Ariel rushing in, his suspicions were confirmed. She hadn't changed—still seeking special attention from Jayson. Colton could barely hide the mockery on his face.

"Where is he?" Ariel's face was pale.

She still needed to pick up her medication from the hospital. She was still considering her treatment. Once she started chemotherapy, it would be hard to hide from her grandmother, Katie Taylor, and uncle, Leonard Walker.

"This is Bluum Corp, Ms. Walker. You expect Mr. Larkin to come down personally just to see you?" Colton's tone was all business. "He has something for you to handle."

"Is it about the div—"

"There was some negative press surrounding Ms. Stanton's birthday celebration last night. People are questioning whether she stole someone else's man. Ms. Stanton isn't just anyone. She's about to become the face of Bluum Corp's key project. We can't afford any scandals tarnishing her image.

"Mr. Larkin requested that you handle it. Make sure Ms. Stanton's name is cleared and shut down the rumors."

Nancy paused for a beat. Her eyes darkened before she said flatly, "She's not in my league when it comes to the competition. Whether she can even make it to the third test is another question."And when it comes to Jayson, she doesn't stand a chance against me. The only thing she's holding on to is the title of Mrs. Larkin. Once this competition ends, the Larkins will naturally make their choice."Sarah caught on immediately. Nancy didn't need her help just yet."Alright then, focus on getting ready. Even if Mrs. Nielsen has her doubts about me, her son has always cared for you. If you need help, he won't just stand by." Sarah herself was hoping it wouldn't come to that.Nancy rose and headed upstairs. "I know."…Ariel soon got the notice. She was to check in at the designated hotel the next day. The third test would last three days, during which they would all have to stay at the same hotel and follow the arrangements. The venue was Eldoria's largest and most prestigious nati

As long as that man carried no disease and wouldn't become a burden to Ariel, she had no reason to dwell on what was already done and couldn't be undone. Adults like them had plenty of real issues to face. No one would spend too much time worrying about a fleeting encounter with a stranger.Ariel decided to take a bath to help herself relax a little. She prepared the water, undressed, and was about to step into the tub when she lowered her head and noticed something.Beside the scar on her lower abdomen was a faint, almost unnoticeable hickey. Her fair skin made even the lightest marks stand out.She had checked her chest and neck earlier that morning and found nothing except for a few alcohol-induced rashes. It was almost as if last night had been nothing more than a dream. But now, seeing that faint mark by her scar, Ariel froze. Her eyes clouded with confusion.…Nancy went home alone since Jayson was busy with work. Even so, she was still in high spirits.Sarah noticed h

Ariel furrowed her brows. Her thoughts were in a mess again. She turned to Janice. "You were in my room? Are you sure you didn't remember it wrongly?"After all, Janice had drunk quite a bit last night.Chad glanced at them through the rearview mirror. "What's this? You two got so wasted last night that your memories aren't adding up now?"Janice straightened her back. "That's impossible! I might have gotten wasted last night, but I'm sober now. I even checked the room number before leaving this morning. There's no way I'd still be seeing or thinking wrong after sobering up."Hands on her hips, Janice narrowed her eyes at Ariel. "Ari, you didn't come back to your room last night. Where did you sleep?"Ariel was speechless. Something felt wrong. She was sure she hadn't misread the numbers and that she had gone into her own room."Where else would I be?" Ariel leaned back against her seat. "Did you see anyone entering my room yesterday?"Janice was puzzled. "How would I know? I w

Jayson kept his eyes on Ariel as he walked toward her.The moment he drew closer, Ariel instinctively took a step back. A flicker of repulsion crossed her gaze.Jayson noticed. He stopped almost immediately, his stare locking onto Ariel's face as though searching for answers. For a moment, it felt as if an invisible wall had risen between them. After a few seconds, Jayson let the reaction slide. His gaze dropped to her wrist, where a small patch of rashes, no larger than a fingernail, had appeared. His tone was still the same. "Remember to apply some ointment once you're home. Be careful about what you eat and drink next time."With nothing further to add, Jayson walked past her and went inside.Ariel massaged the center of her brows before following him in.Later, Jayson crossed paths with Nancy. She greeted him with a bright smile. "Jayson, do you want to come over to my place for lunch later?"He glanced toward the direction she had come from. "I don't think I can. I need t

Ariel clearly didn't want to talk about what had happened the night before.Cecilia studied Ariel for a while and decided not to press her for details. In any case, Cecilia felt her plan had worked. She had chosen the perfect time and occasion, arranging everything to make it happen. Under such circumstances, all that was needed was the right spark to bring a man and a woman together.Ariel excused herself and went to the restroom. What happened last night was an accident. She couldn't recall much of what happened. The only things etched in her memory were the darkness that cloaked the room and the searing heat of that person's hands as they gripped her wrists.Something inside her had unraveled then. She had wriggled free, wrapped her arms around the person's neck, and made the first move.Since she had made the first move, Ariel could not entirely blame the other party for what had happened. Even so, she thought her condition at that time was strange. She hadn't intended to m

"It's nothing. Let's sit over there." Ariel pointed in a direction far from where Jayson was.She did not spare Jayson another glance as she walked over to the table next to the window. However, Ariel couldn't control the thoughts that were going through her head.Even after she and Samson had taken their seats, Jayson remained in his seat without doing much. While her suspicions grew stronger, Ariel maintained a neutral expression. She didn't think it was a big deal if the person from last night was Jayson. They had been married for three years, so another night together wouldn't make a difference. After all, she wasn't someone who would let herself be bound by old, outdated values."Are you feeling cold? Do you need a jacket?" Samson glanced at the thin, knitted cardigan Ariel was wearing. The temperature in that region was a bit low. He pointed to his clothes."You can wear mine if you don't mind.""It's fine. That won't be necessary." Ariel had a dubious look in her eyes as
