Chapter 3

작가: Tightrope
"Lucas!"

A woman's excited voice shattered Ariel's thoughts.

Before she could react, the woman brushed past her and threw herself straight into Lucas' broad chest. He caught her out of habit, letting her cling to him without resistance.

"Do you know how long I've been waiting for you? If you weren't released soon, my dad was going to force me into an arranged marriage!"

Lucas studied the woman's face while responding to her eager kiss. A smirk played at his lips. "Are you that desperate? Tell your driver to step out for a moment. I'll give your dad a grand gift."

The woman pouted playfully but clung to him. "Don't be naughty! My dad wants me to bring you home. He said he wants to meet you. He even planned a welcome-back dinner."

Ariel felt like her feet were nailed to the ground. She stared blankly at the scene before her.

The delayed sting of embarrassment and helplessness set in.

The Lucas she had known—the one who had always been gentle and thoughtful and who had centered his world around her—felt like nothing more than a dream from the past ten years.

A dull pain began to stir in her stomach.

It was as if a knife from the past had traveled through time and struck her all over again.

"Ari, I don't want to be a Sanderson. I don't want to be your brother. Will you marry me when you grow up?"

His warm voice echoed in her mind, making Ariel momentarily dizzy.

"Watch out!"

A sharp voice jolted Ariel back to reality. She turned in time to see a motorcycle speeding toward Lucas and that woman.

Without hesitation, Lucas pulled the woman into his arms, shielding her completely.

Meanwhile, Ariel stumbled back, covering her face in a panic. In her haste, she twisted her ankle.

"Are you…" Lucas turned to look at her. His deep gaze flickered with scrutiny and a hint of panic.

"I'm fine." Before the tears could fall, Ariel turned and ran.

The woman tilted her head curiously. "Who was that?"

Lucas hesitated for a moment before pinching her chin and kissing her lightly. "Looked like someone I used to know."

Someone he used to know…

The person he grew up with for over a decade and the one he once promised to marry was just someone he used to know.

Ariel hurried back to her car. Clutching her aching stomach, she leaned against the steering wheel and gasped for breath. Cold sweat broke out in layers across her skin.

She couldn't tell if the pain in her chest was worse or the illness that was eating away at her.

Her thoughts were cut off by the sudden ringing of her phone.

She glanced at the screen. It was Colton.

At Bluum Corp, Colton frowned as he received the document Ariel had sent.

They worked in the same building. What was she trying to pull? Was this her way of getting Jayson's attention, since she wasn't allowed near the CEO's office?

How childish.

Annoyed, Colton marched straight to the PR department only to be told that Ariel wasn't in today.

The day was already hectic. He frowned deeper and called Ariel. "Ms. Walker, I don't know what game you're playing, but get back to the office immediately."

Ariel's eyes darkened.

This must be about Jayson. Had he already seen the divorce papers and wanted to talk?

That was the only possibility she could think of.

Without hesitation, she turned the car around and headed straight for Bluum Corp.

When Colton saw Ariel rushing in, his suspicions were confirmed. She hadn't changed—still seeking special attention from Jayson. Colton could barely hide the mockery on his face.

"Where is he?" Ariel's face was pale.

She still needed to pick up her medication from the hospital. She was still considering her treatment. Once she started chemotherapy, it would be hard to hide from her grandmother, Katie Taylor, and uncle, Leonard Walker.

"This is Bluum Corp, Ms. Walker. You expect Mr. Larkin to come down personally just to see you?" Colton's tone was all business. "He has something for you to handle."

"Is it about the div—"

"There was some negative press surrounding Ms. Stanton's birthday celebration last night. People are questioning whether she stole someone else's man. Ms. Stanton isn't just anyone. She's about to become the face of Bluum Corp's key project. We can't afford any scandals tarnishing her image.

"Mr. Larkin requested that you handle it. Make sure Ms. Stanton's name is cleared and shut down the rumors."

Ariel couldn't quite understand what was happening. Her mind was already a mess since she was feeling worried. She had a confused, dubious look in her eyes the moment she saw Jayson."What are you doing here?"Jayson slowly directed his gaze to the bright red light above the operating room door."Why can't I be here?" Jayson replied nonchalantly. He sounded as if he did not really understand what Ariel was asking.Ariel furrowed her brows. Jayson's sudden appearance had interrupted her train of thought. "Mr. Larkin, you know what I mean."Ariel didn't want to waste time beating around the bush.Jayson fixed his gaze on Ariel's face. After staring at it for quite some time, he seemed to have noticed that her face looked a lot smaller. Ariel was so thin that her chin and jawline looked excessively defined.Jayson took another glance at her and said, "I'm here to keep you company."Ariel frowned. "How did you know my uncle's having the operation today?"Jayson responded unhurried

Ariel shook her head. "He already knows the answer, so he won't."Chad agreed. "You have a point. Well, he'd be a real scumbag if he tried to make an unreasonable demand of you for Nancy."Ariel couldn't care less about what the Veyo Solutions team would do in their current situation.Leonard would be having the operation the next day. She was not in the mood to think about other matters.…It took quite some time for them to schedule a date and time for Leonard's operation. They now had Liam sharing his professional opinion regarding Leonard's treatment. After confirming that Leonard's vitals were in the suitable range, they quickly decided on the time to perform the operation.Ariel had applied for a day off.Chad couldn't make it to the hospital with Ariel. He wanted to have Janice keep Ariel company at the hospital instead. However, Ariel turned down his suggestion since she didn't want to trouble them and have them wait around with her.Besides, things had been quite hect

Perry understood almost instantly the underlying meaning behind Ariel's words. The Houston Group had managed to secure the patent license without much difficulty. Yet, it was not because Faye Technologies had any interest in doing business with them. Instead, it was because Perry had helped Ariel before. Also, Ariel would not owe him any favors anymore since she had done this for him this time. While staring at her impassive face, Perry understood clearly that Ariel had been courteous and polite to him not because she saw him as a friend. After a while, he nodded. "I understand."Truthfully, Perry knew from the beginning that Ariel wouldn't see him as anything more than a business acquaintance. Moreover, he was Jayson's friend. His and Ariel's relationship just couldn't possibly develop into something more.Frankly, even if they did, Perry was not sure he would be able to handle the situation well.He and Jayson had known each other for more than ten years. Perry couldn't possi

Ariel didn't spare Zach another glance, and she didn't say anything about forgiving him just because he had already apologized to her.Zach felt a heavy feeling in his chest. As he stared at Ariel's side profile, Zach experienced for the first time ever the desperation of being the person who needed a favor from someone else.Gary breathed a sigh of relief. He felt grateful to Ariel. "I'm sorry you had to go through those things, Ariel. If this young man does anything rude to you again, I'll make sure to punish him for you."Also, allow me to apologize on his behalf once more. If you ever run into any issue or situation again, you can always let me know."Chad's brows lifted. After giving it some thought, he raised his glass and made a toast."You didn't have to say all that, Uncle Gary. It is Faye Tech's honor to be able to do business with you. We had to bring up those issues earlier since it involved Ari's reputation. We didn't mean to turn the mood sour. I hope you'll understa

Ariel said that in a calm manner. Even if Zach had strong backing and Gary was a top government official, Ariel didn't give in and try to butter them up.Since the day Zach had visited Faye Technologies' office, Ariel had known that Gary would eventually get involved in this. After all, their new flight control system had become essential in this industry.Ariel and Zach did not bear any deep grudges against each other. However, Zach clearly held some kind of irrational prejudice against her.Ariel was not going to cover things up for him, even if Zach had dragged Gary into this. Zach could not possibly hope that she would smooth things over for him if he just stayed silent.Ariel had a certain way of doing things. They could only move on to talk about other things once they had settled this issue first. She made her stance very clear.Gary was caught slightly off guard. He could roughly tell what kind of person Ariel was. She might appear gentle on the surface. However, she was

Colton had just entered the conference room with a cup of tea in his hand when he noticed Ariel coming his way. She simply ignored Colton and walked past him as she left the room without sparing him or Jayson another glance.Colton was left slightly bewildered. He glanced at Jayson and turned his eyes to the cup of tea he was holding. "Mr. Larkin, the tea…"Jayson remained seated on the couch. He rubbed his thumb against one of the joints of his index finger and said monotonously, "You can just pour it away."…Faye Technologies eventually selected several companies to which it would sell the patent license. They were charging these companies quite a high fee for the license. Additionally, the companies were required to pay the fees annually.Ariel received a call from Carlos the next day."I've taken a look at the new flight control system. Hmm, you've done a pretty decent job. However, you still need to work hard on improving yourself."You mustn't feel overly pleased or satis
