Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Tightrope
Ariel's chest tightened painfully, and her face turned even paler.

The air conditioning had kept the temperature constant all year round, but now, she felt as though she were standing in an ice cave.

Noticing her silence, Jayson finally shifted his gaze from her face after a few long seconds. "Nancy's mother's health is getting worse. Her only wish is to see Nancy taken care of. Nancy needs me by her side. Just stay in your place as Mrs. Larkin and don't cause trouble. I won't bother you."

The way he spoke about his affair was almost righteous.

He wouldn't bother her?

Ariel froze for a long moment, then suddenly laughed. Suppressing the ache in her chest, she said, "If she needs you, then you really shouldn't be here with me."

Without another word, she turned and climbed the stairs, slamming the door behind her without a second glance.

A few minutes later, the sound of a car engine roared from downstairs. Jayson was leaving—no doubt heading straight to Nancy.

Exhausted, Ariel dragged herself to the bathroom and splashed cold water on her face. The chill sharpened her senses.

She turned on her laptop and contacted Aaron Foster, a lawyer she had known three years ago. She asked him to help her draft a divorce agreement.

Aaron replied, "Ms. Walker, do you have any specific requests? For example, regarding the house, the car, or how to divide assets?"

Ariel paused, then calmly responded, "I don't want anything."

She didn't even want Jayson, so why would she want any of that stuff?

Besides, she had read online that if she didn't ask for anything, the process would be faster. She wouldn't have to drag her already weakening body through endless negotiations with him.

Aaron quickly sent her the completed agreement.

Ariel printed it out. She gripped a pen so tightly her knuckles turned white, but she didn't hesitate. Suppressing her trembling, she signed her name.

Then, she endured the pain and hurriedly packed her belongings.

As she stood at the door, she took one last, long look at the home she had cared for over the past three years.

Without another word, she walked away.

The next day, Ariel took a leave of absence from work and arranged for a same-day delivery service to drop off the printed divorce papers at Bluum Corp's front desk.

For something as small as a package, Jayson never bothered to do it himself, so she had filled in Colton as the recipient.

Since marrying Jayson, she had worked at Bluum Corp.

He refused to make their marriage public and forbade her from approaching him at the company, so she was relegated to the PR department. Her job was to manage the company's public image.

Over the years, Ariel had risen to the position of PR manager through sheer skill.

In all three years, she had never once taken a sick day or gone absent.

She was good at what she did not because she enjoyed it but because she had always aimed for perfection. It had nothing to do with her profession either.

Now that she had made up her mind to divorce, she had no intention of staying at Bluum Corp.

Once the courier had left, Ariel glanced at the clock. It was almost 10:00 am.

She clenched her fists. She had something more important to do.

Ariel arrived at Eastgate Prison in Eldoria.

Her palms were sweating as she gripped the steering wheel. It had been three years. The thought of facing Lucas Sanderson again made her nervous.

Today, he was finally being released.

She had made a reservation for a private room in a restaurant a month in advance to welcome him back.

Lucas was a child adopted by her father. They had grown up together. In the ruthless Sanderson family, Lucas had always been the one to treat her kindly.

For over a decade, he had protected her, never once speaking harshly to her. He had always vowed that while others might disappoint her, he never would.

She looked at herself in the mirror. Her face was pale from illness, so she dabbed on a bit of blush to look healthier. To keep him from worrying, she took a painkiller and added sunglasses and a hat to her outfit.

The gates ahead slowly opened.

Without thinking, she got out of the car. Her limbs moved almost of their own accord.

A tall man in black, holding an old backpack, walked out with confident strides. His short hair was neatly trimmed. His calm, piercing gaze swept over the crowd as if looking at her.

Ariel's heart nearly stopped at that moment.

Her throat went dry, and her eyes burned. Before she realized it, she was already walking toward him. "Lucas…"

Nancy looked confident, graceful, and poised.Zach couldn't help recalling the moment Ariel threw herself at Jayson."Who exactly is Ariel?" he asked.Frederick thought for a second. "She's with Faye Technologies now as Mr. Hockney's assistant. But if you ask me, their relationship doesn't seem strictly professional."Why would a man of Chad's status pay that much attention to a married woman like Ariel?Frederick couldn't think of any other reason other than a romantic one, which only made him see Ariel as completely shameless.Zach was genuinely surprised. He understood exactly what Frederick was implying.Chad had a spotless reputation in the industry, with no gossip or scandals. He didn't even entertain women at business dinners. He was practically a symbol of self-restraint.So Ariel had Chad wrapped around her finger and was also making moves on Jayson?"Why the sudden curiosity?" Frederick asked, raising a brow.Zach clicked his tongue and clinked glasses with him. "I

Ariel's words were stuck in her throat.Frowning, she looked up at him. "You're overthinking it, Mr. Larkin. I wasn't going to ask you for it."Jayson didn't answer right away. He simply stared thoughtfully at her face. From his angle, he noticed her slightly sharper chin. Her once delicate face now seemed even slimmer. It made her eyes appear even bigger.Suddenly, he reached out and pinched her chin, lifting her face to get a better look. His hand hovered near her waist."Did you lose weight?" Jayson asked.Ariel's waist had definitely gotten smaller. His tone was cool, but there was a hint of something else in his eyes. "Or has something been making you lose your appetite?"Ariel avoided his gaze. She was surprised that Jayson noticed the change. But that was probably where his concern ended. If he knew about her condition, he probably wouldn't care at all.She steadied herself and moved to push him away. "Can you let go now?"She didn't respond directly to his question.

Everyone just shook their heads.Even Frederick walked over and scoffed. "Of all the people you could've gone up against, you chose Ms. Stanton? With Mr. Larkin standing right there, you really thought she would walk away empty-handed?"In his eyes, anyone trying to compete with Nancy was just asking to be humiliated."If you're that upset about it, maybe bring your husband next time. Let him fight it out with Mr. Larkin," he added mockingly.Frederick had been genuinely surprised when he found out that Ariel was married.Back then, he'd actually liked her.Ariel had been stunning, calm, and self-possessed. He'd always thought of her as intelligent and refined. But then she suddenly got married. And even more shockingly, she chose to become a full-time housewife. Her world shrank to the kitchen, and her life revolved around a man. It felt like she'd thrown all her potential away. That was when Frederick's admiration soured into contempt. She was no different from all the other

Ariel's expression shifted. She stared at Nancy in surprise.Nancy, however, smiled back with a calm, elegant grace. Her composure and confidence were entirely genuine.Frowning, Frederick glanced over. "Ms. Walker, did you even check the signature? Anything displayed in Spencer Gallery is a masterpiece. There's no need for you to pretend to be from a scholarly background. You might end up embarrassing yourself."It wasn't hard to read between the lines. He was practically accusing Ariel of trying to claim credit for Nancy's mother's work.Nancy understood the implication immediately. Frederick was suggesting that Ariel was being vain. She agreed, though she didn't say it outright. Instead, she said gently, "This was the first painting my mom sold before going abroad. I never expected to see it here, but..."She turned to Ariel with a smile. "I appreciate your admiration. You've got good taste, Ms. Walker."Ariel was at a loss for words. She couldn't believe the coincidence. I

Janice continued, "And Zach is now in-laws with the Spencer family. That's a true power match."Ariel was a little surprised. No wonder the exhibition was so exclusive.Between the Spencers' elite status and the Quintons' connections, this wasn't the kind of place just anyone could walk into. No wonder even Jayson had shown up.After finishing the first floor, Ariel and Janice headed upstairs. Each section had its own distinct style, filled with striking pieces from all genres.Ariel had always had a genuine interest in the arts. With Elena working in the field, she'd grown up surrounded by it.She'd gone through both the first and second floors and still hadn't seen anything related to Elena, which left her disappointed."These pieces aren't for sale, are they?" Ariel asked.Janice, ever the know-it-all, shook her head. "Nope. Collecting is just Mr. Spencer's personal hobby. And since he's displaying calligraphy pieces specifically for his grandpa, this kind of event is reall

Ariel immediately noticed the look Nancy threw her way. It carried a hint of amusement—a look that felt especially cutting.Jayson's face remained cold and unreadable, showing no trace of familiarity toward her.As curious gazes swept in from all directions, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of Ariel's lips. "Ms. Stanton already has a man by her side. I'm just wondering. What role are you playing in this, Mr. Swanson?"The comment made Frederick's face twist awkwardly. He instinctively glanced at Nancy. He was annoyed. Was Ariel seriously taking shots at him now?"He's her lapdog, of course," Janice said. She wasn't going to show Frederick any respect. If he was targeting Ariel, then Janice would stand firmly with her.And it was obvious Frederick was the one stirring trouble here.Frederick's expression darkened. "That's out of line, Janice. I just admire Ms. Stanton, that's all."Even Nancy couldn't help but frown. She'd expected Ariel to be flustered or embarrassed, but

Ariel held Janice back. She calmly looked at Frederick. "We're here representing Mr. Hockney.""Since when has Mr. Hockney become so negligent, so much so that he'd send the likes of you to attend an event like this, which is vital for networking?" Frederick frowned, clearly puzzled. He knew Janice's character. She was only interested in the pleasures of life. As her friend, how could Ariel be any better than her?Ariel knew Frederick was prejudiced against her. She didn't explain herself. Instead, she tugged Janice along and went to another exhibition hall.In doing so, she passed by a man who was walking in their direction. When Zach Quinton laid eyes on her, he couldn't help but gaze at her for several seconds.Frederick followed his gaze and stepped forward. "Mr. Quinton, that's my younger sister. She has always been unruly. I must keep an eye on them so they won't do anything inappropriate.""Are they both your sisters?" Zach asked with an eyebrow raised.Frederick was jus

Noticing Betty's enthusiasm, Ariel thought that seemed peculiar. "He… had already left."She wasn't sure when Jayson left in the night. Judging by how neat the bed was, she was certain he didn't stay the night.Betty's expression changed. "He left? It's only 7:30 am. I woke up at 6:00 am, but I never saw him leave."Ariel realized that something was not right with Betty. She soothed her and asked, "Grandma, did something happen?"Seeing that she was curious, Betty sighed heavily. "The concoction I had him drink last night wasn't a supplement. It was… an aphrodisiac."The field of alternative medicine was extensive and profound. She purposely asked Albert to prepare the concoction, but evidently, it didn't help! Ariel didn't look like someone who'd had a passionate night.Ariel froze. Pressing her lips together, she fell silent. No wonder she thought Jayson's voice sounded raspy last night. As for when he left…"Grandma, tell the kitchen staff not to prepare breakfast for Jayson.

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 98

Jayson calmly withdrew his hand and glanced at Betty. "Happy now?"Betty was reassured, but she still told the household staff to bring Jayson a bowl of concoction. "Take this supplement. It's good for you."Seeing that she insisted, Jayson decided to go along with her. He didn't even ask what it was for as he downed the entire bowl.Betty smiled, pleased. She then turned toward Ariel, who was deep in thought. "Ari? Come here. Let Mr. Ward examine you."Jayson leisurely turned to look at her too.Ariel clenched her fists. She felt a lump in her throat. "I…"She couldn't let Albert examine her.A skilled alternative doctor could definitely identify any health conditions that one had. Albert had been looking after Betty for the past few years. He was one of the best alternative doctors in the country. He could certainly identify Ariel's condition."What's wrong, Ari?" Betty stepped closer to her.Ariel's lips were drained of color. "Grandma, I'm feeling fine. There's really no n
